Oh ho! Sony, who I had already pretty much counted out of the portable music game, has just stepped back up to the plate with the announcement (which makes for really boring baseball, really) that they will be supporting MP3 on their players, starting with flash players and going from there. That’s the good news. The bad news is that their plans aren’t official yet, so they could still drop the ball if they aren’t careful. Oh, and there’s nothing saying that the existing product line – on which millions of dollars worth of marketing and distribution have been slathered – will be able to be upgraded to support native MP3 playback.
Figure it out, Sony! And hurry!
