Apparently I’m not the only one tentative about the success of Sony’s upcoming portable game console, the PSP. Analysts in Tokyo are keeping their distance until Sony decides to reveal more of their game plan, specifically as it pertains to retail price (which will likely fall between $200 and $300). While Sony continues to swear it has a hit on its hands — especially Sony Computer Entertainment president (and father of the Playstation) Ken Kutaragi, who continues to claim the PSP is “the Walkman of the 21st century” — some analysts, like UFJ Tsubasa Securities’ Takashi Oka think that Nintendo’s dominance of the market will be a harder egg to crack than Sony expects. They did it once, seizing on Nintendo’s seemingly-trivial exclusion of a CD-ROM drive from the Nintendo 64, and Sony is betting that the addition of an optical drive will lead them to success again.
