Wow...where to begin. People seem to have short memories of where MS was taking the industry before the iPod showed up.

http://www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/Q4.06/3D3FC2DB-A7B7-44DE-...

People seem to forget MS's attempted to kill MP3s by replacing it with their proprietary DRM scheme. The first Music players that used MS PROPRIETARY DRM scheme did not support MP3. Big Mistake. Apple did & does.
Before Apple, all stores that use MS's proprietay DRM scheme only sold subscriptions...that didn't work so the next step was to offer dowloadable DRM'd music with variable pricing. Individual songs had different & confusing usage rights (typical MS). Apple offered all songs at $.99, the songs could be transfered to 4 different computers & Burned as many times as you liked (with a limit on the same playlist being burned 10 times). Yeah, Evil Apple. Pull your head out of your backside.

Remember Plays For Sure? MS 2nd attempt at a music download service? They left all you chumps in the dust with Zune. Your files that you purchased with the intent to play them on a myriad of devices...will not play on Zune. You'll need to purchase those songs again. Not only have they deserted their customers (in less than a few years) they also screwed all of their hardware partners. Three cheers for the savior of music & all things good...MS? What a bunch of chumps. Urge looks like a cheap iTunes rip off...what else is new.
Where are all the arguments about restrictions from the MS zealots?
Apple actually offers you this policy - all you need to do is email them and they will de-authorize your old account and you authorize a new one which they will let you re-download everything. They don't spell this out on the website otherwise, lazy people will just claim they can't find a track ... this is really for people who have HDD's die or have a computer stolen ... but of course, you can save everyone a lot of trouble by backing up.

Once again, MS is following Apple's lead.

metroxing

I dont know guys but Zune is getting me exited about MP3 players again... It's not even a secret that Apple lets you do this, its in their FAQ somewhere. Their FAQ says you can only do it once as opposed to Microsoft, and you have to involve tech support, but its a known feature of iTunes.

So really, all this means is a slight change in policy for MSFT vs AAPL. 5 instead of 1. Apple could trivially change the policy though.

obastard

dimebag: If you are like me and have a couple hundred iTunes then it would be pointless. You can't burn iTunes into mp3 format without getting a nasty gram saying 'Just 'cause you bought it doesn't mean you get complete rights to your mess. So why even try.' The only way around it, without finding a crack online, is to burn in cd audio format. That takes up a lot of time and media. I'd rather drag and drop from device to device then spending all that time circumventing the idiocy which is DRM.

ugadawg

"This may be a small detail"

It's not a small detail. PCs break, music players break. You could of course burn all downloaded music to CDs or DVDs, but redownloads is a much less arrogant approach than what Apple is using.

Hopefully this will put a dent in Apple's virtual monopoly (not that there's any monopoly per se).

ulkas

I think that's cool. Much better than Apple's policy. What I really want to know is if they are similar in the 'Authorized Machines' department. I would love to deauthorize machines more than once a year. Also I'd like to know if they limit the authorized machines to 5 like Apple. I would love to have more than the 5 because like most geeks I like to have options.

ugadawg
