FM?! You have a car. Listen to your crappy morning drive time DJ's there. the whole reason I own an iPod is to get away from that shit. As for replacing batteries, wus! I've been building my own iPods from broken ones on ebay, replacing batteries is super easy. by the way you have a child, I don't care if your mp3 player is made out of diamond, your kid will break it. Get used to it, stuff breaks. On many of your other points I agree, bluetooth and wifi would be great. I hate DRM but then I don't buy music from iTunes or any other DRM exporting asses. iTunes is not great and I wish there was a better Mac centric music system, unfortunately the WinAmp folks refuse to make me one. With luck more of you Windows fan boys will buy macbooks (I promise I won't tell) and some 3rd party vendor will make me some decent software.
With Love,
FM? Maybe Apple could offer the ability to play cassette tapes too. Oh wait, why doesn't the iPod play CDs? I mean, I have so many CDs, including some great Jazz ones...

Oh wait a minute. That's because the ipod is a DAP - Digital Audio Player.

Other players are out there with tuners built in. plenty of products for everyone. This one is designed with a purpose that doesn't include FM (rightfully so IMO).

Wireless for syncing (WiFi) would be ce of course. And iTunes not being Windows-like? That's a good thing.

hybrid8

why would you need FM when you have 15,000 songs in your iPod? the point of having an iPod is to be able to avoid the payola-infused crap those two-bit DJs play on FM.

as for voice recording, really, who uses that feature anyway?

wetboxersguy

You hate iPod because it doesn't receive RADIO? Hey newsflash, Copernicus - Clear Channel pretty much destroyed terrestrial radio. Thanks Congress and FTC! You old guys ROCK! (or don't)

Seriously, I think Clear Channel should get some credit for iPod's success. They managed to clear cut what was once a diverse forest of surprising delights, with thousands of indie radio stations perculating the best of what music is out there, into something you vaguely hear in the background when you're buying your Jamba Juice.

I could also mention MTV ("pretty" musicians don't make a difference to EARS) but they're so irrelevant...

Half the other stuff (bluetooth, WiFi...) contradicts one of your other peeves: battery life. iPods are about music, not driveby browsing of others' lists (besides my list kicks ass! :D). I'd rather have 2x battery life than networking. That's what my iMac (yup - one of those) is for.

Trai_Dep

apple does not want to offer FM in thier product, they can keep it slim without it and not have to worry about it. And for people that want it can have it for the low low price of 49.99. Another reason they dont want to bundle it. there is now way they could add that cost to the player and still maintain its sales, but as a seperate product they can get the 49 dollar profit.

xxenclavexx

Sorry, but shuffling a deck of memory cards is no better than swapping tapes in your tape deck to make a mix. How 80s. Large storage comes in handy for when you want to always have your collection with you so that you can mix according to your mood. Pick a genre and just let it shuffle. That was true when I had my Zen Xtra and still true with my nano. Too bad that 8GB unit isn't cheaper.

For the price of an iPod I can have several solid-state memory gadgets that play music using a AA or AAA battery that lasts a surprisingly long time and when the juice runs out I don't have to look for an outlet to charge. Sure, I can't have 10,000 songs in my pocket, but one 2-gigabyte flash gadget holds 600+ good old fashioned non-DRM MP3s that don't require extra software to play (iTunes or whatever shit Windows is going to load onto its iPod copy). There are very few situations where 2 gigabytes of music isn't enough, and you can always get a few other flash drives and still spend less than an iPod and the battery you have to replace every 18 months. iPod sucks, it has always sucked. It's popularity is not proof of its quality as much as it proves that consumers are sheep.

I just bought two tiny card readers with one-gig on-board memory at run on one AA battery. The memory cards are interchangeable. Each member card can be up to 4 gigabytes in size. The players were $35 apiece. Each memory card is $50 to $100 depending on size. No software, no moving parts, no DRM, no crappy built in lithium battery. There you go.

olegna

See with a radio there is something called an antenna, a longer antenna doesn't mean you are going to get a better signal it has nothing to do with reception strength it has to do with how high the frequency is. High frequencies like cell phones and wifi require short antennas while lower frequencies require longer antennas to pick up a signal. Therefore apple did the most clever approach in turning the headphones into the antenna instead of trying to make the ipod bigger trying to wrap a crappy antenna up inside the thing. Apple won't listen to the few asking for an FM receiver because the vast majority of people feel like I do: If I want an FM receiver(portable) then freaking buy one they are like 10 bucks, I spend way to much time downloading music to avoid the god forsaken radio. For those of us that live next to a missile range in the middle of nowhere radio isn't a selling feature I for one don't like the sound of static! lol

ObscuredCelery

I like you don't like DRM. No one does. I don't like driving the speed limit on the highway! But, i realized that until i owned the highway, I couldn't set the speedl.
If you don't like the drm, then why don't you negotiate a deal with the record companies that own the rights to the songs and get them to give you a better deal!! I and everyone else will follow you to your music portal!!

amen bdesign amen
this entire argument boils down to market research, and judging by apples 75% grasp of the market at the moment... I'd say they did their homework. Want a radio, buy it... the only portable radio i ever remember was in my sweet sony walkman (with bass boost), and that am/fm radio sucked... i never used it, just listened to my sweet collection of tapes. As far as the argument for things that make stealing easier such as line in recording, it will never happen... Jobs met with the music execs they laid out their terms, the fact that people hate him for the DRM and recording stuff just seems ridiculous, just remember like bdesign said, you are all techies... you aren't the average user. The average user buys what's simplest, cheapest, and sometimes what's most popular... simplest and most popular explain the iPod, cheapest explains the windoze platform's strong hold on the OS market.

djdare

See, the thing a lot of you don't understand is Apple does/did this thing called market research, and guess what, the majority of people either don't want or don't care about FM/AM radio in their iPod. That's why they made the add-on FM, so the few (minority) people that want it can have it while the other (majority) people don't have to pay extra for a feature they don't want/need. I know you all think that what YOU want is what everyone wants, but that's simply not the case. Same with WiFi and bluetooth. Hell, I'll bet the vast majority of iPod owners/buyers don't even know what bluetooth is and don't give a damn about WiFi. Most people are NOT tech savy in the least.

bdesign

How can ANYONE genuinely hate iTunes?

For a long time I have assumed bunches of nerds use iTunes like I do, but perhaps I am wrong. Over the years I have used WinAmp, Musicmatch, etc. iTunes has a far better mixture of features and ease of use than ANY of them, imo.

This is my set-up: Music library on external hard drive attached to an older sleeping iBook in the bedroom, running iTunes 24/7. I then use my other iBook as a glorified remote in the living room. I access the music using iTunes to stream content from my bedroom to the livingroom and then to an Airport Express attached to my entertainment system. I have access to 95GB of music from my couch and the ability to listen to it on a sweet sound system without buying an expensive Sonos system or the like and my iBook not being tethered to an ext. hard drive in the living room.

Can another pice of software do this as seamlessly and for free? I LOVE iTunes.

kevinmaples

I'll tell you what backwards is -- backwards is making your customers fork over roughly $40 extra for a feature that your competitors already include in their competitively priced DAP.

To the person who said that if the Taiwan knock-offs batteries work better, why not just buy one of those -- erm, the whole point of this post is to point out how the iPod can be fixed/improved. Rather than an FM reciever, I'd like to see a built-in FM transmitter. And not one that sux. We just got an XM Roadie XT player from Woot, and it's got that feature. So nice! Not the best sound qual in the world, but still...the fact that it's built-in and it works better than those belkin ones that I tried for the iPod, I can dig that.

ewilliams

FM? What was it you were just saying about going backwards?

Scratches: I've had mine for a year and do not have a single scratch. Remember that little sleeve it came in? Slipping the iPod in and out before and after each use is a religious thing. You can even use it to clean off your fingerprints.

Battery life: I have so many gadgets that will charge it for me that I don't even hook it up specifically to charge it anymore.

DRM: Buy the CD and rip yourself.

Yes, iTunes is weird, but even my 10 year old figured it out for her shuffle.

No bluetooth... I think I could live without this. I don't see any killer reason to have it right now.

No WiFi... I would loooove for this thing to read the Rendezvous stream I have running from my Linux box at home using mt-daapd. This is the same stream I read over an SSH pipe from the office. For more info on how its done...
http://www.shokk.com/blog/articles/2006/02/06/getting-ipod...

Finally starting to get some haterage on the Ipod in the mainstream world. Some are coming to their senses, but they have such a job on advertising media and such, other pmp's with better features dont get many props.

I disagree with Worf, one because he's on trial on deep space nine right now, but second because i don't think that those features such as AM/FM, bluetooth, wifi, etc, would necessarily need to cpmlicated to implement. If the Ipod already has video / music capabilities, it would be easy to implement, GUI-wise, just different sources for the media than the hard drive...

soldstatic

"Everyone keeps having iGazms over the interface - I think it sucks. It's certainly a driving hazard. No tactile feedback and the new touch screen will have even less.

I'm looking forward to Sony's new offering."

You kind of have a ponit there but at the same time, I don't think the ipod was envisioned to be the default player for music in people's cars at it's inception. Companies live and learn right? Well Apple was fortunate not to have to worry about that one as about 60% of car manufacturers (I don't have the exact number but it is more than half) are offering interfaces for the ipod to work with their vehicles from the factory. This number is not declining at the moment and will most likely grow. Good luck with your Sony.

I don't care about FM. I want AM radio. FM blows. At least with AM I can get local news and weather, sports, and all the usual stuff not on iPod or Satellite... Why FM radio these days? What happened to good 'ol AM/FM?

Anyhow, Jobs knows the demand is there for stuff like AM/FM, bluetooth, wifi, etc.. The question is how can it be implemented such that it works nicely rather than (on a lot of devices) thrown in as a line item for the marketing brochure. After all, if it takes a million steps, people won't use the feature.

Worf

I want FM so I can listen to the ballgame live.

I want WiFi so I can stream my entire collection to it if I want. Or stream any of the many, many Internet-based radio stations, most of which have larger selections that I.

And I want the UI fixed. You should be able to whiz around the pad until you get to what you want, then click right where your thumb is to select it. You shouldn't have to then hit the center button. The center button should be for backing out. The UI is wrong. Just plain wrong. So close, but still wrong.

Addons cost money; even if it's actual*(sales+mktg+profit+etc). Your ideal iPod would then be about $399.

Most of them should be left as addons of some type, so that the featureset is modular, even if the incremental cost is higher.

I don't need any of the above mentioned, and radio sucks donkeys, except for FMU & 1 or 2 college stations.

*** BUT -Wireless Sync does sound swanky, and a James Bond "Launch Exploding Battery" button in the gearshift knob would be nice. I'd prefer my $9 at batteryship.com doesn't destroy something 25x more expensive.

Will

How about AM AND FM?

Like Mr. Gentzen said, I'd use the FM for tuning into the TVs at my gym along with the times where I'd just want to listen to the radio instead. However, there are many times when I want to listen to talk radio or Cubs broadcasts so including both bands would be a great help and would, in my opinion, be the perfect addition to the iPOD (without the addition of some bulky accesory). I doubt there's much difference to adding both -- component-wise or cost-wise -- to the iPOD.
Subscription music. Love it. Really love it. What? You say I can't own it? So untrue. I pays my .79-.99 per track and purchase it. The rest of the shite? I explore for a nominal monthly fee. Love it. And within two years, iTunes will cave in and copy the pc world. Cuz that's where it's going.

Voice recording and FM would be nice. Almost every other top DAP has it- why not the "market leader?" Oh yeah, paying $50 additional for a bolt on aftermarket kludge is hardly an elegant solution.

Buy an iPod Remote for FM, buy a case, rip CDs or go to eMusic for mp3s, bluetooh can be added, wifi just kills batteries you are already complaing about, and stop complaining. It is still the best unit out their! The Zune will have wifi and will also have crappy battery life, it does not have bluetooth, as far as the screen on the Zune it is a bit larger but same resolution, so who cares. I am sure Apple will release another iPod with some features like this included.

digiprod

Again...for all you pointing out the benefits of WiFi - I'm still not sure.

You are talking about syncing to the iPod wirelessly, why would you want to SLOW things down? Think about it - WiFi - 802.11g runs 54Mb/s, 802.11n, 108MB/s (or so..) - neither of these even come close to competing with Firewire (400Mb/s or 800Mb/s) or USB 2 (480Mb/s) connections we have now. Therefore, trying to sync up 60GB of music at 1/4 the speed of a wired connection...you'll get so damn pissed off that you'll end up plugging it in anyway!

Good idea - but, only on paper.

The better idea is for wireless streaming, to say, an AirPort. Now, that is something I could get on board with!
FM radio and audio recording can be added with -/+ $40 accessories for those who absolutely want/need such features.

Batteries can be replaced, in under 20 minutes for most models.

DRM is not compulsory. P2P, ripped CDs, DRM-free MP3 online stores... DRM-free music solutions are plentiful.

iTunes originated on the Mac, ergo it won't EVER respect Windows conventions, until Windows follows Mac OS X GUI guidelines, which is getting nearer by the minute.

WiFi bandwidth is A LOT SLOWER than that of USB 2. WIMAX would be better, but suck battery life like a hummer sucks gas.

The iPod 5G screen is OK for short clips and TV shows. If you want 16:9 aspect ratio for watching movies on the go, then you're begging for bad eyesight. Movies belong to the living room and movie theatres.

The regularity of any given kids insistence on getting new and shiny gear is based on said kid's education. No, junior, you don't NEED another pair of Nike shoes, the ones you're wearing are in perfect condition.

Envy from others is proportional to your propensity to flash your expensive gadgets in public; white earbuds are a give-away; buy better earphones and hide your luxury items.

Granted: Bluetooth wold be cool.

flyermoney

Wow - what a bunch of moaning minnies!

Where were you 5 years ago when I was unwrapping my launch day 1st Gen iPod, and reveling in it's Mac loveliness - oh yea, still in the dark ages.

I took my iPod though JFK 2 days later, and had it taken away for further inspection by TSA - they'd never seen one and 'wanted to check it out'.... Just in case.

Back then - I had people come up to me on the plane, and ask to look at the iPod, see how it worked, listen to the quality - it was like alien technology.

Of course, now everyone and his PC owning granny have one - and all you can do is bitch and moan about the product that moved the music industry into the 21st C.

Damn you all for doubting the Mac deities!

DrD

I have an iRiver that takes AA batteries. My main reason for this was the line-in recording. 99% of the time I use it for listening to audio books. I love it: small, easy to use, easy on batteries. Don't have to constantly plug it into something to charge. I carry an extra battery and swap it out when it is needed.

When my wife wanted an audio player I mistakenly got her an ipod. She wanted it to listen to audio books too. She was constantly asking me to fix it so it would play the song(chapter) that she wanted. The ipog firmware will not rewind form one song into the end of the previous song. If you need to go back a little bit to relisten to the last few paragraphs of the last chapter you need to skip back all the way to the beginning of that song. Replacing the firmware with rockbox http://www.rockbox.org/ allows to use the ipod to listen to audio books.

#1 - Can not rewind from song through to previous song.
#2 - I hate the interface it sucks. The touch wheel is just gimmicky.
#3 - Does not use AA batteries.
#4 - No line in recording.

jimwatters

Really... I think the only valid critique I've heard about the iPod and it's iterations is that you're paying a premium for its iconic form.

I'm secure in my own life not to need such petty status-symbols for their own sake. Personally, I'd rather pay less for more features.

the_caveat

I can't understand why you have such hatred for the iPod? I admit that there were problems with software on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen iPods but the 5th gen seems to be stable. Of all the MP3 players that I have purchased and or trialed, the iPod is the best. I currently have one of every iPod except for the 80Gb iPod Video as I do not see the value in this. What did we get with this version other than a software enhancement? In spite of this, my 60Gb iPod Video and 4Gb Nano are my favorite and none can match the look, feel or usability. The FM radio feature is not something that I have used much with other MP3 players and don't miss it on the iPod. I will say that I was upset with the scratches on my 4G iPod, but learning that lesson, went to the mall and got the clear skin that protects my 5G quite well. Spend the money, buy an iPod and don't be a hater!

HA. Its amazing how much the i-word can influence people's train of thought. Bundled headphones suck...hello? Creative? I have even met people that did not even know that there are mp3 players that can work without some form of iTunes or another driver. Drag-and-drop. Apple needs to stop bitching about anti-piracy and just let it be. Allow people to drag-and-drop. Go widescreen. Go bluetooth. Who the hell needs Wifi on a god damn mp3 player? Do you really intend to web browse on a 3" screen? Blinding Kids Across America! FM is something of the past now: go XM/Sirius and HD Radio tuner. Give me a portable television, so that I can watch the game during class. Give me PVR. Allow me to remove my battery so that when it craps out (or starts to smoke) I can remove it promptly. Allow me to burn DVDs that I own and save it on my pmp so I can watch it there, and if I want to watch it on a big screen, give me component cables (or HDMI, you can broadcast 480p through that). There are a lot of things that PMPs (US PMPs) are still not doing and the only PMP out there remotely close to doing so are the Archos series. I hope Jobs is gonna come out with something decent this holiday season.

daftrok

Seriously, Blue-tooth? It's slow. Might as well use USB 1.1 I'll always give up wireless for faster speed especially in the case where the device (iPod)is right next to the source (Computer). I don't need an expensive addition I will never use. If price is important (which it is Bluetooth is nothing but a nice sounding feature that's just a price anchor.) Apple please don't give it bluetooth just make the thing cheaper. I'm poor and have less need for bluetooth than I need a dial-up modem on my desktop. (You never know when you might need to bring your desktop to the sticks.)

Otherwise nice article. In an odd way it actually brings one closer to the little thing thinking about it's faults and realising everyone else is doing the same or worse.

P.S. New firmware is worth it for higher resolution video and more battery life. Even if it cripples iPod Linux and you have to use the daft iTunes 7. (iTunes 7 is not all bad but has some things that make you go Wha?!)

quayzar

Although I have tried to hate the iPod as I too had problems with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen ipods, I can't! I am addicted to the iPod with its gorgeous look and feel but most of all, usability. Having experienced many MP3 players with FM radios it is not a feature that I ever used often. Preserving the case on all that have the plastic finish is hard and I opted to buy a clear skin at my local mall that protects it quite well. When Apple releases another iPod, I have NOT purchased the new 80Gb video as I have the 60Gb gen 5, I will probably purchase it. However, Apple needs to add more than just a couple of software enhancements to keep me going. All who have not experienced gapless playback for a mixed CD are missing the boat. Take a look at my blog, www.mondogadgets.com for more...

People get mugged for anything of value, so you're completely off base on that one, not to mention there's been NO actual proof a rise in muggings due to the iPod, only conjecture and fear-mongering (which you're now a party to, yay!) There is simply not an MP3 player on the market that can come close to offering the ease of use of an iPod. My father (71 years old) has gone through 5 MP3 players because he couldn't figure them out, I got him a nano and BOOM, easy as pie. He uses it for audio books and that's about it, but it took me 15 minutes to show him how to work it AND iTunes, and this guy needs my mother to check his email for him!

bdesign

There is always something wrong with everything and although it is good to point them out so that products improve I think this list is not always addressing the entity with true fault. It's like you wanted a Top 10 but were not sure of what to say.

1. The products "mission" is to take YOUR music with you. Not some radio station with 50% of the good, 50% crap, and another 25% in ads. Hmmm... does that add up? You as Gizmodo have a mission and your site succeeds because it focuses on something. If you really want it there are third parties that offer an add-on.

2. True. The iPod is prone to scratches. I have had many and I know that I need to care for them like I would my pair of glasses. However, with simple care the iPod does not become unusable like many people claim. You want shiny? It will scratch.

3. Battery life is getting better with every generation. Apple does not live in its own battery dimension. It uses the same batteries that the cheap products use. However, building a better product, especially if you focus on looks and portability requires trade-offs. Lately the trade-off is more balanced. I use my iPod Nano in my car (not my XM or FM) and I go days without recharging as it accompanies me in my twice daily 30 minute commute. With the Video the trade-off is the always on color screen while watching video. With time things will improve but it is not entirely in Apple's hands. Blame battery manufacturers as well who cannot seem to come up with anything better. Perhaps they are busy with their recalls.

4. DRM is not Apple's fault... it is imposed on Apple if it wants to offer an online store. This is 100% the fault of record labels. Apple's is more balanced than most and as it gains power it should improve. This will take years though. I mean what else do you want to do? You can burn CDs; you can have your library on up to 5 computers; 10 iPods. What do you want the ability to broadcast to the world? I DO agree that Apple should license Fairplay to hardware manufacturers in specific areas. I would like my XBOX to be able to play music from my iPod or my Mac via streaming. There are many other products that allow you to stream music all over the home (many of which Gizmodo has featured) that will not transmit iTunes music.

5. I have had my battles with iTunes but it is not rocket science. I was using Windows Media Player with its "I do not like menus anymore" interface. I was stuck and I am far from computer-dumb. THANK GOD Apple stays away from Windows conventions. iTunes sometimes does give me hiccups even on a Mac but I cannot really complain about the interface or its ease of use.

6. You complain about battery life and also want Bluetooth. Bluetooth eats through battery life like a shark in a goldfish tank. I also do not like the idea of transferring music and movies via slooooow Bluetooth. USB 2.0 is slow enough as it is. We had to give up Firewire because of PC-Firewire-illiteracy already.

7. I guess not too many people are as unhappy with the iPod as you.

8. That's good it means Apple is not standing still like many companies do. You want change. Make a list of change but don't want the company to change too often?

9. AGREE. Apple should have gone wide with this generation and made the whole iPod usable in panorama style.

10. Wi-Fi. Why complicate things more? Why? Do you think you grandparents will appreciate this or Bluetooth? I don't want windows mobile! I don't want the cluttered mess that most geeks like! It's a music player.
Just to remind him the Zune's screen is the same aspect ratio *and* the same resolution as the iPod's, but it is physically slightly larger. All that means is you're buying bigger (more obvious) pixels.
The iPod has flaws and hopefully Apple listens to their loyal customers and fixes some of these legitmate complaints. 16x9 and the required battery life to drive widescreen video chief among them. The Zune though is grabage and will only sell marginally becuase Redmond is willing to lose money. WiFi in name only is not a feature they can trump The iPod with.

jrubzer

I don't get the battery bashing for the newest models. I've had 1st gen, 3rd gen and 5th gen iPods and my 5G battery lasts so long I barely have to think about charging it. Plugging it in to my computer for an hour or so every few days is enough to keep it topped off, and I listen to it several hours a day. I also play video on it regularly. My 1st and 3rd gen iPods sucked the hard at battery life, I even had the 3G replaced under warranty when the battery suddenly stopped lasting more than 15 minutes at a charge.
I understand there's a lot to hate about the iPod, but some of these complaints are a little shallow, and maybe wouldn't be heaped upon less popular players.

kerry

There are three things that have to be in balance. It's hopeless to ask for all three today, before we get some super technology that is still 5 years away.
1) Features - Bluetooth, WiFi, big screen
2) Good battery life
3) Small size
The stuff that everyone wants, big screens, cameras, Bluetooth, Wifi, brighter screens, blinky lights - these all take up a lot of batteries. If you don't want something that weighs a couple of pounds, something has got to give.
Apple has gone for the extremely small form factor at the expense of features and battery life. Every other player with really good battery life is really klunky.

KermityFrog

1. If you want FM, buy a damned radio. The reason for having eighty damned gigabytes of music is so you don't have to listen to a radio.

2. Buy a damned case. (Although I keep my 1st Gen Nano in nothing but my pocket, and I don't have a problem with scratches.)

3. I suspect the "cheap knockoffs in Taiwan" don't operate with the same sophistication, or as well as an iPod. If they are in fact superior devices, why not just buy one?

4. If you don't like the iTunes Store DRM, don't shop there. You can still buy CDs. Having and iPod does not force you to use iTS.

5. Golly, an Apple-designed program that doesn't conform to Windows "conventions?" That's a shocker. I use OSX and have never had the slightest trouble working or navigating iTunes.

6. And you're unhappy with battery life NOW?

7. Buy. New. Headphones. As a general rule, bundled headphones blow.

8. This one is just laughable. Honestly, your suggestion for improving the iPod is to make it less desirable? Really? REALLY? "Please don't make them so appealing, so I won't have to buy them." Wow.

9. A legitimate qualm I suspect will be covered in the next refresh.

10. Again, battery life. Not to mention total worthlessness.

Honestly, this entire thing reads like a big joke. Half the statements are self-defeating. Gleh.

it.goes.there

iTunes is Janky? I've never heard anyone complain that its hard to use, especially for the people that are intended to use it.

The DRM thing's easy. Don't buy music from iTunes. That's more a function of the state of the music industry than a function of the iPod feature set.

There's not going to be any major service like that that isn't going to have DRM of some sort. Anything you get from somewhere that isn't DRM'd will work in the iPod.

"Steve Jobs himself talked about how iPods must often be replaced."

The context for this was you're going to have to buy a new one every six months or so if you want to stay on the cutting edge. It's a good thing that they add new features frequently, isn't it? I consider it a good thing if when I'm ready to replace my Nano (hopfully a couple years from now) that I get more value for the same price.

I agree on the FM point. I'd use it at the gym sometimes if I wanted to listen in on what's on the TV screens. FM radio sucks here (washington, DC, USA).

Pretty much agreed on the rest of the items though.

Happy Birthday.

While I would tend to agree with most of the complaint listed, I still don't see the reason to have WiFi on a portable device? Are you not happy with any of the 1500-3000 songs on that MP3 that you need to have WiFi on it to stream from some unknown source?

Or, is it just Zune's Social Network you want access to? You DO realize that's the most bizaar excuse for WiFi ever? Well - it is!

ksat
