I agree with Miro.

Compaq was not perceived as being of that high quality; I've owned Micron, Sony, Toshiba, and HP laptops.

The Micron, was sturdy, and held it's own..was still working great when I sold it. The Toshiba didn't last a full two years; the Sony Vaio was the PCG model, that was smaller than a textbook; it lasted a long time, and I sold it it in great working condition. My current laptop, an HP, is a year old...and doing really well. I also had a low end HP desktop, that after a memory upgrade, also did just fine.

Soooo, to HP naysayers..never had a problem with HP customer service (only had to use them once, because of my own f*ckup) and didn't have one problem with HP's quality. Just my two cents.

Destardi

How interesting to see HP following Dell in technology and market leadership. Because the PC gaming market continues to grow, Dell introduced its XPS products over a year ago to ensure our higher-end products met the needs of all types of gamers from the casual game player to the most dedicated and hardcore. That was followed by our purchase of Alienware. Now Voodoo, based on my reading, is going to try to convince HP to include gaming technologies in high-end PCs. At Dell, we already understand that...and Michael is an avid gamer....so good luck Rahul.

RichardatDELL

At Dell we are committed to leadership on this front, and wish HP well in catching up.We have been at this for some time and we know that Voodoo was also looking for some help on managing the supply chain.

Alienware, the market leader, joined us 6 months ago, and continues to be their own company in the marketplace. Sounds like Voodoo is pretty much HP now.

While the Sood's are trying to convince HP management to integrate gaming features and technology into high-end PCs, we dont need to "make the case" inside our business. Its why we launched our own XPS line a year ago. We are already doing what voodoo at hp hopes will be the case.

And we already understand we can go even further -- and will. At Dell, with Michael and others being avid gamers, our celebration of the first anniversary of the XPS products included a gaming competition. See our corporate blog at www.direct2dell.com for some video and information about gaming and the PC if you want additional background

And by the way, the PC is really only personal when the customer can customize their own product, directly with the manufacturer of the product. its personal because consumers buy exactly what they want and need and there is a single point of accountability -- the same company. Its not a product from the shelf of a store and supported by someone not even connected to the manufacturer.
actually, Miro, prior to the merger, I knew pleanty of people with Compaqs and HP, and the HPs were all trash. My roommate's HP was dog slow. I guess it depends upon your point of view, but I always saw the Compaqs as better.

In any event, HP has done nothing but destroy Compaq since buying it. HP gave Compaq nothing, and thats quite clear by the current product range. I'm not expecting great things from this acquisition - with or without Carly.

And, yeah, the current HP marketing campaign is needlessly creepy and far from 'personal'.

thrillhouse

He didn't get the Dell deal because he wasn't #1 in Gaming so who is next in line HP. He will never be #1. He got more money but money isn't the issue when you have a good amount already. Apparently bandit doesn't read jalopnik. The "Premier Automotive Group?" at Ford has been bleeding since the onset. Aston Martin is on the auction block with Jaguar set to follow.

Diversification as a business strategy has not been too successful in the Automotive industry...lets hope it pans out better for Dell and HP

rlibson

All of this makes perfect sense. The high-end gamer PC market has the highest margins in an increasingly commoditized business and the largest growth potential. Both Dell and HP have been suffering from low year on year growth in the PC market caused by the collapse of corporate tech spending and the saturation of the Home Market. They had to do something. If HP does what Dell did, then they will leave Voodoo alone and just add the profits to the bottom line.

Shervyn

Hope they keep it as an independent sub. No reason to believe they're trying to integrate it into their mainstream line of products. I see these acquisitions as a way for the traditional manufacturers to diversify their markets. If demand softens for mid-priced PCs, perhaps the "luxury" gaming market will soften the blow. Remember: Jaguar is owned by Ford.

bandit

So that's what the HP board of directors was discussing at that offsite meeting... No wonder they couldn't discuss things at the congressional hearings - they were waiting for the press release to come out.

Hmmm, agreed.

I love and own products from both companies, but this is undoubtedly a death knell for Voodoo.

There's just no room in SHOPPING.HP.COM's lineup for this exoticism. Pity, but true.

Sean Harrington

Hmmm. I love and own products from both companies, but this is certain to spell the end of Voodoo PC. Unless HP is ready to shag the button-down image so prevalent on shopping.hp.com (they're not, I'm certain), these products will have no place in their product line-up.

Sean Harrington
