Google Gets Their Patent on for Free Wi-Fi

GoogleWifi.jpgGoogle's next step to taking over the world is slowly becoming a reality as they have filed for three patents relating to wireless internet access. Coincidentally these patents deal with branding, advertising and subsidizing. The rumors of free Wi-Fi from Google began circulating late last year and now it seems this may become a reality. Look at some Google ads for free internet? Where do I sign up?

  • Will Customize Google with Firefox work? Free wireless and NO ads. Yum. http://www.customizegoogle.com/ Let's see. Microsoft lowers DIALUP to $17.95 (WTF) and Google plans of FREE WIRELESS BROADBAND...hmmm...who will win that fight?

  • Google are pretty good at announcing real things that sound far fetched on April fools day... (like 1Gb e-mail when everyone else was 20mb), so only a couple days to go to see if this is it! Gizmodo, I hope you didn't steal their thunder... or Google will sayz "Oh no you di'int ??!!" while waiving its well manicured finger.

  • i hope this happens...i like free!

  • Google will you marry me? I once heard a guy say "Emacs is my operating system, Linux is my device driver." I hope one day that Google will be my operating system and Firefox will be my device driver :) (Uber-geeks will should get it)

  • kspray: it's possible that Google will require you to use their version of Firefox. Apparently they were hiring for a coder with Mozilla skillz a while ago. It would make a lot of sense to require free users to ditch IE. Except that it would be evil.

  • I get it. But I don't know why you would prefer google and firefox over emacs and linux.

  • Anything that will help to put an end to IE is great by me.

  • nzruss.. Like Google Gulp? http://www.google.com/googlegulp/

  • i'm both over joyed and afraid. I've been saying this whole time that i knew that someway, somehow, that one day free internet would come back (like when the internet first came out and all those things like yahoo were free)...but at the same time i'm a little scared. Google has treated us very well, developing useful programs and giving them out for free. This free wirless program is great, and i hope the connection for everyone is real good and fast and that google keeps on developing good useful products. My only problem with all of this, well, goodness, is that its all just a little too good. I understand that they'll be adds and that i'm sure google is somehow making a profit off of me, which is good (if it wasnt i'd be a little freaked out, a buisnesses job is to make money not do good deeds) its just that at the same time, its all just a little too perfect, and google is becoming more and more powerful. What happens when they start up their own operating system ( is that sooo out of the realm of possibilities) and succeed with that too? i'm just worried that one day google will look around, realize that there in nothing in computer land that they dont control the majority of, and then pulls some crazy scheme that completely screws the average joe over.

  • I bet Apple is going to say they had the Trademark before Google did (boy was that off topic or what). I cant wait for GoogleFi to come to my city, screw Starbucks & T-Mobile.

  • I am going to lay my bets with google. Screw MS, except for xbox360. Windows sucks and google is better than mediocore. Go google! I spell not good sometimes.

  • So did they file for three patents or were they issued three patents? Very very different things. I can file a patent application for the wheel but that doesn't mean I'll get a patent on it. I wish I could blame Gizmodo, but even the Business 2.0 article gets it wrong. *sigh* -p-

  • PSXNDC... Too late...I patented the wheel yesterday! Its called an iWheel...now I'm gonna sue Apple. =:)

  • I'm not THAT techie....does the fact that http://wifi.google.com brings you to google.com instead of a 404 or Try Again page (Firefox) mean ANYTHING (like I get if I try nonsense.google.com)?
