First Feel: Linksys WUSB300N Wireless N Adapter

There was lots of food and booze to be had at Wednesday night's Pepcom event in midtown Manhattan, but our geek antenna naturally gravitated toward Linksys' WUSB300N, a Wireless-N (draft 802.11n) USB network adapter for your desktop/notebook. Naturally, the adapter is compatible with Wireless-G and -B equipment, but provides up to 4x the range and 12x the speed than 802.11g. Click on for some sexy 802.11n action.

  • By "sexy" do you mean "absolutely huge?"

It's designed primarily for desktop use. And it looks like that plastic stand is just a USB extender that can be removed if you want something less bulky. If you want to get one for a laptop, I think they've got a PCMCIA card.

I've used a Linksys USB 802.11b adapter for about 3-4 years now without problems, so while they don't have the highest marks for speed, the reliability is great and I've found thme to be good with range.

I'm not sure that I'm ready for another wireless standard (or to spend another $300 upgrading my home network) but 802.11n looks like the way to go when I do.

I like the N stuff. I really do.

But until I can swap out my notebook's internal WiFi card, I'm not getting on board with it.

Aside from that I like Linksys stuff.
(and hearing people try to pronounce it, same as Sirius)

The only recurring problem that I see with Linksys stuff is that they went to the lowest bidder for their AC adapters.
I replace at least one a month for customers.

  • Huge ? Not hardly. Look at it in comparison to the USB plug sitting next to it. Like weatherman said, don't use the stand and lay it on its side like it shows it on the box.

  • Wireless N's still not a standard right?

  • IEEE has not ratified the new 802.11n standard yet. They will vote on it shortly. Wonder if I have a say in the matter, since I'm an IEEE member... shrug. Probably one of the many subcommittees accepts it and then the general body votes... shrug.

  • Have they fixed the problem of the N standard stomping on all nearby signal? I've been told this new standard will produces serious interference with older wireless.

    Really?

    Count me in for two.

  • iameleveneight says: "Wireless N's still not a standard right?"

Correct, that's why you still see 'draft' stamped all over the labels and press releases. I've read that there's a real chance when the standard is rectified, all these 'draft' equipment will not be compatible with Wireless-N... except with all the other 'draft' stuff you had bought earlier.

    No, thanks. I'll wait.

  • I am with bungee, wait for the final product, until then stay away and let the rich Gizmodo satffers buy all the toys and rate them for us.
