Canadian University Says No to Wi-Fi

wi-fi-zone.gifLakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario has said no to the addition of Wi-Fi networks throughout the campus because of the potential health risks that are associated with electromagnetic fields produced by Wi-Fi signals. The refusal was issued by Lakehead University President, Fred Gilbert. He directly noted a study done by the California Public Utilities Commission that stated tumors and other diseases can be caused by electromagnetic fields. For the Lakehead students, sorry. On-campus Wi-Fi is potentially the greatest amenity for the modern student, and it looks like you will have to wait a little longer.

  • Now I remember why I scratched Canada off my list of "Places to flee to now UK is turning into police state". Making policy decisions on the basis of one study and ignoring the others? Bad politics is universal, it seems. :(

  • Lakehead University should start petitioning the government to stop television and radio broadcasts and they should write to God about putting out the sun because they are being bombarded with electromagnetic energy right now. Oh yeah, if you can pick up a radio signal, a TV signal, if your cell phone has bars on it, if you are in direct sunlight, artificial light, close to power lines, etc, etc. you too are getting bombarded. DEAL WITH IT. Does the University have a valid point? Well that's debatable. On one hand Antenna signal strength decreases exponentially as the distance from the source increases, but on the other hand extended exposure to the sun is not good for your skin. Looks like they are using this as an excuse to either 1) shirk technology costs or 2) prevent students from surfing during class.

  • Hello eh! This was a University making the decision NOT the Parliament of Canada....

  • Anyone know if this link/product is for real or just B.S. http://www.emf-health.com/video2/INVISIBLE_DANGERS_Broadba...

  • Or try the site http://www.emf-health.com/

  • Beauty. Are the confiscating cell phones, eh?

  • I hope the big ass dish on their website isnt on the grounds of the university! http://communications.lakeheadu.ca/

  • Just for the record Lakehead sucks! Thunder Bay is a million miles from Toronto and the admission standards are pretty low as in anyone with a high school education can get in. I go to the University of Western Ontario and we, like every other decent university, have wifi access in every building on campus. Anyway long story short this doesn't reflect tech knowledge of Canadians.

  • University politics, government politics, it all winds up the same way in the end.

  • Yeah! Even Toronto bums have wi-fi access!! I've seen it!

  • Shhhhhhhhhhhh! There are no bums in Toronto!
