Sony Mylo: Media Player With WiFi, Skype, Browser, and Messaging

Compared to most Sony gear we've seen over the past few years, the mylo is a breath of fresh air. The media player does MPEG-4, digital audio, and pictures. But it also has a WiFi connection and a QWERTY keyboard, for chatting on Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger (No AIM support, sorry.) Wait, wait, wait! It also works as a wireless Skype phone! And it has an Opera browser. And it can wirelessly stream music to other mylo owners in the area, ala iTunes. Without cellular connectivity, its not going to best a Hiptop, but we love the open standard support. Full Stats and a video review after the jump.

The mylo has 1GB of flash memory, backed by a Memory Stick Pro Duo slot. Its screen is a 320 by 240 pixel 2.4-inch LCD. It'll retail for $350 when it hits the shelves in September.

  • That's really great. How much were you guys paid to post this?

  • Cute, I guess, but not a iPod killer .. time to check Woot and head to bed.

  • Oh snap, its the PSP-2 finally.

  • RIP PSP
    Sony finally gets it...I hope!

  • I try to click the YouTube video and I get a message stating:

"This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure you accept the sender's friend request."

  • I can't believe I stayed up until midnight for that :(

Yeah, but do you need an adapter to read your PS2 and PSOne memory devices? Because, if you do, then this is the biggest blunder Sony has made since the post earlier today about the PS3.

Travis ball-busting aside, the device looks pretty good. Sony must have been expecting the iPhone to be released today and this was going to be their response. If the iPhone had been released, this device would have been a footnote on the day. But, as it is, this is the highlight.

    Scary.

  • is this what we were waiting for? what a waste.

  • RSS Reader? I am too lazy to carry my laptop into the bathroom.

  • Nervid, reload your browser a couple of time that should work.

  • Cool. It seems a little thick. What are the dimensions?

  • battery life?

  • Brian, any details on the battery life?

  • My main concerns are also thickness and battery life (especially while web browsing). Good RSS reader built-in?

  • a hard drive would be nice. memory sticks are just not big enough.

  • Soooo, it's a psp with a keyboard and no games?

Wait, it's just a psp with a keyboard.

  • Seems like a more consumer-friendly version of the Nokia 770. The inclusion of the Skype phone bests the Nokia, though, and will surely sway some potential buyer this way.

  • Dude I'm no sony fan (in fact, I got screwed over a crappy Wega 5 years ago) but this Mylo ROCKS!

Dude this got everything! too bad sony didnt make the PSP like this from the get go! OK so the screen isnt that big, but who cares? the DS screen is even crappier and its the top selling portable.

Theres several hotspots in my area, I'm buying one of these and trow my cellphone away as soon as possible...

  • Only 1 gig of memory for music, videos, pics, and whatever else you choose to put on there? More than 1/3 the price of my laptop with 1/3000 of the features. No thanks.

  • I would rather have the sony reader, something I would actually use, because where I live there are bascially no wifi hotspots at all. otherwise this think is kinda cool, sony makes one tiny baby step in the RIGHT direction for once

  • The Nokia 770 is a bit of a different beast, the screen is miles better at 800 x 480 but it's a lot physically larger. It also has a very small amount of memory standard and is much bigger. I enjoyed using mine for travel but I sold it once I got back home. It's too big for day to day carrying around use and too slow for general at-home browsing.

I will say it looks like handhelds are really starting to get on the right track. This thing begs for a cheaper price and Bluetooth for phone pairing.

  • I suppose if your looking for an all in one Media Cabinet Remote (And what respectable remote can't browse the web and display media.) / VOIP phone combo for $350, this is your pony.

    Yeah its totally my pony.

well as soon as they drop the price to $150 - $250

So like when it hits Ebay

  • Somebody asked about the battery life, got this from sony's web site:

    "Gotta Keep Up

To support all of this functionality, the mylo device uses a lithium-ion battery that offers up to 45 hours of music playback, around seven hours of chatting and web surfing and more than three hours of continuous Skype talk time. It comes with a microphone, stereo headphones, a USB cable and a neoprene case."

  • This strikes me as a kind of game-less PSP, which sorta makes a kind of sense, only it's ugly in a kind of "45 year old executives think it's cool, man!" way, and lacks the fracking mobile connection (not to mention camera) that would make it more than an IM phone and token media playback device.

  • Scratch that, it's not an IM phone, it's a IM wifi comm.

  • About the remark made not integrating cellular conectivity...I think sony is a little ahead of the game. All industry analysist point out that in the very near future, when wifi is really wide spread, all conventional cellular comunications will die, and Wifi phone systems will be the norm.

  • I really like that it has opera, is there another device that does the internet thing for less? like that nokia thing

  • Who cares....I have a laptop, a cell phone, and an iPod. Why would I want to pay $350 for a proprietary Sony piece of crap. I'd rather have the Verizon UI garbage LG Chocolate for $150 that I could actualy use everyday. Whoopty wi-fi...who needs it? Not I...not yet. I'm sure I'll end up eating my words later this year when I break down and buy this anyway. What can I say, I'm a gadget geek!

  • JTI2K2, i am just wondering how well sony pays ;-). Besides, i like the DS screen, and (besides Skype) this is a little to much like a clie to me.

    P.S. I hate sony!

  • Rebuke to nukes comment: That wont happen. Tell Developing countries to overhaul their entire "Industry Standard" GSM networks, and replace them with a new technolodgy. Just see what happens.

  • It's a great gadget, I'll most probably pick one up once the hype has died down and it's selling for $100 on eBay. ;)

I have something by nintendo which is able to do similar things. It's my DS Lite. And in a a few months I'll have opera on it too.
Until then I'll only be able to listen to mp3's, play videos, check my email and go on MSN with homebrew programs. Oh and if I'm bored I can insert a cart and play some games.

  • Ladies and gentlemen...

    BEHOLD!

The reason you will never get a keyboard for your PSP.

    Enjoy!

  • It seems to me like Sony's putting this out there to work out kinks for the next iteration of the PSP. Voip in particular is a very likely candidate for the PSP2.

I don't think it's a good idea, though. It looks to me like this is targeted at the youth market, who they should be trying to net with the PSP. I doubt many people will be buying both a PSP and a Mylo.

  • Hmmm... I like. But why no mobile? Slap a SonyEricsson badge on there and they'd have my money for sure.

That being said, I still haven't sold my PSP...

  • Thanks to Sony for designing it with no d-pad on the left. Very considerate.

So, it's a Sidekick interbred with the Zune and given a PSP makeover? Hold on, $350? Rumour has it the Zune is going to be $400, do Sony really think that a 1GB player is going to look like good value under those circumstances?

  • There is a specifications sheet [Word document format] on Sony's website that addresses details like battery life, thickness, and what-not.

  • I noticed that someone said that they hate sony. I find that more and more these days people are hating a particular company for poor reasons. Propriety can be a pain in all but on a marketing standpoint its a good idea. You buy a psp, a camera, a tv, a laptop from sony and they're all integrated seamlessly (for the most part). In fact I just got in a really big fight with someone because I told them that WWDC today was a big dissapointment. Then she started bashing me and every single person who isnt a certified apple employee because apparently we dont know how to use computers. WWDC is a good example for bashing because i feel that most of the content yesterday was about bashing windows for being a "copy cat." (I'm pretty impartial when it comes to things like this, I try and use everything and if i dont like it i dont use it) Bashing a company for their products because you dont like them is not okay. It's the same kind of mentality that makes people feel that they can be racist, sexist and god knows what else.

Anyway to get on to my main comment. My college has wi-fi all over campus, and I have it in my house, but its all protected (obviously). Will I be able to access the wi-fi on campus with this, maybe a vpn client available too? T-mobile also has hotspots in certain places so would that be available also?

And is it possible that sony will include AIM service down the line?

Just wondering because I would definately buy this if I could use it on campus and although no AIM or even msn is a drawback i would still probably get it.

So if you dont like a company for the way they do their business, dont bash the company and its products, especially if you havent tried them, just dont buy their products and dont give them your money. Thats the best way to deal with something like this, and if enough people agree with you and dont buy their products then they will change their marketing strategy and maybe they'll create better products that you'll enjoy.

  • ugh. this is ugly. all round and fat. just like it's potential users (no offense :P ) and ye, without GSM, i'm not willing to carry 2 battery consuming machines in each of my front pockets

  • Integrate a GSM phone and Sony has a definate winner.

  • "So if you dont like a company for the way they do their business, dont bash the company and its products, especially if you havent tried them, just dont buy their products and dont give them your money. No offense, but if people were forbidden from discussing their dislike of things, the world would be a spectacularly dull place.

  • I would imagine Sony will eventually add more wireless options. This is a god first step. If it had a cellular connection, this would rival the hiptop WITHOUG a doubt. That screen is unreal.

  • My MDA does all these things (and more), is a phone, and cost less.

    Snore....

  • Im waiting tosee what Apple Brings us this week or even this fall. Im all about Apple and Adore my iPod. If any of the rumors are true, I wont need another peice of hardware, just a new iPod.

  • Nobody remembers the last time Sony released a product with the 'Mylo' name? It was a godawful overpriced online service for the Clie, several years back. Hopefully this thing will suck less. It couldn't suck more.

  • It seems like a step in the right direction though... 'specially considering all the stupid stuff that Sony has been doing lately...

  • Image of weatherman weatherman at 08:52 AM on 08/08/06 *

It's a great device. A little pricey, but not too bad compared to other PDAs with WiFi. You can't really compare the price to that of a cell phone because phone prices are subsidized by carriers - you can't buy a "chocolate" or MDA for less than the price of a Mylo unless you get a two-year cell plan.

What's surprising to me about this device is that it doesn't have a 16:9 screen. It would make perfect sense if Sony is rolling out this new media download service that the screen would match the PSP resolution. It would also make sense if the buttons mirrored that of the PSP so that the Mylo could take advantage of the downloadable games and PS1 emulator. But I suppose if it did that, it would be the PSP2. Which wouldn't be a bad thing.

  • You know, as with the PSP, additional functionality is just an update away. This would be a GREAT little device if it sported a 3G environment. It really does not need GSM persay for voice. No cellphone does really, if there is an option of Skype, google talk, or AIMvoice and what have you. Internet connectivity is all you need to make a voice call these days - and its got some perks. It has a little bit of some good things people like to use on the go. There are plenty of free Wifi spots all over the place. ( http://www.wififreespot.com/ )

This could be a niche gadget for college kids, too - since most campus's offer free WiFi. Just needs txt messaging, since that is the killer app, and probably will always be (besides PTT).

Sony could really be onto something if it just thinks things through - add some notes feature, email, calender, alarm clock, HSPDA/UMTS and forget the GSM. This could be a genius move.

Most people in the market for something like this either MAKE calls, SEND text messages and browse the web for simple things.

This is what this does - if you keep asking where the games are, and where is the cellphone, you are just thinking backwards - Sony is famous for adding things as they go with the PSP, and this will probably follow suite. Patience is the key I think. Trust the facts, and history of the PSP ;)

You could carry this around your home, using SKYPE. What other Skype WiFi phone out there offers this size screen, with picture capabilities, a web browser and music: none. Until now, of course. This isnt supposed to be a "cellphone". Its a communication and information terminal - with entertainment perks, built in.

Personally, every Sony device I have owned, with the exception of their digital camera's (because of the night vision) I have sold. Cellphones, PSP, gaming - all of it. I just did not like them enough to keep them. But this Mylo seems a bit different. Its a step into the right direction. It WILL get thinner, more funttionable and make more sense, as you see what Sony actualy does with it.

    Patience.

  • I think that this is a warning sign that a Next Gen PSP with a key pad is on the way. Time to sell off my PSP junk. Woohoo!

  • Needs a hard drive. Memory sticks don't do it for me.

I can see how this is what people consider a PSPII minus the games.

  • Hey Guys,
Battery life, according to the spec sheet is: 3.5 hours for skype, 7 hours for browsing the web, and 45 hours of music playback. It has a lithium ion battery. And we didn't get paid to post this, jjbelsky. That would be dumb. Thanks for reading guys, keep the comments coming.

  • why is it that everytime a new product is announced by a company other
