Nokia E62 Details Revealed

Just last week we told you about how the FCC had finally approved Nokia's E61, a.k.a. The Blackberry/Treo Killer, for sale to the US market. If you've already put it on your list of must-buy gadgets, you might want to check out Nokia's E62 which is basically a tweaked version of the E61. If neither one's on your list yet, perhaps this partial list of specs will prod you:

  • runs on Symbian 9.1 and S60 3.0
  • both GPRS and EDGE for data
  • GSM bands 850/1900
  • Bluetooth 1.2
  • screen is 240x320, 256,000 colors, TFT
  • miniUSB instead of Nokia's usual PopPort
  • Push email (like the Blackberry)
  • USB Mass Storage Mode, so you can mount your phone as a hard drive
  • QuickOffice for viewing/editing Word/Excel/Powerpoint
  • Screen Export feature lets you run Powerpoint presentations off the E62 with compatible projectors
  • Positioning and Navigation apps that work with Bluetooth GPS devices

Lots of other nice features but sadly the E62 is missing the E61's support for 3G and WiFi. Anyone know why that is? Did Nokia cut an exclusive deal with a provider that made them take it out? 3G/WiFi-less aside, it's still a solid business phone with a great UI and should still do well when it launches.

  • I think the e62 even removes the push email. This is by no means a blackberry killer, seems like a clumsy attempt at one.

  • They are more than lilely making a stripped down version so they can offer it for $150 less, JUST as they did it with the N9300i vs the N9500.

  • There's a certain US carrier that objects to WiFi phones. That's why the E62 lacks WiFi. As for why no WCDMA/2100? Your guess is as good as mine. I must say, I'm thrilled with the mini-usb port instead of the awful, unwieldy pop-port.

  • Without WiFi it's junk.

  • I dont' believe this - they had a perfect tool that could for once allow us to move away from the monopoly of blackberry devices (whilst keeping their services) and combine the value of such services as Skype and others - and they've pulled ti from the market??!?!?!? who runs their marketing? maybe they've never heard of Europe either...

  • Killed the phone without the wifi or 3g capabilities. I heard that they were coming out with the E61 to the US so ive been waiting, now they took the best parts of the phone out. Cingular never stops astonishing me with the fact that they have the worst selections of phones next to alltel wireless. And wut happened with the CU500 that was supposed to be out months ago. Had cingular announced that they were going to mess up the E61 with the E62 i would have ordered my 61 months ago.

  • I have, had, a Nokia E62 for exactly 59 days. Good, until I drop it, less than 2 feet high.

No more phone, extremely delicate. It does not work at all.

Nokia and Cingular indicated that not warranty against drops. So, I am out of phone.

Has your cell phone ever fell in the ground? Most likely yes. I do expect cell phones to survive this "normal" accident.

My recommendation, do not buy Nokia E62. It will break if you drop it, and chances are high you will.

  • I live in Canada.

My phone provider will soon offer the E-62 and I was considering it. Currently I have one LG phone (from Fido with an unlimited air time package that is no longer available) and a Blackberry 7290 from Rogers (who own Fido but are a separate company). I would have liked to use the phone in my blackberry but the two companies can not get their acts together. Meanwhile Fido is offering the E-62 but to get it I will have to pay Rogers $200 to get out of my contract and Fido another $200 to buy the E-62 - all to get the service out of one device. I decided to leave things alone and go on with two devices.
