After two days of playing with the SIXAXIS, have we reversed our previous thoughts of how good it is? Yes, I think we have.
Previously, we thought the trigger buttons were too slippery and the controller too light. Now that we've gotten a lot more play-time with it, the SIXAXIS feels just like a DUALSHOCK. The R2 and L2 shoulder buttons are pretty squishy (that's good), and as long as you press it down in the middle of the pad, there's fairly little chance of slippage. The weight issue is negligible, and the lack of rumble was hardly missed. Since rumble was never a uniform thing throughout games, not having it doesn't really affect gameplay at all.
In the two games we tried, Genji and Resistance, the controls were tight and we didn't have any problems.

PS3 and Wii - gizmodos new apple/ipod source for news bloat.

Metal Gear without rumble?
Sounds kinda rough.
How much money did $ony pay you guys so you can change your minds so soon....?
As somebody who's unsure of which new console to get, it's annoying when fanboys try to justify their choice of purchase by exaggerating some facts and hiding others. Dominiward, that's great that you think the Wii rocks, but at least lets try to keep a balanced opinion here. Otherwise it becomes impossible to tell whether the majority of people who have actually PLAYED on these consoles likes one more than the other.
Yay for biasness!
I
I just realized its been about a week without the worda "iPod" or "Apple" or "accessories" appearing on most blogs, except for Joystiq's Vladmir Cole's roomate's statement on the Wii box; they're trying to be like Apple (bullshit.)
I think we shall never speak of an accessory again.
Too be honest, I was really surprised by all of the initial negative reactions that the Sixaxis got. I think that Sony is bringing on all of these negative attitudes because they dared to price their console so high, and there are going to be people who try to pick out the faults of the system because they're angry with the price point. And I think people are entitled to be angry, but come on- this is the Dual Shock we're talking about. Aside from a few minor cosmetic changes, it's the same controller that people have been giving acclaim to now for 6 years.
The motion control is another beast in itself, and I'm interested to see how easy it is to turn the feature on and off so that it doesn't mess me up when I'm playing. But I don't plan on finding out for a while because I don't have 1000 dollars to burn. Still, I think people are just being far too quick to pass judgement.
Only 4 stories on the front page aren't PS3 or Wii related.
I know you guys would come around. I think it just takes a little bit of getting used to. After that, you'll be set for 6~8 years of good console gaming.
I haven't touched the SIXAXIS yet, but I can already tell I'm not going to dig it as much as the 360 wireless controller. I find it hard to believe the 360 controller can get any better (with the exception of rare accidental middle-button hits). The weight, accuracy, control, and feel of the buttons is excellent. The SIXAXIS just looks like it feels like the PS2 controller... well, which isn't very next gen (and the PS2 controller beats the shit out of your left hand after a while).
I could be wrong once I actually get my big paws on it.
Yeah, from what I heard, the SIXAXIS is real sensitive, and you can like swing it around to simulate a sword or a baseball or... oh wait, no, that was the Wii. Never mind.
First thing I did when I got my PS2 years ago was kill the rumble. I don't get it. It just bugs my hands. Maybe I'm overly sensitive. I'd rather get my rumble from a big sub.
Someone else better make a SIXAXIS controller with rumble features, I love the rumble effect-it can let you know that certain things are happening in the game in an innovative way, say that you are getting shot, the rumble is a very good notifier of this. Meh, probably wont be getting the PS3 anyway though, too poor these days, I spend my money on my computer.
Looks like the same ol sony crap to me.
I dunno, I don't want to make judgments, but with all the super positive / very little negative reviews of the Zune and now PS3, it would be nice if there was reassurance in the form of a disclaimer: Gizmodo is *not* getting paid by Sony (MS, Apple, Nintendo, etc.) for these reviews.
I'm guessing when the battery explodes, they'll call that a feature? It's the new rumble!
ZING!
Seriously, though, MGS without rumble-simulated rotor-wash for the Hind? I can't figure out which direction I'm being shot from in FPSes without stereo rumble, frankly. It's a pity. If they do a PS->USB adaptor for the system (perhaps inevitable for Guitar Hero et al) then maybe we'll get our rumble back.
im with scott g... after i finish a few races with a rumble controller, i cant feel my hands anymore... ill take motion sensitivity over that any day...
I never doubted it because it's the same/ similar design overall..just new buttons and slight modifications..all good...in the good...(for sony)..so dont judge till you get a ps3/wii just cause you think it's dumb....go play them at a store and then judge off.
This is depressing for me. I hate the Dualshock and it looks like that thing just won't die.
I just spelled SIXAXIS backwards, and do you know what I got?
Six more axes!!!
So wait, nothing at all has changed... you admit that... but now it's awesome? Guys, I'm all for jumping the gun, but when you've removed features and blatantly made previous features worse, it doesn't take playing time to make it better. In this case, it seems to take a strong SONY lean-to or promise of another gift-set... Gimme a break
DUAL SHOCK GOD DAMN IT! Bloody Sony better come up with rumble enabled games with rumble enabled controllers, cos its the only thing keeping me away from purchasing the wii over the ps3
I could never justify buying a system within the first year it came out, except for the NES (cause there wasn't any other system out) and the Xbox (cause I happened to play a level or two of Halo at my nephews house). The controllers are the least of my worries.
If it's games that sell systems, then everyone should get an Xbox 360 because GEARS OF WAR is by far one of the funnest games ever, and easily the best looking game ever!
I'll think about getting a PS3 when Final Fantasy 13 comes out.
Calaverius says: "Metal Gear without rumble?
Sounds kinda rough."
Yes but now you could be tasked with having to balance something delicate, say a bomb, in game to avoid having it blow up by using the motion sensors - I'd say that would be more fun than having a character rumble your controller a few times (though that was pretty cool at the time).
I never really cared to much for the rumble anyway, it seemed pointless. Seriously, do I need to feel rumbling in my hands every single time I get hit in Madden. Anyway, I'm glad they didn't change the basic design, since it's my favorite controller out there (granted I haven't used the Wii's yet).
Didn't everyone go "OMG WTF NO RUMBLESHAKE??" when Sony announced no rumble? Now Giz says it doesn't really matter? I'm confused.
I never thought rumble added much to games, like some other comments I found it slightly useful at best, and annoying at worst. I wasn't going to use it as my reason to not get a PS3, I have enough reasons already.
Maybe the free PS3s and all their accessories are just nice. If Sony sent me one I probably wouldn't complain about much either.
When will Sony learn that 95% of the games on the console are 3D games and swap the D-pad position with the left analog stick position? It's like they've got a team of monkeys designing their controllers. The boomerang controller was ridiculous looking (no more than the excellent N64 controller, though), but at least it looked like you could use either the D-pad or the left analog stick with equal comfort. Switching back to the original DUALSHOCK design without putting the left analog stick in the default thumb position is fucking retarded.
Jesus Tapdancing Christ.....all I want is for the PS3 to suck.....peripherals included. The thousand bucks or so I have invested in my Xbox360 notwithstanding (add up how much you have spent on games, then compare that to your mortgage payment....feel silly yet?), this former PlayStation fanboy must not be given a reason to shell out more dosh on another damn video game system (the Wii doesn't count, because it costs less that my monthly house insurance payment[fucking hurricanes]......so I have justified one of those). I was titillated with the initial hatred of the sixaxis....."Ha! The 360 is better! I dont have to buy a PS3!", but now it seems the PS3 may actually rock, and the games arent $90, and it's sexy......BUT IT SCRATCHES EASY (just like the first gen ipod nano you bought.....jackass).
So I beg you, find me reasons the PS3 sucks, and do it quickly. I work from home and he 360 drains enough productivity from my day. A PS3 would be the death of me........
Well, I have been using the controller for over the last 2 weeks, and it feels great. I like how light it is... but the lack of wire makes it eaiser to throw when I miss that putt on Tiger Woods. All the games I have played that utlize the motion controls, you can change on the fly... so if you are playing a racing game and you keep crashing because you tilt it to much, just go to options and turn it off. All in all, I like the system is pretty sweet, and is the only next gen system I am buying... mainly cuz I am not a huge XBox fan due to lack of good games.
I bought a PS3 to play games on my big screen TV with 1080p resolution. Sony advertises 1080p on there PS3 so why do the games only put out in 720p?
I love off-road racing so I bought "Motor Storm" and the graphics are very good but could be better. I can't believe how much I miss the shock in my hands when I hit a bump. Why doesn't it enable a two player option? Why doesn't it show best times? Why isn't there a mini-map showing where I am compared to the finish line and other drivers? Why didn't I check these things out before I bought? I knew I could play all my PS2 games so I thought I would save some money. I should have checked out the x-box. Thanks to Wal-Mart's return policy, I still can!
