By using a resource hacker and looking inside the Zune software files on a PC, some curious Zune owners found a few possible upcoming upgrades to Microsoft's player. Among them, synchronized lyrics, podcast subscription, aspect ratio, plugins, syncing lyrics to the Zune, and mini-mode playback options.
Of course, not all of these may be implemented any time soon, or implemented at all. It's just an idea of what could come down the line from Microsoft.

how hard is it to have podcasts really? itunes has had it for a year (i think) and its still seemingly in the vanguard. the only reason i have itunes at work is because it was the only podcast-catcher/music player avaliable in 05. this doesnt make sense to me.
you didn't list synchronized lyrics twice with slightly different wording.
syncing lyrics was not listed multiple times with a slight change in wording each time.
to be honest, i've only played with the zune once, but the only thing i enjoy about its software is the UI itself, i couldnt care less about video playback, nor could the rich spoiled brats who get video iPods and orange Zunes just to show off.
podcasting's awesome though, i'm going away for 2 weeks and my RSS reader doesnt work so i'm going to miss 2 weeks of gizmodo news, but if there was a gizmodo podcast that automatically downloaded onto my computer/zune if i ever decide to get one/wii if i can ever find one/xbox(not xbox 360, broke people don't have xbox 360) if it can even support RSS or podcasting, then i wouldnt miss a beat.
so please, for the next 2 weeks, don't report on anything interesting, and if you do, send me a podcast record of it or upgrade your search to show all articles before whatever date.
Is there something special about the screenshot of the synchronize lyrics option that has been available on windows media player for several years?
Synchronized Lyrics has been a part of Windows Media Player since WMPXP, I think, and to the best of my knowledge it has never left "good enough for review" status. You can enter lyrics, and add them to a waveform timeline using the fiddliest interface ever created, but it will never actually display synchronised lyrics. So convincing enough to get a tick in a features comparison in a review, but essentially a placeholder.
Those who were around when Word for Windows displaced Wordperfect as everyone's favourite x86 word processor will recall that this is not a new strategy for Microsoft.
Yes, that feature is from Windows Media Player and isn't a "mysterious future Zune feature." As you know, Zune is based on WMP 11.
This is how you use it in WMP: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecen...
Painful, but it does work.
Good updates, but still no unicode. I'm still disappointed.
Yeah, I can't see someone actually using synchronized lyrics - its a LOT of work enter them!
Nevermind the RIAA shutting down lyric websites everywhere (making them more difficult to find, period), then you have to sync them. Which will take a while.
Yeah, I'm gonna spend 6 hours syncing the lyrics to my favorite album.
Lyrics; yes they have been around for ages but lately when MS is getting behind something they are going the whole way. As far as the RIAA shutting down synced lyrics... I doubt it because MS probably is working on or already has a deal with the labels to allow this. It is not hard to believe since MS already has most of the songs themselves up for grabs for a mear $15/month fee. I think that the compitition they will bring is going to be good for everyone!
