The Samsung portable XM player and recorder that debuted at CES landed in the laps of the guys at Personal Tech Pipeline for a hands on review. The distinguishing feature of this media player is its "TiVo for radio" functionality. You can record up to 50 hours of XM programming, including individual songs off any program. You can start recording a song in the middle, and the Helix will capture the entire track due to its 10 minute buffer.
The 1 gigabyte of memory also allows you to store and play back MP3 and WMA files. Another feature similar to TiVo is the ability to be alerted when certain artists are playing on any channel on XM. Problem is, the Helix doesn't record the song if you don't specifically tell it to. This means this artist watch feature only works when you're actively listening.
Stick around for more reviews of the unit as the release date nears.

I thought they were supposed to have launched this yesterday? Anyone have any idea when it's going to make it to retailers?
the way i see the "braod strengths" of the 2 major satelight radio providers (xm and sirius) is that xm has portability (or will very soon), and sirius has howard stern. could this face off be similar to windows vs osx? both are operating systems, but have different strengths and weaknesses, and putting their money into what they believe the consumer will want. xm sees portability as the important thing, so they worked with samsung in order to create a portable xm player (something that i believe will help them a lot in the long run...people like their music portable, why else are mp3 players so popular?) sirius meanwhile focuses on the quality of their audio entertainment and has paid many celeberties, including howard stern, loads of cash to work on their network. however, nothing has yet been written in concerete. sirius could still get into the portable satelight radio department and beat xm, unless xm's head start gives it the push it needs to win. and the big names, such as howard stern, though working for sirus through contract for the next i believe 4 years, could then go on to work for xm, so we dont know! and maybe one of the companies, or maybe even another company, will come out with some feature that will totally blast the competition away. i guess we'll see what happens in coming years...
Hey, Dave! I saw it in Sky Mall the other day, does that count?
