After years of dealing either with those horrid mini tape recorders or small capacity digital audio recorders, it's nice to know about the MicroTrack 24/96 Professional 2-channel Mobile Digital Recorder. Looks like a regular MP3 player, but this heavy duty dealie records WAV and MP3 files, is battery-operated and uses CompactFlash or MicroDrives for storage. Ok, I'll admit, not the prettiest gal around, but can't say she's not sturdy. Sort of a frankenstein monster of a DAT and a digital recorder. All for $500.

This was a big hit at the AES show, where we got to try these in person. Only one major problem, which is that there's not real phantom power for condenser mics, so it won't work in every performance rig. (It supplies 30v instead of 48v). Anyway, as a light recording tool, definitely a winner. Not quite a DAT replacement, though.
Okaaaaay. The Archos costs less, records wav or MP3, has a LiON battery, has a huge hard drive, records analog, internal mic, or digital input, and you can use it to watch DivX. So why exactly would I buy something like this?
