iPod From Orbit

ipod_from_space.jpgThe story goes like this: when Apple CEO Steve Jobs won an abandoned mineral mine in western Australia in a poker game from late Australian publishing and gaming tycoon Kerry Packer, he reportedly asked that the first advertisement capable of being seen from space be created there. Two years later, and what do you know, it looks like an iPod. It's huge—the iPod image covers 220.7 acres. See it yourself on Google local.

Apparently when you have billions to burn, even the most absurd projects are within the realm of possibility. But then Apple's 30th birthday is coming up next month, so maybe they'll just write it off on the ad budget.

  • Now see!! THATS a humanitarian. Take note, Bill Gates. That'll show you to slam the $100 laptop project. BAM! Outta nowhere comes Steve-o with his billion dollar iPod. Now we can teach the world to love, starting with the Aussies

  • This may be an Urban Legend being born; the image being nothing more than a case of Apophenia (seeing patterns / connections where none exist). It will be interesting to see if story proves authentic or not.

  • And just why would Steve-o build this as an ad for the new gen iPod where it probably doesn't even look like the new iPod? Shenanigans.

  • According to the article, the big unveiling is supposed to be on Saturday April 1st... April Fools Day. Coincidence? I think not. I cry from the hilltops, "B***SH**"

  • oh Please. Call me a skeptic.

  • looks like a 3rd gen one though.... so it's obsolete already.

  • Most likely just coincidence - considering that most of the Google maps satellite data is many years old, the map image probably predates the iPod.
