Archos 504 PMP Details Officially Revealed: 160GB Hard Drive For The Win

We've been talking up the Archos 504 portable media player since the summertime, but now it looks like Archos is finally ready to start shipping the thing. What's also nice is that some hard facts have been released by Archos, the most interesting of which is that it has the most storage space of any portable media player. Available in 80GB and 160GB sizes, the 504 has enough space to store 450 movies if you so desire. It'll play most of the digital media formats out there, save for iTunes downloaded music, but you probably guessed that already.

The 504 doesn't come cheaply, however, with the 160GB model coming in at nearly $890. Plus, expect to spend another $130 if you want the fancy dock that lets you record from external sources. Look for it soon.

  • I've liked the 504 ever since I started reading about it earlier this year, and the $360 price on the 80Gb is pretty reasonable, bang-for-buck-wise. The DVR Station will make it MUCH easier to grab and go shows that I RARELY have time to sit down at home and watch. And the combo is something I could recommend to my Luddite father-in-law rather than the tedious schedule/record/burn cycle he goes through when getting videos for his lecture class.

  • Dag, yo. Dag.

  • Fairly sweet, but hold out for the 604 WiFi version (~$400). Uses Opera 8.5 for browsing and is physically slimmer, but with a 30Gb drive.

  • If it came with GPS, PDA, Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM, GPRS, EVDO a 3 megapixel camera, ATSC tuner and could also save my soul, then it would probably be worth the money.

  • Wud-up with this delayed posting, yo!

  • Looks cool. But still want to see what Apple and Microsoft truly have up their sleve before taking the Video jump.

  • Hopefully archos & echostar follow through with a new "pocketdish" the ability to dump dvr to the pocketdish at 5 minutes per hour of video is great.

  • so does this mean that Apple could potentially be plopping a 160gig HD in an ipod the same size as current gen5/5.5 pods?

Because that would be sweet (note: it does not have to be ipod, here's lookin at you Zune)

  • Can we please stop using the phrase "for the win" from this point on? It's more than slightly retarded.

  • scingram, why would you wait for Apple and Microsoft? I guarantee that they will have half the feature-set that the Archos gives and ask you to pony up more for that "benefit". Beyond looks (I'll admit that Archos gear is pretty ugly), there is no reason to buy an ipod over one of these.
I've had a 40Gb AV400 for nearly two years, enjoying mobile video whilst Apple fan-boys were whooping over 2" photos and recording live TV and DVD whilst they pay for shows at low quality that they already saw for free. What the hell's the obsession with these crippled, DRM infested things? I wish I had shares in Apple...

  • for that price, I'll stick with my Vosonic VP-8360. 3.6" LCD screen, radio, mp3 player, external HDD, photo storage unit that also plays Divx, Xvid, MP4, etc.

  • Hrm. I saw something similar in Best Buy last week, at least it was from Archos and looked exactly like that.

The UI is AWFUL. If there's any constant in Archos, it seems the UI has gotten worse and worse. (I have an AV420, and the UI, while not perfect, was usable - you had the 4 cursors plus back/forth, and three soft keys).

This one, I was sitting in the store hitting the wrong buttons all the time - took me a good few minutes to realize the buttons had a "left" and a "right" side to them (not completely obvious), with different functions... Yes, that OK and Cancel button has a function on the other side that probably will mess you up...

Looks good, and has a lot of features though. But using it, ugh. Those two-sided buttons are nasty and easily confused.

  • @ 1stage

Just remember the DVR Station is a $100 extra cost (doesn't come standard with the 504). Also, not sure where you saw the 80GB for $360. The MSRP on Archos online store is $400. Either way, the DVF function will cost you extra.

  • The 604 Wifi looks pretty cool, tho a 604 wifi with more than 30gb of storage would be cooler. More storage, or a cut down pc in my hand? hmmmm.
