Contrary to earlier jumps to conclusions, the Wii Sensor bar doesn't really have a problem with the sunlight directly shining onto it. Sure, one of their earlier engineering feats was getting it to work in sunlight, not to mention UV light, IR, and florescent lights. But Nintendo now says:
Our testing thus far shows no great risk of light interference when playing a game that relies on the pointer and sensor bar.
No problem here. Good job Japanese engineers! May you go out and get some sun once the Wii launch is complete.

"Our testing thus far shows no great risk of light interference when playing a game that relies on the pointer and sensor bar."
That seems like an odd caveat, as if some games that don't use the pointer/sensor will have problems with light interference.
Am I reading too much into the statement? Almost certainly. I just hope I'm not the only one who thinks it reads oddly.
Yeah, I kinda thought that whole sensor bar in the sun thing was misreported.
I'm just not interested in having one stuck on the front of my television, that's all.
Wii: You don't have to play with it in the dark anymore!
Hmm, visit the link? That's a pretty weak and dodgey response to credit N with a whole point!
I always play with my wii in the dark, even if they say it works in sunlight.
Hooray for freedom of speech on gawker sites, I will now continue to diss the fact that a sensor bar is even needed(and yes, speaking of gawker freedom of speech, I did use innuendo in the last paragraph).
THE FUCKING CONTROLLER SHOULD HAVE MOTION SENSING BUILT IN! First h4x0r that gets SIXAXIS to emulate a wiimote and sensor bar, I'll buy all my wii-fanboy buddies a SIXAXIS and your SIXAXIS to wii solution. I don't want a frickin sensor bar sitting on top of my 63" rear projection sony ninja TV. Using PS3 controllers and an HTPC emulating the wii just plain looks better.
its the positional sensing thats not built in, not the motion sensing. You can build the gyros into the controller for motion sensing (which it is) but to get its position in a 3D space you NEED some sort of outside device.
Learn a little bit of science before you post your rubbish rimplestultskin.
rimplestultskin = *yawn* nothing to see here.
The sensor bar isn't a big deal to me. It will tuck nicely under the center channel speaker directly above my television. I think it will barely be noticeable.
Though I understand everyone's home setup differs. Still, I think folks are making an awfully big deal over this. I mean, if it's as cool and fun to play wiimote games as it looks, isn't it worth it?
rimplestultskin: did you just cite the first amendment twice, in a one-paragraph comment on a gadget blog regarding a videogame console peripheral? Jesus wept.
I don't have a problem with the "sensor" bar either. It's about a zillion times more discreet than my surround sound rig, and I got used to that easily enough.
make up sex with a flaming ball of fire. kinky.
also why do people think their freedom of speech applies in a private setting? would you walk into a kkk meeting, yell "KEEELL WHITEY!" and not expect to be "censored?"
maybe you would. kinky.
Paradise: that's not censorship, that's the rope applying it's freedom of expression to your neck, while a bunch of rednecks apply their freedom of expression to your... well, moving on.
