Netgear 200Mbps Powerline HD Networking

netgear_powerline.jpgNetgear will release a powerline networking device that it says will be capable of 200Mb-per-second throughput through a home s existing wiring, eliminating the need for stringing network cables all over the place. It uses a chipset developed by Design of Systems on Silicon (DS2), which Netgear says is dependable and fast enough to enable streaming of high-definition video. Pricing wasn t announced yet, but the company says this technology will be available in the second quarter of this year. Whether it can actually deliver on these high-minded promises of reliable and fast connections through power lines as still debatable, but if powerline networking's past track record is any indication, we'll have a bit of a fizzle.

  • This is not a new deal, is it? Corinex from the Great White North has been shipping a similar product for several months now. Powerline works great. One thing it's great for is allowing flexibility in placing a wireless access point for optimum coverage. Anywhere there's an outlet, there's a network.
