A few weeks ago, we heard whispers of new meeces by Logitech— meeces that claimed to reinvent the scrollwheel. We got our hands on one early, and we present you with the first unboxing, impressions, and details of the Logitech MX Revolution.
But before we get to that, the wheel. The MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel clicks. Unless you don't want it to. Instead of a regular mechanical ratchet, the MicroGear employs an electronically controlled ratchet that can engage and disengage on the fly. When engaged, the wheel feels like any other clickwheel. When disengaged, the mouse goes into freespin mode, where the 14-gram metal wheel can rotate for up to seven seconds straight, the equivalent to hundreds of pages of text. The wheel can be set to switch modes between apps, or it can be set to click for a few rotations before kicking into a freespin when you flick it. the wheel is wrapped in rubber, like a tires hugging chromed out dubs. That part is cool, although the mouse does have a few flaws. Photos of the luscious mouse, and more impressions, after the jump.
There's a button below the wheel that can be used to run google queries on any text you highlight. Which seems like a waste. And there are thumb toggles, and a fake wheel that nudges forward and back, but does not turn. Misleading, but I guess it would have been impossible to fit another super wheel in there, and anyhow, to what purpose. The mouse is covered in black glossy plastic, grey matte plastic on top, with rubberized sides. Oh, it has a left and right click button.

this is a 6.7?
Oh, my..god, two wheels!!
Obligatory: "I stayed up until midnight for this?"
Actually it looks pretty sweet. I need a new mouse.
Ha ha I am glad I live on the left coast cuz I would have been pissed if I up until midnight
That sucker is so big, it looks like a motorcycle.
The stand looks cool, though.
Obligatory: "I stayed up until midnight for this?"
where did you guys learn to take pics? jittery caffeine photo school?
.........and this connects to the Wii right Brian.....right.
lame
It looks okay, I suppose. I don't suppose it's meant to move too fast, being as big as it is.
what's the mpg on it?
You need a better camera.
i actually think that this is pretty cool, not that im gonna go out and get it but it's still a cool idea. i guess i'd like to c a review soon but ya, its alright. o, get a small tripod, gorilla pods are cool (thinkgeek) because these pics are pretty bad.
U hurd about it a few weeks ago? I got this a few weeks ago because my MacBook's click butten broke. I like it though. Even though its big.. it fits very nicely in your hand
any word on MSRP for that baby.
I know since this is so revolutionary that all the vendors will be jacking the price up, but it's still good to know what it will cost in a couple of months when the crowds in line at best buy die down and the preorders are all fulfilled.
that stand is the same as the mx 5000.
but the whole thing is a bit meh sexy.
maybe a 6.
msrp... gdp of a small african nation
The click/no-click wheel is kind of neat, but personally I refuse to own a mouse that has more than three buttons. I am not hatin' on the billions o' button mice, I just don't think it "feels" right.
I am however hatin' on wireless mice.
Could someone please make me a decent mouse with three buttons, a clicking scroll wheel, a USB connection and laser tracking?
Preferably in the old school logitech "ambi-dextrous" shape.
this thing looks quite a bit larger than my mx1000.
but I could be wrong. Looks nice yes, but I have yet to have a wireless mouse I like everything about, and I doubt this is going to be it.
meh...
I guess I found my next mouse. I've got an MX700 that I love, but it's getting time to replace it, and the MX1000 not only feels a little odd to me, but I knew there had to be a replacement for it too soon to be worth spending the money on it. This looks pretty sweet.
I think I'll stay with my MX1000 for now thanks.
A mouse is a mouse. This is no revolution but couple gimmicks in a fancy ID is all. Look at what happened to Apple with their "Mighty Mouse". It crashed and burned! Cuz a mouse is a mouse at the end. MicroGear(TM) my ass Logitech! No way I am spending dough on this now; + It's saving for console time baby ;) so it's bad timing too... Can't believe we waited for this Brian; u bad lah!
Is this the big announcement? Meh.
It looks like a nice mouse, I just read there's a VX Revolution Notebook mouse that's similar and was also released today.
Have you guess been able to determine the battery life yet?
I have a G7 and so far that's what irritates me the most about it.
well, another goodie for the right handed part of the population, im a lefty, so when are they going to make an ergo mouse for us??
well, i`ll just head down to Ned`s Leftorium, i need a left handed cellphone
Logitech UK has it down for GBP 72.90 . I don't know what that is in the former colonies.
Its a mouse... it points, it clicks, it scrolls..... its a mouse. Big whoop. Glad I didn't stay up for that.
I think that thing is bigger than the desk it'd be sitting on!
And like others have said, stay off the Jolt! You're pictures start sucking on too much caffeine! You know, they make digicams with this kool feature called Image Stabilization!
homerj: I second that impression. I am actually in the market for a new mouse as the one that came with my Media Center PC is crap, but honestly. This is almost as bad as the news of the no-news from WWDC2006.
Meh.
Holy balls! I just dug up the price on the Logitech website (strange how these inarwebs work - you can go look up things like the price of products on your own believe it or not)
Drumroll please......
$99.99 + 13.01 for S7H brings this pup to a cool $113 even.
Yeah... for another $57 I've got a Wii. I'll pass.
that's S&H, mi spreling ain't s0 grate thys mornign
The first few pics with it in his hand arent that bad, and I like the fisheye effect (though from a journolistic integrity standpoint...but thats another issue entirely).
I've hand issues with fine motor coordination my whole life, especially when I have caffine so I can relate. Definitely invest in a small tripod (MZ is right on with the gorilla pod suggestion, those things are great for on the run). If you are at home even placing the camera on a stack of books helps. Any flat stable surface really.
As for the camera, dont sweat the new and betters... t3h 0mG!!! 1'm t3h $0 mUCh 13373rzz than you!!! Your camera only has 5 megs of res, and mine has !!!5.1!!! Jesus people. Learn a little bit about what goes on with putting digital pics on a website. With a 500 by 375 image, on a website, being displayed to crappy lcds everywhere, (yes, they are, crts render colour better), it becomes largely irrelavant how MAXXXED OUT!!!! (t3h r0xX3rZZZ!!!) a camera is. I guarentee you that after being cropped, compressed, reformatted, et al, at this resolution the difference between a digital slr outputting 6.8 megs v. one outting 10.2 (assuming all settings are the same) is not detectable by any but the trained professional eye, and even they have a hard time.
Does the image achieve its purpose (which isnt giving dslr fanboys everywhere orgasms)? Yes? nuff said.

Blah, I don't think this deserves a 6.7. Maybe it's because I don't routinely scroll through thousand-page documents (or, when I do, I tend to just use the scroll bars), but this just doesn't sell me. It's a mouse. Big whup. It's got some new chrome function that makes me think, "Really? And I'll use this when?" Woo-hoo. It costs $99. I'll pass.

Shall we all hold our pinkies out in the air for you as it's obvious that digital image snobbery is in the room.
pointing out that CRT's are superior to LCD's at color reproduction is like saying the fat girl in the corner will be warmer in the winter than the cheerleader on your lap.
And DSLR's, no matter how good they get, will always be inferior to quality film photography, but far less convenient.
fanboys above were simply pointing out the fuzziness of said images from the shaking (likely induced by overly tight pants at the prospect of an exclusive). nobody cares about resolution. my 2 year old 2.0MP Casio M20U still works fine AND people ogle it's half-a-deck-of-cards form factor - two years old.
I just wet myself.
A dozen photos of the unboxing of a mouse? Next on Gizmodo: Unboxing of a bill from the water department.
well, another goodie for the right handed part of the population, im a lefty, so when are they going to make an ergo mouse for us??
As a person that does everything but golf left handed I've never figured out why ANYONE would mouse with their left hand.
Please post audio of the freespinning wheel. Does it go *WHIZZZZZZZZ!*? Or is it mostly silent?
Because some people are left handed Scharvey. It's not a preference issue.
About as exciting as a box of tissues.
at wooho:
"Shall we all hold our pinkies out in the air for you as it's obvious that digital image snobbery is in the room."
No. I'm saying that that is the problem. That is, that mps arent as relavant as all the fanboys want to think. I'm saying that (at this resolution) the max resolution of the camera is irrelevant. Your 2.0 would work just fine if used in the correct manner.
"pointing out that CRT's are superior to LCD's at color reproduction is like saying the fat girl in the corner will be warmer in the winter than the cheerleader on your lap."
Huh?!? WTF? Yes, I like cheerleaders. I'm dating a fine girl from N.O. right now, and she sits on my lap quite often...back in gizmo land...
What does formfactor have to do with image reproduction, backlightlighting, and colour gamut? We arent comparing how the thing sits on your desk, but rather the quality of the picture.
Realworld application? You work on Madison ave. (where all the design and ad firms are) and are giving a presentation to a potential client. The client chooses another vendor because all the colours are off. Why are they off? cause the pantone calibration on your fancy new 19 inch lcd sucks.... Happens all the time.
Don't get me wrong, LCDs have come a looong way, but for digital design, they simply cannot compare to a properly calibrated CRT. Furthermore, most LCDs being sold right now arent attempting to to superprecise colour reproduction. I work with HP's, NECs, and Dells at work, so I know what I'm speaking of.
cheers,

i'm left-handed, and i mouse with my right hand. so does most of the world i think.
only about 10% of the population is left handed, i bet less than 1% of computer users mouse with their left hand. and i bet the overlap (left handed people who are also left handed mouse users) is only 50%.
btw, how often do you all get a new mouse? mine is like 2 years old, an optical wireless scroll, and i don't know about you all, but mice don't die every other week... at least mine doesn't. just needs a battery change now and then.
btw i think it's ironic that car's steering wheels (not in UK or japan or australia) are on the left side of the car, and also game controllers D-Pad is on the left :-D
Stealth43,
I thought for a moment this thread was about the mouse...when did we go into a dissertation about how f$%^'d the colors are? Who cares about color when the pictures are shaking so bad you can hardly make out the actual image. Maybe that's a stretch, but, you get the idea.
In fact, if you examine the 3rd picture from the top, you might notice that it actually looks like Brian might be using a cell-phone to take these pictures, in which case, they don't look too bad!
Move on... nothing else to see here.
oops, i thought the Tivo thing was the midnight showing thingy. My bad.
And this only deserves a 5 max (probably less)on the scale.
I'm left handed and I use my mouse in my left hand....
I couldn't tell which post was the midnight special either - nothing posted since midnight was worthy of any special pre-launch teaser...
I'm left-handed, and I use the mouse with my right - always have. Adapt, people. I refuse to believe that the right hands of other left-handers are just glorified clubs. What do you think these intricate fingers and complex wrist joint evolved for? On second thought, don't answer that.
Uh, sweet mouse? The variable wheel is super-keen and all, but how heavy is that damned thing? Also, I'd like to still be able to see my monitor over my input devices. Pass.
nice way to generate a little excitement for a product. How much did Logitech pay you? You people should work for an ad agency selling stuff to people who dont need it. Genius!
Left-handed and left-mouse, the only benefit other than comfort for my precious lefty is that my co-workers tend to give up on ever trying to use my computer. (Lefty pointers and the buttons are switched)
No flying monkey robots? I am pissed.
Does it at least transform into some sort of flying mouse robot and run around on all it's fancy wheels and shoot lazers from it's deadly red lazer eye?
If so I am all in.
Heck... with SOOOOO many comments on this one blog alone...I NEED the fricking wheel feature!!!!!
My MX-1000 is not enough a
