It is hard to accurately place this device into a specific category. At the Mobile WiMAX Summit, Samsung recently unveiled this convergence device that is like a PDA, UMPC and regular computer all rolled folded into one. The P9000 can fold away into a nice one-pound package, and unfold to unveil an almost full-size QWERTY keyboard and LCD. It is powered by Windows XP and includes WiMAX and CDMA EV-DO for connectivity. Overall it is a pretty unique device, but I am in no hurry to toss out my laptop and PDA for this. I'd hate to be "that guy." You know, the person that pulls out the crazy PDA or laptop at a meeting just so people will stare at it and ask questions.

Looks cool. I'm interested in the price.
You don't want to be "that guy"? I thought that was what being a gadget-freak was all about? BTW...I'm assuming you're a gadget-freak since you're writing for Gizmodo.... ;-)
TRANSFORMEEERS, More than Meets the Eye!
WIMAX? Have they finished the standardization yet?
BTW, this thing looks cool but I know it will suck as a telephone, why: it has a windows operating system...
I have a fold out keyboard for my lifedrive that looks a lot like that. I already 'am' that guy.
I'm waiting on a UMPCLite type device that comes with a GOOD qwerty thumb board, wifi, highspeed cellular (I don't really care what flavor as long as its highspeed :p ) a processor that doesnt bog with an IM and a browswer window running, some basic text editing and email compatibility.
Is that too much to ask?
I don't really need a mobile PC, I need something with net access no matter where I am that I can check the internet on, IM, email, and update webpages. That last requirement and the first generally kill most mobile devices for me. I don't like watered down 'mobile' browsers, I want something with a decent enough screen that I can view most webpages in their native form.
Man, I was JUST describing my dream mobile device to a friend, and it was a lot like that. In my version the screen also unfolded in sections to create a bigger image (though probably with a seam in it), but this is pretty close to what I was thinking. I'd definitely be interested in buying this, depending on the price. I'm guessing though, that this is one of those "ship to Korea now and the US maybe later" devices.
I totally want to be that guy. I miss being that guy who could watch videos on his mp3 player...damn video ipod
What's wrong with being 'that guy'?
I'm shocked... no "origami" jokes? It practically begs for it.
It took me a little bit to figure out how the heck it folds up. This is pretty neato. if it was in the $400-600 range it would be a nice mobile alternative to a laptop. Of course this will top a grand.
This looks pretty spot-on to me, 30GB makes it big enough for dumping photo's/videos onto if you're on a lengthy holiday, big QWERTY for on the trot assignment writing/presentation preparation and small enough to dump in a back-pack. What's not to love?
Well, there is the fact that I'll never see one, let alone be 'That Guy' who actually gets one, as much as I want to be.
I hate it. Razzz.
samsung cant be all that hyped up about it.. look at the models.
Like the device, I would like to test it before I buy, and make it a bit cheaper than a good laptop, I want the UMPC to come down around $999 bucks and I think it would be a better deal
A step in the right direction but IMHO, not quite there yet.
To use this, I'd think you'd need a flat surface to unfold the keyboard, swivel out the screen and boot up WinXP... to look up a phone number!
Someone should designed the screen to be accessible without having to unfold the keyboard, which should only be required for data input.
A flash based HDD would be ideal for the sake of battery life and speed. But let's see them do that for under $999.
When it's hard to accurately place a device into a specific category, it could just mean that it'll do a bad job in any category.
<3 I've wanted a pocket sized PDA with a full sized keyboard for years now--the Zaurus CL series was the closest I've had, though.
