Some sad news for fans of PC gaming with word that Direct X 10 will only work for the next release of Microsoft's wonderful operating system, Vista. It had previously been rumored in the darkest corners of this vast Interweb that graphics card manufacturers wanted to put off Direct X 10 in order to give gamers the best possible graphics. Now we know it's true.
Apparently, the main reason why you won't be able to use Direct X 10 is because Windows XP's driver model doesn't mesh with the presence of more independent objects. Of course, no final Direct X-compatable hardware has been released yet, so there's no telling if this new API will really do anything special, like make world peace.
Direct X 10 will be Vista only [The Inquirer]

They should have named it Direct X X.
This is bad news for gamers. Consider how much crap Windows takes up as it is, now, imagine Windows Vista: The Flabbening taking up more of your precious cycles when what you wanna do is run the video gaming hotness.
Not to mention the fact that they actually want people to have to buy Vista.
they should have named it "another piece of crap os form Microsoft, guaranteed to have more security holes to keep you full of spy ware and viruses for ever... SUCKERS!!!!" ya that's what i would have called XP as well :P
i guess it is time to switch to a console
My ONLY reason for having a windows machine is for games (CS:Source, BF2). I cringed and felt sick when I had to buy XP and have NO plans to buy V(F)ista. I'll have to stick with the current games till EA and Valve start compiling for Linux
I tried the Beta last week. Don't know if it's just coincidence, by my hard drive is hosed completely (Partition Magic can't repartition it, neither can Linux fdisk). Before it died I did get a bit of a look at it. My Dell Optiplex GX620 (3.4 GHz, 1GB RAM) isn't powerful enough to run it with all its eye candy on -- that REQUIRES a "gaming video card". No transparency on window borders, for example, without 3d acceleration (why???). It was still dog slow even without the eye candy. I know this is just a beta, but they have a loooooong way to go. I couldn't find anything about Vista that made me want to upgrade from XP. XP is much faster. The eye candy would be nice, but I get that on my MacBook without killing the system performance or requiring ridiculous amounts of hardware. (I am a sysadmin, so I work with Linux, Windows, OS X, and even Netware). I also found the new system of control panels to be extremely difficult to navigate. Given that this is a major rewrite rather than simply a new version, I would recommend waiting for the first service pack to come out if you do see a reason to make the leap. This is a BIG piece of software. Let someone else debug it!
this won't last for long. like nearly every other feature of vista, it will get ported back to XP because of pressure from their user base and game developers.
i want my sims back, i cant play them, this is so stupid, i had them before. windows vista sucks...im very mad and hurt.
