Is the Zune just the Toshiba player with some re-arranged buttons? An insider at Microsoft gives us some food for thought. Stay with us on this.
First, Microsoft spun off a good portion of the Xbox 360 team to work on the Zune, including J Allard. They formed a new team called "Pyxis", which is working on the Zune. Since they only had about a year, from the launch of the Xbox 360 to this upcoming Thanksgiving, they were on a very tight, very aggressive schedule. No real time to design a completely new product from scratch.

Given Toshiba's ties with Microsoft, plus the Gigabeat's already tight integration with Windows Media Center—and the Zune's apparent Media Center-like UI—it seems likely that the Gigabeat would be the one Microsoft picked to baseline the Zune.
Although the button placement is similar, the screen size of the Zune seems to be a little bigger than the Gigabeat. So what do readers think?
This is the last Zune piece we'll do this week. Promise!

Didn't you guys see the results of your own poll? Enough with the zune stuff, okay?
Chen has some kind of Zune fetish. Will Microsoft please just send one to him so he can do whatever the hell he pleases with it.
Yeah, and Marilyn Monroe shot JFK and ran off with Jim Morrison to the lost city of Atlantis.
Give me a fu*king break Gizmodo are you that bored?
Almost every player has the similar baseline... lets see what did they "copy from the gigabeat"
It has a screen, buttons and a harddrive... and it runs a windows based software... lets see as far as im aware so does every other Non Apple PMC.. give me a break if you don't have actual new details on the Zune then why even post this?
Every PMC that runs the microsoft software is "tightly integrated with WMC"
Is this a new poster or something? Or have you just never seen a PMC that runs the Windows PMC software? they all have a similar UI to WMC...
The basis is the same but it isn't copied from the gigabeat its copied from the standard components of a media player, and last i checked the gigabeat didnt have Wifi a 400mhz processor and a fmtransmitter and reciever, nor did it have the builtin store functunality that zune is supposed to eventually have..
ALSO PLEASE GET YOUR STORY STRAIGHT..
"Pyxis" Is the Nano competitor that will eventually be released after this first zune device is released... or atleast Pyxis is it's codename...
GEE, why not look into the ZUNE partners and see if Toshi is one of them.
I doubt it.
Doubtful...
PS, when did the commenter links go in? I like it.
I think the Zune looks like a PSP.
i always thought it looked familiar to something, i just couldn't put my finger on it. it is in my opinion pretty much a copy and yes it is cchance. they both have the same button layout and the same layout alltogether. they are indeed suspiciously similar which makes the zune just yet another pmp to fall to the wrath of the ipod.
long live stevie j!
Why do you people trash the writers so much. It's kinda rude considering they're working so you can read up on your gadgets.
lol do i really have to go around the internet and start putting links to all the PMPs that have the same identical layout... would you rather the controls be above the screen? wow that would be odd your hand would be over the screen... hmm even the irivier has the same layout just instead of a round button control they have the slide control but its still the same layout.
I can assure you all that MS does not have an engineer with a handheld background who's doing product design. I can also virtually assure you that since all the other players in the market are up against the iMonolith they would gladly hand over their next-best-greatest design to MS for marketing and rebadging. It's funny that cchance is taking it as a personal affront, there's nothing unrealistic about the idea. Hmmm, cchance are you on the inside looking out, railing against the glass at the wedding below? Does it just break your heart or something? You're Bill Gates, aren't you!?
Hey Gizmodo: this just in. The Zune is actually going to be in the shape of an apple, and is going to come bundled with the entire Beatles collection, just to piss off the Cupertino Fruit Company. In response, the iPhone will be officially named iLetItBe.
Really, I'm a reliable source. I mean, I'm telling you about the iPhone AND the Zune, so I expect you to post all this immediately.
I can hear the knockoff companies in China rejoicing as we speak! Their zune fakes are basically already made.
