Our buddies who always get the girls because they don't drive '96 Sidekicks over at Jalopnik, posted this nugget. It's the Tankpedition - an example of the rubber track conversion system by Mattracks.
The conversion can take "as little as 30 minutes". For me, it took only 30 seconds. I'm in love...finally geeks have ruined the car world, too. We have no idea what the product costs, but trust me, it's worth every penny.

Can we get this option on a Hummer?
Awesome, now they need to make a pair for wheelchairs
LOL! I Remember seeing this^^ type of system in the back of popular science ages ago, (you know the shady ad section) but i always thought it was a fraud! who knew?
More things need tankification!
coolest car mod EVER!!!!!!
THETANK, I remember reading that same PopSci. I'm glad we're among friends here at the Giz. If I recall correctly, these Mattracks were between $80,000 and $100,000, certainly a pretty penny. But what price can you put on driving straight over the Sahara or up a ski slope in your Escalade?

Fit that to a Hummer and we'll have the manliest vehicle known to man. Scratch that, we'll have the manliest vehicle physically possible.
Hmmm. I can just see it now, "We get 2 mph on this suckers! What dyou get?"
"Ha ha, you beat me there. We get 2 gallons per mile. We only take it out on special occasions."
Freaking hillbillies! What will they think of next?
I saw these in person years ago set-up on a Bronco at the Texas Motor Speedway. The Hummer version has been done, I remember seeing pics of one in the snow. They also make smaller ones that go on ATV's. If i remember correctly they max out at 45mph.
Wait till everyone sees my pimped out Honda with these on!
Suddenly I feel a need to pimp my ride with these, but it does beg the question. Can you get spinners for them ? to complete the tasteless bling.
yeah i remember reading about this stuff in either popular science or popular mechanics... about 10 years ago. maybe more.
Chuck Norris does not put on treads to scale a mountain... treads put on Chuck Norris!
RadioShack has a radio-controlled H2 with Mattracks, for all the hill climbing fun without the price.

Here's a pic of the Hummer version:
Hummer Mattracks
on a customer's website -- he sold these quite a while ago, so don't bother asking. You can see the inside (facing the vehicle) of the track in the photo, including the stabilizer bar that keeps them from rubbing the chassis.
damn why don't my posts ever show up
Sockatume: Fit that to a Hummer and we'll have the manliest vehicle known to man. Scratch that, we'll have the manliest vehicle physically possible.
Not quite. For it to be the manliest vehicle possible, it would need:
- a roof mounted gun turret
- side mounted missile launchers
- a smokestack
- a plasma screen mounted in the back with a roof mounted satellite dish that pulls in all the sports channels
- custom beer keg storage with cooling system and built in tap
-built in tailgate grill and mini fridge prestocked with various sausages
and maybe also hood-mounted, gunmetal-coated stag antlers.
This is so like April, 06 for the urban assault wheelchair crowd.

imagine how long the standard axels are going to last... let alone the cv's or knuckles up front
Is it freeway legal?
Hey put robots in them and send them to Iraq
Maybe this way Ford will make some profits
The consumer version of the Mattracks aren't so bad, only 10k or so. The commercial version are the ones that are 80k. I have seen the consumer version that one guy put on his Jeep Wrangler. Pretty huge and beefy. You aren't going to be going anywhere quickly with them attached.
You wouldn't have to waste space on a spare tyre anymore.
it's a rental. the little sticker on the back is from the driving force, a rental/fleet vehicle company in northern alberta. and they don't rent vehicles with tracks. oops
Well, definitely wouldn't be legal here in Ontario: The edges of the "Tire" (Read: Tracks) go out beyond the wheel well covers.
saw this years ago.
Saw this at least two years ago on TV - history channel I think, "Tactical to Practical" or something like that.
Wow, I drove this bad bad boy last week after it sat all winter behind the office because no one had the bazzs to take it for a test run.
