VMware Beta For Mac

People were confused about VMware's presence at WWDC this year. Wonder no more, as the company's official site has spilled the beans about its upcoming Beta version for the Mac. With VMware, you can run "any PC OS on Mac OS X without rebooting," similar to the recent Parallels software. There should be an official announcement during the keynote.

  • Please, for the love of god, it is VMware not VMWare. And our product is going to wipe the floor with Parallels. We've been working on this for some time ;-)

  • Good point, Baka; I'm sure those Parallels guys just threw that shit together in a week or so.

  • What kind of gaming performance might you see? Hmmmmm If I could do my .NET development on a mac, that would be tight, yo. Of course, I guess I could dual boot and do it, too, right?

  • I'm guessing this is just for intel macs, right? And does this mean that VMWare Workstation for the PC will also run OS X?

  • no, of course VMware won't run OS X, only on OS X. sorry.

  • Little late to market, but if Sony isn't behind it there's still lots of potential for success.

  • My favorite part about this announcement is the screenshot VMware has up of the application running XP on a Mac....they've got Parallels installed and it's visible in the Dock!

I guess immitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

  • let me guess... same deal as Parallels? some random proprietary disk image format i'm required to use? yippee.

here is something that would be useful :

let people boot their Boot Camp partitions via virtualization under OSX. see... then you could CHOOSE to either boot completely into XP... or if you just need to check something quick you could boot the partition in a window under OSX without having to quit all your OSX apps and shut down first.

that's an actual feature i think would impress people. otherwise it's 'just like Parallels... well... oh you can use other VMware images too.' ... oh. wow. watch me not care.
