Apple's upcoming iPod will make its debut this November and will definitely feature a touchscreen, Gizmodo has learned. Let's just say that we have a couple of people fairly high up the Apple food chain who have made it known that the iPod's touchscreen is truly the bee's knees. Apple is also apparently working its tail off to make sure that the planned November launch of the new iPod will still happen.
Our super secret sources didn't reveal any information regarding the iPod's rumored wireless capabilities, however.
Oh, and those pictures? Those were supplied by a fine reader of ours, Samuel Mularczyk. Supposedly, they were found on Apple's Web site. Granted, they pictures do read "iPhone," but no one ever said that the iPod and iPhone won't be one in the same, right? (But yes, it could just be another silly mock up.)
UPDATE: Oh, vanity, thy name is fake iPhone picture! Ok, so we're pretty darn sure the above picture is as fake as fake can be. How do we know? Well, the Darth Vader artwork was actually done by another reader, Kreg Steppe, some time ago. We'll work on getting better sources for pictures next.

Of course these are real,
all ipods have the word "ipod" on the front.
Looks impossibly thin, but who knows? Where does the charger plug in? Or does it come with a "recharge pad" that you sit it on? That would be neat.
I'm unconvinced. Battery life on this thing would be unacceptable if a full-size screen was displayed during music playback.
Finally! Now we can submit our req for a new iPod...about time :-)
I'm just gonna say that having to control my ipod with a touch screen would just plain make it suck. I don't wanna have to pull a stylus out of the back of the ipod every time I need to change the volume or skip tracks.
Great. As if the current iPods aren't marred by greasy fingerprints enough...
I may have to reconsider getting one of these iSlave phones if this mock up is true. But Im not holding my breath this to happen.
Are these the same sources that said this was dropping on April 1?
my favorite touch is the DS Lite stylus..
Where on Apple's website were these found..? Come on, really... is this worth the bandwidth..? I'm sure your 'high up in the food chain' comment was as tounge in cheek as the rest of this post, but I'm going to have to stop looking at the web until Monday to avoid all these pointless WWDC posts. No-one really knows. Apple always keeps a lid on these things. Apart from the banner photo, no-one has the inside scoop on anything. Remember the iHome??
The iPhone engraved on the front apparently has a keyboard shortcut. How convenient!
From what i've heard about your secret sauce...
If there really is a touch screen, maybe we see the return of the "Newton" in a new way?
I really would love a PDA again, and a merger between the iPod and a PDA seems to be the next logical step.
Making a decent phone is easy, what most modern Phones suffer from is that they started out as a phone, that's the simple part, the rest is just glued on. If Apple goes the opposite way it may actually be useful.
You know what I look forward to? the week after WWDC, when all the rumors of i_anything will finally be over. 'cos I'm about done hearing about Apple bull for a while (and their stock better not take a tumble)
So is this that iPod killer we keep hearing about?
Why don't they just kill the iPod and be done with it? If the next logical step for the iPod is a widescreen version with a touch interface why not revive the Newton? If you could tack on Media Player functions to the old Newton (and a color screen of course ;) you could kill Palm altogether and give Microsoft a serious run for its money and the Pocket PC. Hell add Phone abilites on top of that and your could kill Microsoft. Hopefully the iPhone is just the smartphone version of the eventual iPDA and that there will be an actual iPDA.
I can see it now... iNewton (PDA Phone) & iNewton Nano (Smartphone)
I can dream can't I?
I don't like the stylus idea. I use my mp3 player in my car, plugged into the speakers via a cassette adapter. I like my microphoto because it has touch-sensitive buttons. If a shitty song comes on or if I need to change the volume, I can skip to the next track or turn it up without taking my eyes off of the road.
If I'm using my mp3 player and not driving, odds are that I'm either a.) trying to fall asleep or b.) at work, with the mp3 player in my back pocket with the wire threaded up the back of my shirt (possibly secured in place with first aid tape, if I'm feeling meticulous) and the unused earbud (usually the right) tucked under one of the straps of my bra.
If the former, having to pull out a stylus to skip songs instead of just moving one of my fingers would wake me up. If the latter, I couldn't just reach into my back pocket and make a minor adjustment without actual buttons to feel my way.
Touchscreens will ruin all three of these activities.
