iPhone vs. BlackBerry Bold: The Side-by-Side Photos and Video

The 3G iPhone and the BlackBerry Bold are two of the most buzzed-about phones due out this year. And while we don't have any shots of the new iPhone, it's a safe assumption that it won't look all that much different than the current model. With that in mind, the folks from The iPhone Blog have taken a bunch of comparison shots and some video of the Bold and the iPhone together, showing us just how the two compare. Hey, I didn't realize the BlackBerry had a keyboard and the iPhone didn't! You learn something new every day. Hit the jump for the unsurprisingly-biased yet in-depth video and follow the source link at the bottom for the large gallery. More »

Giz Explains: An Easy Primer on GPS

In this week's Giz Explains, we're doing a quick rundown of a sweet technology that has evolved from a (deadly) serious military application to becoming a household utility, found in all kinds of gadgets: GPS. More »

Rumor Smashed: AT&T Not Insuring iPhones For $5 a Month

We knew that rumor about AT&T iPhone insurance for $5 was too good to be true, seeing as we went through the same thing back in 2007 when the iPhone was launched. AT&T's insurance company, Asurion, isn't going to cover that super expensive phone for only $5 a month, even with the $125 deductible on pricier smartphones and PDAs. Tough luck guys, but you can always get AppleCare and protect yourself from most problems on your phone not caused by you being a dumbass. [MobileWhack]

How to Better Erase an iPhone When Selling/Repairing

We knew that refurbished iPhones have their previous owner's data on it, but how do you protect yourself when Apple won't go through the trouble of wiping phones out before passing them on? By unsyncing everything, then loading it up with music and videos until the phone is full to overwrite the old data that was there. Does this work? We thought the contacts, calendars, SMS and phone calls were stored on the OS partition, not the media partition where videos and music files go. More »

AT&T to Complete Their 3G Network in June

This isn't huge news that will change your life, but AT&T is aiming to have the first round of their HSPA 3G network complete by the end of June. The company is addressing their network's upload speed, bringing High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) in to complement the existing High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in their last six markets. At Least 20 People Want to Pay $3000 for the 24-Carat Gold iPhone

When we saw that 24-carat gold iPhone last month, we thought it was too tacky gold for everybody except for Mr. T. Apparently we were wrong. Twenty people have bid 55 times to plunk down real money—and at least two are willing to pony up over two grand—for this gaudy slab of soon-to-be-outdated tech. Or, as our new intern said, "Maybe Chamillionaire has 20 eBay accounts, and we've been overestimating his understanding of how an auction works." Either way, it's a sad state of affairs. [eBay]

Regional Carriers Want the iPhone, Tell FCC to Ban Phone Exclusives

The wireless industry is essentially at the saturation point, so exclusive phones matter more than ever, especially ones like the iPhone for AT&T or the touchscreen Blackberry Thunder for Verizon, phones that really drive people to particular carriers. So it's no wonder the Rural Cellular Association (repping smaller regional carriers) is petitioning the FCC to ban exclusive deals, which obviously push people out of smaller local carriers to the established juggernauts, since it can take months or years for trickle down. The iPhone is at the center of the complaint. More »

Apple's Top Designer Explains Design

Most of you probably know Jonathan Ive even if you don't recognize the name—he's Apple's head of design (otherwise known as the company's Senior Vice President of Industrial Design). And he's chiefly credited for designs of the iMac, iPod and iPhone. In an interview with The Independent, he shared some of his philosophies on designing for Apple, and just how Apple "does it." Refurbished iPhones Might Still Have Previous Owners' Personal Data, No Way to Erase It

You might already know that performing a restore on your iPhone does not, in fact, completely wipe out your personal data. But it's cool if you take it to Apple, because if your broke-ass iPhone does become a refurb for some discount-seeking soul, Apple scrubs it to the bone, right? Nope. Using a standard forensic toolkit (or probably just some decent quasi-hacking), your personal data can be recovered from a refurb, as Jonathan Zdziarski—the guy who wrote the iPhone Forensics Manual for Law Enforcement, ironically—discovered. A detective bought his past iPhone, and was able to pull his email, photos and financial info, no sweat. The scariest part? More »

Updated Napster DRM-Free Store <3 iPods

Napster announced the transition to all DRM-free MP3s several months back, but now their 6 million song catalog is fully up and running. Now compatible with iPods/iPhones, Napster even claims that their inventory is "50% larger than any other MP3 store," though we're a little confused on the math since iTunes offers "more than 6 million [songs]" themselves. Most of Napster's catalog will be available at 256kbps bitrate, and they claim to be the first store to offer 100% MP3-formatted tracks. Anyone gonna give the service (another) go?

UPDATE: Ahh, we get it. Largest "MP3 store," not digital music store. Nice catch, commenters!

iPhone 3G Launch Date Confirmed

We all suspected it, but now it is confirmed: someone very, very close to the 3G iPhone launch has told me that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th. The second-generation iPhone will be available worldwide right after the launch, and not at year's end, as previously thought. The new model will also herald new sales policies in some countries. RIM CEO: BlackBerry Bold Not Inspired by the iPhone At All, Really

RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, who was hating hard on touchscreen keyboards last time we heard from him, took the defensive on the BlackBerry Bold's iPhone-esque aesthetics at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium, saying that the Bold "wasn't a response to another device.... This was actually designed three years ago and the actual physical design of this product—I have the original models from 2006." Syncing to iTunes aside, Mike, I take it that this would be your response to the iPhone then? What do you guys think? Update: Changed the picture to live shot comparison, rather than renders. More »

iPhone Windows Vista Skin Makes Steve Jobs Cry Tears of Blood

Best, worst or most hilarious iPhone skin ever? VistaPerfection 2.0 is a complete Windows Vista skin for the iPhone with over 90 icons, wallpapers, a dock, sound effects and everything else Vista like the Sidebar and Start menu. I'm not sure why anyone would do this to their iPhone, but be warned, since it's not on Installer yet (soon), the process ain't exactly painless, requiring jailbreak, SSH access and SummerBoard. Full instructions at the link—send us pictures if you're ballsy enough to do this. It's not so we can laugh at you, honest.[Modmyifone via Just Another iPhone Blog via Technabob]

3G iPhone Case Shows Thicker, Curvier Backside (and Front-Facing Camera Too?)

This isn't the first time we've heard that iPhone case manufacturers have gotten an early peek at the 3G iPhone, but this rendering on XSKN's site for the EXO mask iPhone 3G is obviously a bit more detailed than the rough sketches from a couple weeks ago. It lines up with them though, as well as what we've heard earlier: It's a bit thicker, with a more pronounced curve to the back, though it's hard to tell if the headphone jack is flush now. The earpiece hole spans almost the whole width of the phone—could it be for a front-face camera? Apply the usual skepticism here, but this could be plausible, given that cases will have to be ready in time for launch, so manufacturers likely already have the specs. [XSKN via Mac Rumors]

Apple Cutting Deals For More Ringtones

According to the New York Times, multiple label executives have confirmed that Apple is looking to expand its iTunes ringtone collection by June—far more than they have in the past. Their interests include both downloadable song snippets and ringback tones (new ringers). But apparently, the labels feel that these ringtones should cost more over a hypothetical 3G iTunes Store than the current Wi-Fi option. Why do music labels feel that way? Oh, because they are a bunch of greedy dinosaurs who hate you, that's why. [NYTimes]

Video of iDial Application for iPhone

It seems as if we are being bombarded with ingenious applications for the iPhone, and iDial is no different. Basically a rotary dial on the touchscreen, it's probably more time-consuming than useful, but chapeau for coolness. Shame the video is so blurred, though. [Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

Apple Goes To War (This Time Not With Microsoft)

When Apple purchased chip manufacturer P.A. Semi, the Department of Defense was worried. Why? P.A. Semi manufactures chips for ten different military systems, and has $100 million in deals with the DoD over the next four years. And the DoD never expected Apple to keep supporting the sweet, deadly chips.

But they were wrong.

AT&T Flip Flops on One iPhone Policy

I've come to the conclusion that AT&T just loves toying with us when it comes to the iPhone. Just days after limiting buyers to a single iPhone, it's back to the old threefer rule—apparently they found enough iPhones lying around in a closet somewhere to go back to biz as usual.
