Despite—or maybe because of—one analyst raising a furor with comments about a PS4 being unlikely, Sony's VP of Technology says a PS4 will be launched by Sony. He throws down.
To say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change is a bit far fetched.
VP Paul Holman also reiterates the PS3's "processing power" and that it's not really a gaming console as much as an all-in-one entertainment center. He said the PS3 could possibly come with a keyboard and mouse to let users easily access the net or use third-party OSes installed on the machine. Definitely interesting, the way Sony's not completely hating on hacks the way Microsoft is.
PS4 In 2010 Claims Sony. Major PS3 Upgrades In Between [Smarthouse via TechEBlog]

OMFG!! PS4!! I am so totally getting on line outside BestBuy RIGHT NOW!
PS3 is so last week.
well with sonys track record of delays read "comming in 2010" as "put it on your christmas wishlist for 2037"
Are we sure the PS3 exists? I havent seen one yet.
OS X on a PS3, make that sucker dual bootable and a larger drive.... I'm game. I wonder if my brother would mind me taking apart his PS3 now, or after he's gone to New Zealand?
will it plug directly into my brain? Giving me seductive dreams and little slices of heaven, just like little angels shaking their asses over me sprinkling fairy dust that was bestowed by St.Gabrile?
Or will I just end up with another over-priced game system?
my impression was that the Play Station in general had a 10 year lifespan, or at least that's what Sony said... where did all that go. Also i couldn't care less about a media hub at the moment all i want is my games and even there they have under delivered. Sorry Sony enough is enough.
2010 is a little soon... spending 600 busck on a game machine that will be outdated in 4 years? ok for a computer, but gaming systems should be more like 5 or 6...
I think 2010 sounds a bit soon too...especially since Sony's been saying the "PS3 is designed to last 10 years."
The explanation for all the PS3 delays was because of all the new technology (cell processor, BluRay) they put in to 'future proof' it for a while.
I'm sure the PS3 will last 10 years, but it doesn't mean if they come out with a PS4 in four years that mass hysteria won't take over and make everyone want to buy that, since it's new and they must have it at any price.
If blueray wins the war this thing will last a good long time as it's useful for movies as well so there's probably not going to be a reason to get anything better, unless the next generation console and the games it can play are too much temptation to resist, which it will be for many.
Heck the PS2 looks great still, and tons of good titles available from what I've seen, but it's not new anymore and if there's something better to be had, the game crews will jump on it. I'm a PC gamer die hard, but I may get one just to watch movies on in HD, it's a load cheaper than the blueray players are by themselves.
Nope, that's what PlayStation 9 is supposed to do, remember?
See stupid sony!
I say this cause they always lie! They said PS3 would be relevant and not out-dated for close to 10 years which is obviously an exaggeration like they always do.
If a game system still has life, why cut off it's life support?
"Definitely interesting, the way Sony's not completely hating on hacks the way Microsoft is."
That's really funny, considering $ony's stance on homebrew denials on the PSP. They have done everything possible to gimp that glorious little black box. They may allow their own "alternate" operating systems, albeit crippled enough not to allow third-party developers to create ways to circumvent DRM on movies, music and games.
If they were smart they would have already come up with their own PS1 ports for the PSP. People would gladly pay to play those "retro" games on a handheld platform. As it is, there is so little left to do with the PSP, in part due to the limited capacity and high cost of Sony's Memory Stick media.
I don't trust a damn thing they say they will do. They are utterly self-defeating in nearly every aspect of their business.
Four years is just silly speculation. There is no way that Sony will release a PS4 so soon. It will take them at least five years to make a worthwhile profit on the PS3. And allow time for games developers to really flesh out of the PS3s potential and produce the stunning games we are waiting for.
Look how long it took for developers to squeeze every ounce of quality and game play from the PS2.
In my opinion, talk of PS4 so soon is just bizarre. It makes no business sense. Sony may have made some production mistakes with the PS3 but everyone else is making the mistake of not looking at everything the PS3 will deliver in future.
Taking a long term view, the PS3 is not really that much of a development on from the PS2, just the same with more power and functionality all round.
The PS4 will have to have something much more than even more processing and graphics power. It will need to offer some features we can't even think about right now. Something beyond voice activation, facial recognition, virtual 3D. The PS4 will have to sit alongside whatever other technological developments are around in several years time. It would be foolish to deliver a simple incremental upgrade so soon. After all, some people are happy to stick with their current Gen consoles because, at the end of the day, fun is fun. Meaning there's a lot of enjoyment still to be had from exisiting consoles, so how much of a need is there really to splash out for 'more' of the same?
Nah' the PS4 is still at the pencil sketches and a big eraser stage while Sony look to the long term and the bigger picture in terms of other technological breakthroughs and trends.

But wait, Wait a minute....
Aren't the people paying for the P$3 "paying for the potential of this GREAT system that will last 10 years",another CROCK from the company of hype and no delivery...2007 and 2010 are 3 years apart, not 10...Besides, No Sony product I've ever had lasted more that a couple years before dying...
i think its just people who see this rediculious price and want to see the next system soon and cheaper not some polished up ps2 with no evolution its just add ons like blue ray and a "faster processor" i wouldnt spend the money to see how much faster it goes. thats where the talk of a ps4 came from and of course playstation had to make a statement it would look weird if they didnt there the masters of hype.
