So the Nintendo Wii has that fancy pants wireless Wiimote thing. And because it allows full gyration controls the Wii needs a fancier sensor. Enter the sensor bar that we first saw a couple days ago. It seems if sunlight is shining directly into the sensor barit will not function properly or at all.
Ironically this flaw was discovered in a Wii demo room at Nintendo World. The Wii demo stations were set up by a window and at one point light was shining directly in and therefore disabling the sensor. Better start rearranging those rooms, kids. Or boarding up the windows (if they aren't already).

This doesn't seem to be that big of a problem, because if the sun is shining directly into your television the picture is going to be washed out... unless you have one of those fancy schmancy televisions.
I really don't see what the problem is.
I've always been able to play with my wii in the sun and it works every time.
Unless you have a fancy schmancy television, this is a moot point.
If your sensor bar, and therefore television were faced directly towards the sun, you'd get mad glare and reflectivity plus a washed out picture.
Move on...
Meh. I don't like the sun making glare on my TV screen so the lighting is already set to keep that from happening.
Curse you, Daystar! Yeah... I bet most people already have their abode arranged so as to mitigate the effects of that digusting ball of hatred and vitamin D.
Windows?! We don't need no stinking windows.
looks like this thing is starting to come all the wii back down to earth....
*must...ignore...grammatical...nazi..urges...*GAHHHHHH
Okay, I'm done. I didn't like the sun anyways. Ditto on not wanting glare. Ugh.
Halogen lights will also screw it up, but (IIRC) not as bad as sunlight.
Won't matter much to me, as I live in my mother's basement anyways!
Is it sad that when I saw the headline, I thought to myself "WTF does Sun Microsystems have to do with the Wii?"?
Just watching tv messes up with Direct sunlight, not considering forcing your eyes to early retirement.
This happens to EVERY infrared device. This has nothing to do with the Wii. The sun gives off infrared light which interferes with the receiver.
And here's when the jokes start flying about how video-game-playing-nerds have yet another reason to avoid direct contact with the sun.
Yup. Coming a wii bit back to earth. Still better than being prematurely buried like the PS3, however. /snark
Who would've thought direct sunlight on an infra-red sensor would cause problems?
Oh God oh God sell your Nintendo stock, who could've known that white light several orders of magnitude brighter than any room lighting would mess with an infra-red sensor.
The Wii hates light, the 360 can cook my eggs, and the PS3 cost more than my car. (If minimum wage doesn't go up nor should console price.) If anyone would just make a true classic game again then I might put up with some of it all. For now I'm just going to sit back and see who sucks least.
I do hope it's not the Wii. The idea behind it intrigues me I just hope when it's out it's not a Gamecube. I already have one and I don't need a second, eh. (Don't make fun)
i dont see how this couldnt be fixed with some software. it will just have to be sensitive to a narrower frequency of light. i somehow dont see this being a problem by the time the wii comes out.
"i dont see how this couldnt be fixed with some software. it will just have to be sensitive to a narrower frequency of light. i somehow dont see this being a problem by the time the wii comes out."
You don't get it. That evil ball of flame emits light at *all* frequencies. It was designed to render your wii insensitive.
If only we didn't live on a planet with a bald spot. Damn you, ozone layer!
first you screw up my eyes, then you give me cancer and now you rape my wii ... wtef sun? we are so over.
Not to mention that the daystar is also brighter than most manmade sources of light as well, so it'll desensitize anything it hits directly to the point where you can't make out the signal you want.
What idiot plays games in a room with sunlight in it anyway?
