Slingbox Pro, A/V, and Tuner Reviewed (Verdicts: Ya, OK, Meh)

CNet's John Falcone lines up the three new Slingbox video streamers, and puts em to work.

He gives the $250 Pro model an 8.3. He likes its ability to stream high definition over the internet to PCs and Windows Mobile devices at 720p/1080i resolutions. Not to mention any video coming in through standard composite, S-vid, and coax inputs.

The $180 A/V model earns an 8.0, without legs long enough to run HD. (Just S-vid and composite are included, without a tuner.)

The $180 Tuner model gets a 7.0, with only a coax input capable of running basic cable or the dreaded bunny ears. We might have given this model a 6—We encourage the upgrading of TV setups before spending money on streamers.

  • Slingbox saved us last year just after Hurricane Katrina. The cable service was not up and running for almost two weeks after it hit, and we were stuck in a hotel in Biloxi going nuts. One of our company's tech guys brought his notebook down, hooked it up to the hotel's big screen and we were able to watch the OSU-Texas game. It was a big deal being so far from home helping out with that mess, and finally being able to relax and watch some television. I'd buy the guy that designed it a beer!

  • none work with digital cable though so they are all pretty useless to me.

  • yeah? well sling this!

( grabs crotch and gives finger )

  • how do you mean they don't work with digital cable? meaning, they don't also function as a cable box? these suckers take any "video out" and stream it, digital cable or otherwise

  • How do you figure they don't work with digital cable? I have comcast digital HD with DVR and have been streaming with my original Slingbox for over a year. I can even watch the HD channels. Heck I stream to my cell phone with great quality with this thing.

  • You guys still being sponsored by Ocean Spray Cranberries?

  • And the original Slingbox can be considered the Tuner and A/V model - it has both (coax and A/V), and you can pick between them! So the only one that interests me is the Pro...

As for digital cable, well, who watches without a PVR these days? Slingbox works great with PVRs. (It will work with a cablebox too... and unless you fight over the TV a lot, just hook it up to one of the lesser-used boxes).

  • Hey Guys,

Most people want to buy Slingbox in order to watch TV at work, but most companies have firewall and do not allowed video streaming, therefore the device get useless. While you are at home, you can watch your real TV and why bother with Slingbox. Does any body could work his Slingbox behind company firewall?
