Just how much living-room cabinet space are you going to have to sacrifice when you purchase a PlayStation 3 instead of a Nintendo Wii? Will your 1985 entertainment center fit your Xbox 360 in the same slot as a Nintendo NES? All your questions will be answered if you look at the picture.
More thoughts after the jump.
After seeing the sizes, it's really apparent how small the Wii is. Taking out the next-gen DVD drive and using less-sophisticated hardware may make for a compact box, but in our minds won't affect the enjoyability of the Wii in the least.
And it's also surprising that it's even smaller than the NES, though that console needed a big slot to put the cart into.

The 'footprint' of a PS3 is still smaller than everyday A/V components and it includes the integrated powersupply.
I don't get what everyone's problem is with it.
If you want a 'portable' system buy a PSP or DS (or a Gizmondo on sale).
or hack your 360, water cool it, and make it into a laptop a la ben heck.
So what's the source of this size comparison diagram? With the icons, it looks like it was generated vice created. Credit where credit is due?
TonyC...
Giz just did an article on Sizeeasy.com a few days back....
why are the 360 measurements in millimetes, and the rest inches? dont exactly help for a comparo...
I love how the Xbox 360's measurements are in Metric. Why keep it simple and use inches for all 4 when you can mix it up?
Other than that it's a very useful comparison.
We couldn't dig up any new information on why the PS3 sucks, so we decided to complain about the physical dimensions of what is essentially an A/V component that is smaller than most A/V components out there? Oh, but it is slightly bigger than an Xbox 360, and much bigger than the Wii, so it has to be crap, right?
If it was the AppleStation3, we wouldn't even know the Wii existed, right? :)
Tell me more about this Applestation3 you speak of....
(actually please don't!)
Xbox 360
12.2 x 10.2 x 3.3 inches
here are each systems measurements in Holy cubits
(25.03 inches to 1 Holy Cubit)
.5163 x .4394 x .1598 ps3
.4864 x .4061 x .1306 360
.3995 x .3196 x .0998 nes
.3395 x .2397 x .0779 wii
360 measurements in inches:
12.17 x 10.16 x 3.270
am I the only one baffled by the fact that the 360 sold by microsoft, and American company is the only system who's measurements are metric... what's that about?
Because Jason Chen (or a Giz lacky) input the measurements himself to create this on Sizeeasy.com and it has nothing to do with Microsoft.
I'm going to have to change my name, now.
Thank you, djdare, I'll get out my cubitstick and clear a spot for my Wii when I get home from work...
(There are so many things about that sentence that sound wrong...)
what's a millimeter?
word, just figured if Noah built an entertainment center on the ark, he'd probably need that info...
I like how this a reasonably informative and essentialy factual post, yet some people are freaking out and acting as if it were is some sort of attack on the PS3.
The integrated power supply is the moneyshot here... Plus, when the monolith is sitting in your room, it'll be nice to know you just dumped a pile of cash on something significant.
I have a feeling the PS3 is going to get taunted at school...
What? These systems take up space?!? What kind of future is this? Where are the flying cars and the quarter-sized super-computers?
I'm outraged. (and who the hell measures in anything less than penis lengths?)
Wait... what? People put cabinets in their living room now? Next thing you're going to tell me is that I need a bigger TV than the 13" POS I'm using before I go out and buy my Wii.
I've got the solution! Buy an entertainment center cabinet with a spot for the original xbox. You could fit all the others in that one spot alone.
FlashSandbox: Because that would be a measurment relative to the reader, and would require Gizmodo to have to inquire about the size of your "device" in your profile. Some folks though that might be a tad intrusive, not to mention the "divide by zero" errors your profile would then produce when converting size metrics.
And yet nothing on the size of the power supplies that will be hanging off the back. Let's see a real comaprison with everything included!
Sorry, I'm confused. Does the graphic represent the size of the price tag on these systems (inflation adjusted)?
The PS3 has no brick and the NES doesn't either, so after you add the bricks, the XBox is bigger, just not all in one place.
Thrifty Techie:
I produced one showing the size as a form factor of 1 dollar bills (ie..how thick the stack is)...
You can't even see the 1 dollar bill in the comparison though.

The NES has a brick. Just because you put the brick at the end where the plug is doesn't mean it's not a brick.
This is so biased. Why is the XBOX in millimeters ? So that you don't realize that it's almost as big as the PS3 ? And so what if the console is a little bigger than the competition ? What really matters is the games and for that I'm all Playstation (by the way I have an XBOX360 too).
Is it just me or is that the slimmest NES ever known to man? Mine is a lot more than 2.5" thick. Maybe they meant SNES.
Wallwart != Brick. A brick goes in the middle of the cord, a wallwart f*cks up your powerstrip.
As for the "bias", you can SEE that the XBox is almost as big as the PS3, so who cares what the units are?
I don't believe it.
a wallwart is a type of brick. it is a subset. in any case the point is that it takes up a non-negligible amount of space.
I'd like to see this graphic in terms of number of games per device.
i'd like to see this graphic in terms of number of games per device.
We all know that bigger is better - As long as it doesn't sit there and suck my will to live...
Anyways, I think they should make these things upgradable... you know, new processor, bigger hard drive, new graphics card... hang on, I've got one of those... damn!
I dont even care if the PS3 is the size of my porn collection. The thing is, once you settle it down, it stays there beautifully with ur home system...
By right, the PS3 is smaller comparing it with the 360, remove the brick, remove the multi-card reader, remove the Blu-Ray HardDisk, make it external just like the 360 HD-DVD...

I wish they showed the original Xbox in this comparison. I'd be interested to know if the Xbox's title of "Biggest Video Game Console Of All Time" has been usurped.
only time will tell
Geez, add in the Xbox 360's new dumba$$ HD-DVD player addition and lets see what system truly has the biggest footprint. I'm still waiting to see what the games for the PS3 will be like, but I still think it has the edge.
So I guess this makes the PS3 the console equivalent of the Battlestar Galactica?
Ummm... what about the big Nintendo stick that sits in front of your telly? Think that one should count a bit too.
I like the idea of putting my Wii in with my DVD collection next to my telly instead of with all my laserdisc players n such.
Thing about the PS3 is that it aint stackable really. That curvy roof means it has to sit on top. The xbox360 suffers from this a wee bit, but not so much that u can't put other stuff on top. Then again, most previous consoles (not xbox) seem to have that toploading thing going on. Ugh.
Personally, I like how my chess set stacks with my Cluedo and twister in my cupboard under my stair.
It's what you do with it that counts.
I haven't owned (or really played) a console since NES. But unless these new consoles only come with wireless controllers (which I know the WII does) then the console will have to be taken out of the cabinet to play it, right?
The original Xbox was
12.6 in wide x 10.2 deep x 4 in high so the PS3 is slightly bigger.
ugly...
You don't have a door to this magical cabinet? Open it.
Loving the use of sizeasy but it would be even better if it was credited in the article.
Nice use of sizeasy.com but I do think you should credit them in the article.
Aren't we fogetting a drive somewhere?
(yawn)
who give's a sh*t anyway?
Just how much living-room cabinet space are you going to have to sacrifice when you purchase a PlayStation 3 instead of a Nintendo Wii?
Jeezus! Hey, let's whine about the PS3's glossy finish too! You know if the sun shines through your window and glares off that black finish just right, it could blind your babies! Sony hates children! I mean...WTF?!!?
the hummer sells well even though it's a huge waste of space. I belive all 3 new systems will be fine, but I do find it hard on the ol' pockets.
That's a huge bitch!
One Wii to rule them all, One Wii to find them, One Wii to bring them all, And in the darkness make them wing their arms around and look like jackasses.
Woohoo! Can't wait for the black one to come out.
Butch, with consoles getting as powerful as they are, you really shouldn't be stacking them anyway. Adequate ventilation is about as important as electricity itself today. I can only imagine that even if the PS3 was a perfect rectangle, stacking stuff on top of it would just be a ba-ad idea. And isn't the '360 prone to overheating as well? Or has that been addressed/fixed somehow? I really don't know. I'm saving my money for the Wii. Point is, though, stackability shouldn't be considered, because it isn't an option you should be considering anyway. =)
