New PS3 Kiosk in the Wild

ps3_monster_kiosk.jpg

Sony is ramping up their hands-on PS3 promotion with a new kiosk at Bic Camera in Kawasaki. I'm not sure if the design is meant to scare off children or attract gorillas, but we are sure that Sony put some major hardware behind the unit. We're talking about 4 hi-def Bravia displays that must make the costs of such installations incredibly expensive, even for Sony.

Unfortunately the unit only plays video for now. And I'm guessing our local retailers won't be sporting any displays this obnoxiously opulent - which is our loss...big, big loss.

  • Has anyone noticed the font Sony is using is the same as the Spider-man movies? Ah, I just checked - Sony happens to be the distributor of the movies. Coincidence? I think not!

You couldn't be more late vandez....

  • It reminds me of the black obelisk in the sci-fi classic 2001; black, suspicious and your not allowed to play with them either

  • Is it just me or is the PS3 the size of a small child?? It actually appears to be BIGGER than my Small-Form-Factor Compaq Evo d510 Machines. You might as well have a desktop tower that looks nice, rather than trying to shoe-horn a full-fledged PC with full-fledged PC parts into something that's supposed to be the size of a gaming console.
You have to stop and think to yourself: At what point does it stop being a game and become a computer?
And I thought that the power brick (more like cinder block) for the XBox 360 was huge. Wonder how big the one for the PS3 is going to be?

  • davidfbecker: You couldn't be more uninformed. The power supply in the PS3 is internal, which makes for some of its size.

  • It gets your attention and stands out. Isn't that the point of an in store display?

That being said, it looks very 80's to me. I guess it's the red and black (A-Team, Knight Rider).

The only thing I don't like is the curved top. I usually put my console underneat my LCD monitor (TV/PC LCD monitor) on my computer desk, as I'm awamped for space, but now that's not possible.

  • These demo kiosks don't actually include a working PS3. The units playback compressed, unplayable looped video.

The blow article states that the videos are compressed and do not reflect the final image quality of the PS3. They could be, in fact, upscaling DVD players instead of Bluray players in the kiosks.

A little alarming that, 6 weeks from launch, and no real PS3s to be seen anywhere. Prior to the Xbox 360's launch, Microsoft had playable kiosks up all around the world and they were giving away units to celebrities. The same applies for the GameCube, DS, PS2 and original Xbox.

  • Thanks Kamalot. I was having the same concerns myself. If the XBox 360 production quantities amounted to a debacle last year, I think disaster may be the word of record for Sony this year. I would think with all of Sony's missteps this year, the PS3 launch is the one thing they absolutely HAVE to get right. Not exactly inspiring confidence.

Curious to see what kind of presence they have at DigitalLife next week. Both their keynote (HD - Fusion of Electronics and Entertainment) and their booth had better feature a real, usable PS3.

  • There might not be any working PS3's in retail stores but PSM3 just got their hands on one just yesterday and oh yea TGS.

  • yeah, look at the Wii, nerdlingers all over the world have played with it already and it's on the same release schedule. Either Sony is trying to be mysterious or they're huge douches.

Either way, early game reviews always sells more games. I CAN'T WAIT for metroid.

  • i'm not sure whether I should break out the climbing gear or bow down to it.

I like the idea of the PS3, but consequently, I think it's going to tank. I sue that work 'tank' sparringly though. I don't think it will be a tank in the sense that it will be a total financial black whole and spell doom for the playstation franchise, but rather in comparison to what's out there, the PS3 is the Audiobahn of the console world...nice to look at, nice features, waaaayyy too out of my reasonable price range.

I can imagine the look on parent's faces when they see PS3 on their child's wishlist. Their wallets are going to be singing the blues. Another thing is that the war between console and PC gamers is going to escalate considering the price and sun par graphics in comparison to current gen computers.

But on the other hand, I dont wanna spend 10 grand on a athlon fx quad SLI gaming rig.

good luck, sony. You're going to need it if you're trying to aviod the path of betamax.

  • I wonder how those Bravias would hold up to a FUBAR demolition tool?

  • i honestly think sony is being mysterious about their release schedule. maybe they are trying a different release strategy like Microsoft did with the xbox 360. not sure how its going to go over though.

who needs early reviews for MGS4 anyway?

  • I might be a little late with the comment but has anyone told vandezuma that it is now late 2006 and not early 2005 when the font was first known?

Get your head out of your a$$.

    and

Davidfbecker....the size of the PS3 is 325 by 274. The size of average everyday a/v media components (recievers, amplifier etc) is, 430 x 302.

So A. The PS3 is smaller than the average AV component and B. you must have REALLY small kids.

  • Hey Sony, compensate much?

  • I was unaware that the power supply for the PS3 was internal. Apparently I either browsed over that one or just didn't come across it. I must have had this image in mind when I said that. I forgot how small Kutaragi really is, so in comparison that PS3 he's holding looks pretty big.

  • I cant wait to see this kiosk, Im waiting to see a ps3 game in 1080p resolution before I buy.
