Pink, meet blue. Blue, meet pink. Just 3 LEDs change the color of this entire kitchen We like it more than painting, and the "coat" will last 4,000 days before burnout.

What was wrong with the honey wood color? Kitchen's should not be blue. But if you entertain a lot, the color-changing mood-lighting is very nice.
So this "eco-fabulous" kitchen constantly uses energy to give it color?
>sigh<
Have the Yuppies of the wretched 80's returned?
uhhh....only works at night? or in Antarctica for half the year
Stooges - I'd be willing to bet you waste more energy in a couple of hours than it would take to have these LEDs on for 24 hours. If you would have read the article you'd have seen the 36w total for all the LEDs.
You wouldn't have to have them on for 24 though... If we ever get that voice recognition thing down or some other convenient means of turning off the lights when nobody's home we could have em on only for the 8 hours or so we are awake... Hell I'm only in my kitchen for about 2 hours a day...
I like the concept. I want it. Let me just say I want it for the tech effect not because its eco-friendly in any way!
Great!! Not a day goes by without me wondering how I can't make my house look more like a set from Miami Vice. I'm breaking out the white suit coats baby.
People are still unaware of the low wattage of LEDs? For god's sake, we'd might as well just flood our damn cities and cut the power now.
@ Senator: It really is okay to be eco-friendly now, so go WILD and support increased efficiency. Tech and energy savings don't have to be mutually exclusive.
They have a great way of turning these on and off, called a switch. usually located on a wall somewhere, sometimes in an inconvenient spot, like, right next to your front door. And something tells me that these will be in more than just the kitchen. It would be like a porn studio in every room.
LEDs are truly low-watt. 'nuff said.
What about at day time? Will you still be able to see the blue color?
So what happens when it is sunny outside, and the sunlight washes out the LEDs?
People don't realize the tremendous difference that creative lighting can make. You can change the look and feel of an entire decor by the lighting design.
Here in NYC there are lighting designers who work with your interior decorator to design light pallettes to suit your apartment. A few people in my building have done it, and it looks fantastic.
I didn't really look at the treehugger article that carefully, but it seems that if you stood in front of your cupboards, you'd also look blue. Not attractive. Unless you WANT to be a smurf.
uh that's great and all if it's dark and no other lights are on.
This simply would not work during the day at all, not to mention that if you wanted to watch a movie in your living room you would have a colorful glow surrounding you.
I have the Ambient Orb (http://www.ambientdevices.com/cat/orb/orborder.html) and its great and all and you can even see it during the day for the most part, but at night it is pretty blinding if you are walking into the living room from a dead sleep to pee. Imagine your entire wall, BLINDING THE HELL OUT OF YOU.
I think its pretty cool though, and would be fun, but it doesn't take the place of paint.
ALSO, if you ever have a chance to visit Philly and like sushi check out the restaurant called 'Pod.' They have these rooms you can get for large parties that change color every 2 minutes or so. I didn't dine in one, but I watched as patrons experienced the color changes.
At times I could see that the diners were not happy with certain colors... ie, PINK.

Mmr, if you're going into the living room to take a whiz, you might want to move that orb somewhere else...
You wouldn't want to use this while cooking though.
"Hey, does this meat still look pink to you"
On the other hand, I'm already a bit colorblind, so you probably don't want me judging the doneness of meat by sight anyway.
Hey, bitfactory, don't look now but if you paint the walls you'll use NO ENERGY to color your world. Zero energy consumption is more desireable than 36 watts when it comes to energy conservation. My third-grader knows that! If you want to see how ridiculous this is, take your 36 watts and multiply it by a million or so freaks who will actually install this. Now we are talking serious waste! One million times 36 watts equals, well, I'm sure I've lost you by now so happy new year!
i figgard we posed to git rid ah Led Paint
Paint is usually a pretty toxic chemical, so applying less is probably a good thing.
However, paint that disappears when I turn on the list seems like a joke for rich idiots. (Because I'll be damned if I'm cooking anything in a kitchen that dark.)
Oooh, we're so glad that our Kitchen Confidential feature on StyleWillSaveUs.com has inspired such a debate! May we just point out that LED lighting is used in addition to eco-friendly paint to create a groovier ambience for parties etc. It doesn't have to be either / or!

... and Happy New Year to you Stooges! Don't worry, I won't send anyone to audit your energy waste (besides the obvious energy waste of arguing about something as inconsequential as LED kitchen lights). And I agree with Zadaz to a point. How much energy did it take to create the paint - including the chems involved?
You're on the wrong site if you have a problem with a certain amount of energy consumption. :)
Let's make 07 the year that 'your third-grader' doesn't roll their eyes behind your back for being a hippie! Yeah 07!
So let me get this straight, if I use colored light instead of white, I can make my white kitchen that color. OMFG. Why didn't I see this on CNN's main page? :)
i can see some practical applications for this: illuminating the area around the stove red while cooking for example, but really this just looks too weird for me to care about.
it's like some really cheezy version on an 80's future.
I like modern hippies.. They smell better than the real thing. Plus, I don't see what's wrong with being eco-minded if it looks this great. Tech is getting more and more green every passing year.
