Last week brought news that Apple is planning to launch its highly anticipated (by some, anyway) iTunes Movie Store very soon, perhaps even at the invite-only secret meeting on September 12, and now we have a list of movies likely to make their way to Jobs' online store. There are Disney movies as far as the eye can see, which isn't surprising given Jobs' presence on the board of directors over at the Magic Kingdom. For a full list (so far, anyway), hit the jump.
So, what movies will you be able to download for $9.99 or $14.99 if it's considered "new"?
From Walt Disney Pictures: James and the Giant Peach, Pocahontas, The Lion King, Aladdin, Chicken Little, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Sky High, Ice Princess, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. From Disney/Pixar: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3 (?), A Bug's Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars.
From Miramax: Cold Mountain, The Hours, Chicago, Cinderella Man, Scary Movie 1,2,3 and 4.
From Touchstone Pictures: The Royal Tenenbaums, Pearl Harbor, The Sixth Sense (with Hollywood Pictures), Unbreakable, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Shanghai Noon, Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, King Arthur, Hidalgo, Open Range, Signs, Reign of Fire.
Apart from Disney and Pixar, Lion's Gate Entertainment will make the following, mostly horror, movies available: American Psycho, Dogma, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Open Water, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, The Punisher, Fahrenheit 9/11, Crash, Alone in the Dark, Hostel, Saw 1 and 2
Toy Story 3 is the only really interesting film on the list, given that we didn't even know it was coming out. Other than that, enjoy your generous helping of good old fashioned Disney movie magic and second-rate horror films. Does anybody really want to see Deuce Bigalow on an iPod in the near future? Looks fairly banal and formulaic to me ($1 to Michael Caine).

I find it interesting that many places say "why would I want to watch it on my iPod". The reality is that I watch shows that I download on my TV(by way of my iPod). If any of the rumors have any bite to their bark, we may get to stream to our sets. Sure, you'll have the crabs that say it "ain't high def". I don't know that will matter to the millions that have downloaded TV content already. I do know that if Apple makes it... it will work and it will be easy to use. That's good enough for me.
Since when does four out of 14 movies equal mostly? Perhaps you were trying to say 'mostly horrible'?
Advice: Rent these movies and spend 50 on popcorn 2 and get them for much cheaper! Unless of course if that is illegal. I'm not sure...
Brilliant. Oh wait, I forgot that Apple isn't supposed to make money, but rather pander to the hippest of the hip, forgoing profits and mass appeal for coolness, all so it's products can become a source of cult flicks and indy films. Disney is a brilliant move sure to gain further recognition andbuy-in from parents (even 8 year olds are begging for an iPod of their own). If it's successful, Jobs will add a wider range of films. If it flops, then he has lost very little. Other than social credit with with people who spend 18 hours a day in front on a computer, of course.

Let's not be too hard on them, it's their first swing, and there are a handful of solid movies in that list apart from the animated stuff.
I knew about Toy Story 3. You should check topics other than gizmos when you are out gathering news. :)
Toy Story 3 has been off-and-on for two years now. First they were going to do it without Pixar, then that was scrapped. And at the most recent Comic-Con, Tim Allen said it was back on, and that he and Tom Hanks would be doing the voices.
But does this mean it'll be straight-to-video? And if it's a release title, doesn't that mean it's pretty much completed by now? I'm so confused!
$9.99 a movie? For that price, they better allow you to keep a record online and re-download it if you lose your copy.
So this is about parents downloading movies for the kids to watch in the car on a road trip. I guess we should expect some sort of video device that fits this description on the 12th then.
Fahrenheit 9/11 - a horror movie if I ever saw one.
I'm afraid that the movie studios will cripple any success that Apple would have with this. The price is pretty much guaranteed to be too high for the type of early adopters who this would appeal to. But here's hoping that I'm wrong!
Watching movies on your iPod seems like a waste of time - until you spend three hours at the airport waiting for your flight or (worse) are subjected to the airlines' paltry choices en route. Of course, you could always read a book or listen to music (your iPod's original purpose), but it's nice to have the option.
