... this is one damn awesome commercial. Apparently Bravia TV's show some pretty nice colors, and because it is damn near impossible to accurately advertise TVs on TV, why not show the colors with 70,000 liters of paint erupting around some buildings in Glasgow, Scotland? This commercial is fo' reals—no fancy CGI here. Don't believe me? Hit the jump to see a couple "Making of" videos.
The cleanup took five day and 60 people. The entire shoot took 10 days altogether with the help of 250 people.

and the clown has what to do with any of this.
Cool while it's going off. Like so many things in life, it'll all turn brown when it dries.
I first thought that said exploding pants, and saw the screen freeze of the clown, and clicked.
While cool, a clown wearing exploding pants would be cooler.
When people walked into their aparments comming home from vacation, they would be pissed.
Very cool, I could see they were going fo the "V for Vendetta" theme. But instead of fireworks, they use paint!
neat commercial, but will it save sony this year?
wow, could the headline be any more stupid? the point of the commercial is totally obvious.
rather than crappy youtube quality, go to the bottom link (Product Page) and see a nice quicktime.
This video makes me so happy to not be blind.
This commercial is chock full of win.
"environmentally friendly paint" eh? how much water was used to clean up said paint?
Chances are they used the same paint in paintballs. a soap/gelatin mix.
As there are no CGI effects that IS amazingly good. I'm assuming those tower blocks are/were disused/due for repair.
Now, if those are the methods used for doing them up, I'd fancy a go at urban regeneration. In the meantime, I'm off to paint the town red...
Good as it is, I betcha it looks about 5 bajillion times better in HD. (So kudos to effective advertising).
Greatest commercial ever. I'm buying a Bravia tomorrow as long as they don't have batteries.
Very original commercial. Finally, I get some dividend from my Sony stocks.
@AlisdairC No CGI effects? first of all you can see that on the roof of the building only half is used for the fountain explosions. They filled those up with CGI of course...
And if you can't see the obvious CGI used for most of the ground-fountains (they probably used some real ones and cloned them into different colors), well i just don't want to know what your reaction was to jurassic park...
club662, I'm just going by what Travis says in his piece. Shucks, must be too gullible. Next thing you'll be telling me Superman can't really fly...
I saw the pics of the aftermath in the Glasgow Evening Times, but this is the first time I've laid eyes on the finished product - very well done. The blocks were indeed intended for flattening, like so many in the area. These ones just got to have a brief flash of fame before getting trashed.
Oh, and Paradise - you're forgetting this was filmed in Scotland, where water tends to just fall out of the sky in a phenomenon known as 'rain'!
"TerryinSt.Paul says:

I live in Buffalo NY. Right about now I'd take one that ran on batteries
Bravia released an ad a year or two ago as well
with millions of bouncy balls in SF, it looked like complete CG, but alas it wasn't, so i'll tend to believe them on this one.
for the old video
http://www.bravia-advert.com/balls/
hmmm... "rain"... I'll have to go check that out on Wikipedia...
Actually, I very much doubt there was any CGI used here. My parents (who live in Glasgow) were kind enough to send me some videos they made of this thing being filmed. Looks remarkably like the finished product (minus the music and amazing composition).
And the paint was scraped off, not washed off, during the cleanup (more details of this on the Bravia-Advert website).
I agree - download the HD version of the video from the Bravia-Advert site, it's well worth it.
that comerical was awesome and to think i would have missed it if not for the giz, I love my Tivo
Um, on the behind the scenes / making of on the site, they explain how they did it. No CGI...just tons of paint and a lot of hard work.
how does one scrape paint off a tree?
From the video:
"Mommy, did you see that?"
The off-camera response:
"No, son. Remember when you splashed your Coke in my face? The acid has eaten away my retinas."
I bet that commercial would look amazing on my Samsung HDTV.
It looks like there wasn't anything computer generated, but there was some computer modification. The big, blue, plastic paint cans that made up the aerial bombs were deleted, and the red fountains on top of the building were touched up a bit. Overall, it looks great though. I'll have to read from the site just how "environmentally friendly" it was.
Now we just have to wait for this to be on the DIY websites. I can see how this would be a 'safe' daytime version of the 4th here in the states. Just get the kids in some ratty clothes, set it up in a field and blast away.
I can also see how some artsy person could layout a huge canvas under this and sell it to an individual, as long as they don't stick their elbow through it though ;)
Okay, seriously. That was just freakin' awesome. CGI or no, I don't give a rat's ass. That just flat-out rocked.
That commercial filled my soul with rainbows. It made me happier than the opening video of Katamari Damacy.
club662: The fountains on top of the building were only on two sides because from the angle of the camera used in the final cut, you can only see those two sides.
It's as simple as that.
wow, just wow, that was an awesome job. Technically very well done, and sure does get the point across, I am still amazed at the fact there was no CGI in that. That rocked, good job Scottish people!
Wheres the Better Get Macco Ad or Macco sponsor in all this?
I have to hand it to sony for providing countless visually orgasmic commercials. My alltime favorite being the incredibly well shot "Bouncy Ball" one, but this tops it.
Now i just wish they would show the unpainted clown run from behind the building all painted up and perfect...
As long as he doesnt destroy mankind like all other television clowns.
wicked
makes me want to go out and buy one right now.
adverts speak to me :)
(pity i'm skint thought)
Yeh,can i just point something out...being someone who works in the same commercials department that made this commercial....ther was a hell of alot of fluid dynamics going on here...so YES alot of CGI! but of course there was alot of real footage too. Glad you all like it..
I believe some paint companies didn't have the budget to pay for such ad, so Sony took it up.
You're missing a significant point, though, in taht people who live in that sort of housing would not be able to afford such TVs.
You can download a 720P version of this commercial at Bravia-Advert.com.
Oh come on, color guru! Everyone loves a clown! They make everything so happy!
That clown looks like the clown from "IT"!
My groin hurts after this for some reason.
