How-To Dump Blu-ray Movies On Your PS3

ps3dump.jpegWe know how much you love reading about the PlayStation 3 and potentially illegal things, so let's combine the two, shall we? It looks like enterprising hackers have figured out a way to dump Blu-ray movies using nothing more than a PS3 and Linux. Now, there's a whole lot of Linux jargon to comb through, but the premise is simple: boot up the appropriate flavor of Linux, then input the command "dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/blu-raymovie.iso" and that should do it. It's interesting to note that similar methods are used to dump ("back up") PS3 games themselves.

The first movie dumped was Talledega Night and it comes in at an impressive 20.9GB. So if you bought a PS3 with the 60GB hard drive you should be all set; those with a 20GB will need to invest in an external hard drive. Don't tell Sony we told you or anything.

  • That's just makes my new 500 GB SATA HD an even better buy :)

  • @nodnarb84

Is its a notebook drive that fits in the ps3 or external?

if its a notebook drive and/or fits inside the ps3 what brand is it and where did you get it?

  • How easy is it to copy the video files off of the PS3 to a regular PC for conversion to Xvid?

  • Now that Kamalot - is the question of the Day?

you took the words right out my mouth.

  • So this allows for the file to be copied. But is it still encrypted? I find it hard to believe it would be this easy to bypass the new encryption, but hey it is Sony.

  • I don't know for sure, but I imagine it would be difficult to use the .iso on anything other than the ps3 until blu-ray drives become popular enough on PC's that someone develops a way to read the .iso and convert it to your favorite codec

  • I don't know exactly how it all works, but I know that VLC (VideoLan.org) can play iso images of DVD's -- I do that all the time, since apparently I'm willing to spend the time to use DVD Shrink, but too lazy to burn the iso. I'd imagine that one day it could brute-force it's way through a blu-ray iso too...

On another note: the article said "[Talladega Nights] comes in at an impressive 20.9GB. So if you bought a PS3 with the 60GB hard drive you should be all set..."

Indeed...all set to dump 2 movies! Woo! ;)

  • Okay, you've got a bit-for-bit copy of the disc on your harddrive. Now what? Not to get snarky, but let me know when somebody figures out how to play the movie.

  • Damn right! :-D

    Does it play at least?

errrr >.> We need a burner on this, HACK AWAY MY FRIENDS! find a way to burn and play!!!! :D

  • Apparently people don't realize this... but dumping a disc isn't exactly the important part -- in the case of blu-ray movies, the dumped iso still has all the drm stuff to get through (and will lack the bd-rom watermark if reburned, making it useless for all the players out now). In the case of games, you need a boot loader (if playing off hdd), as if burned it'll still be missing the watermarking of a bd-rom. It'll be news when someone gets a burned disc to be read like a rom disc (or the ripped data usably read from an hdd).

Not the biggest news really at this point. As dumping stuff is the easy part (especially with linux having access to the bd drive). To be honest, I hope nothing comes of it -- piracy, while convenient at times, isn't such a fantastic thing.

  • wasnt there a bypass awhile back with the print screen key?

  • wasnt there a bypass of some sort awhile back with the PrintScreen key?

  • I don't know why the movie's size of 20 gigs is impressive. I can make a 20 gig MPEG2 video quite easily.

Since when was the size of a video file impressive?

    8-O

  • Did managed copy ever get set as mandatory for blue ray? I know it did for HD DVD. So theoretically this should be totally legal on a 360... if it's enabled. Might even be a legit on the PS3 if the disk approves it.

  • Come on people, this simply isn't news or the least bit interesting. You can stick a Blu-ray disc in your PC (assuming you have a Blu-ray drive) and copy it as well, just as you can stick a DVD in any computer and copy all the files. The encryption isn't in reading the disc, it's in decrypting the files themselves and in looking for the watermark on the disc.

  • anyone who has software to get iso of PS3 blue ray disc and a soft to dump this iso to HDD and it can runs well in HDD? please post here 4 every body enjoys

  • hi there

  • ok ok, it seems this digital age is moving toward having your info stored and being able to stream it anywhere, soon the 700mhz bid will pay off and we can get video anywhere we need once they build that stuff out for verizon. most of these blogs just have people post half the answer since they only half the research on what they are talking about. and i will not comment until i do more research on this.
