The first TV ad for the PS3—"The Wait"—is now floating around that damnable Internet and we've really got to hand it to Sony: not only does the ad not tell us a single thing about their upcoming system, but they've somehow managed to create an ad that evokes the same type of feeling you get when you watch the "Daisy" ad and a "say no to drugs" commercial. Bravo. At least there's no melting clocks this time around.
First North American PlayStation 3 Commercial: "The Wait" [Kotaku]

I like it, it has an appropriate sense of forboding for a company who like to put spontaneous combusting, rootkit spreading, overpriced gorgeousness in your home.
slithly cool, but not cool enough for ps3 advertising.
That song is from 28 Days Later. I was waiting for some zombies to eat that kid. Oh well.
I swear I've heard that background music before - is it Sigur Ros?
Did you see the mom in the kitchen? She's either A) gonna not be able to pay rent/the car bill/electric bill/groceries at all for 2 weeks and/or insufficiently for an entire month, B) backhand her child and all of his friends on those roofs for being a bad influence, or C) backhand her child and all of his friends on those roofs for being a bad influence and then buy ALL of them Wii's (and then have some change to spare after buying a couple games and a handful of wiimotes/nunchakus).
Notice I never once mentioned "PS3"... just like the ad. DUM DUM DUM. Hell... that could have been a 360 commercial and the kid just missed the "60" float by.
i hate tv ads where you cant even tell what the hell is going on until the very end. During the whole thing i was like what the hell does this have to do with the PS3?
Not bad, but doesn't Truth in Advertising Act mandate they show those kids line up in front of Best Buy in wee hours of the morning (the day before)?
The song is Brian Eno. It has been used in a few movies I think. Its called Ascent (An Ending).
hard to believe that i can get so bored within only one minute. ok, i admit i did cheat: i actually had a break circa 20 sec., before watching the rest. but i made it.
Waaaaaaaait ... so that whole ad exists to show us that the PS3 controller will be shaped like ... a 3?
I'm not going to buy a $600 bat-a-rang, thank you very much.
like that kids got fuckin' $600.
Looks like the child abuse adverts that air in the UK. Or the Cancer research ads where one of the parent are dead. I half expected the kid to jump off the roof at the end.
That advert makes it seem like the PS3 is a Nuke. (Daisy ad, I know.) I hope that no one is going to call it Da Bomb. Oh God! Why did I? Crap!
That's what the backpack is for. Either that or the kid is planning to camp outside his local Gamestop on launch day... too bad every PS3 available at launch was preordered last week.
Sadly for Sony, those kids are waiting on their rooftop for the imminent arrival of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
It would have been more realistic if you saw the kid stuffing his bag with money to be able to buy the damn thing.
And for us europeans the wait is just beginning thankyouverymuchsony...
Playstation 3: It's like jumping off the roof.
bah - you guys have it wrong. If you look at the artistic aspect of this piece (of crap), it represents 11.16.06, the last day these kids will ever see the outside again.
reminds me of the stop child abuse adverts here in UK.... I swear the music is used on the NSPCC adverts here in the UK
So, wait, am I supposed to feel sorry for those kids or something? It's almost like the ad says, "look, these kids are bored and have nothing to do. Please hold a bake sale for them so they can afford a PS3. Oh, yeah, by the way, this is an ad for the PS3...in case you didn't know."
I'll be sticking to my DOW: Dark Crusade and the rest of my PC games for quite some time thank you very much.
Here in the UK, that music was used in a fairly successful TV campaign for NSPC, the National Society for the Protection of Children. What with there being a kid in the ad, I was expecting that low, poignant half-scottish accent to ring in any moment
"His parents say he fell and hit his head - on a wall, on a fist, on a PS3?"
What's up with the "Spider-Man" font? That makes the ad a bit confusing since "Spider-Man 3" is coming out soon. Those kids could be up on their roofs waiting for Spider-Man to show up on November 17.
That would actually make more sense since Spider-Man is more likely to show up on your roof than a brand new Playstation 3.
Sony needs to change their name to Sowhat.
Great, the wait is finally over, the wait until all the PS3's sell out in 9.2 seconds. Seriously, they should have their add say, "PS3, the wait is finally here" Have fun going to buy on of these babies, because you will have to wait in a decent sized line probably just to be told, "Sorry we are out, but sony should ship us some next quarter."
Sadly - it looks like those kids are going to be waiting on the roof for a long time. May be they'll see Santa. They're likely to see the Easter Bunny before there is enough supply to get to the average kid (even if he does have $600).
if 13 year olds had 600 bucks, I would rob a couple of them a day.
Yes we all know Nintendo has been a gaming power house in the past couple of years. I dont know why people go on system bashing rants. Every intelligent person knows that what makes the system great is the software written for it.
I suppose showing gameplay video of launch titles for a upcoming console is just soooo last century. I would have hit 'commerical skip' on my PVR after 5 seconds and never have known what this commercial was about. (The XB360 "Jump In" skip rope commericial was just as bad).
Show me some games, a brand is not enough to sell $400-$600 of consumer electronics.
On the bright side, at least the commercial shows the PS3 to scale.
Needs more cowbell.
I swear, I thought this was a commercial for the next Batman movie when I saw the 3 (looked like a bat) until it said Playstation 3 at the end, because I saw the commercial off of YouTube a few days ago with a foreign title.
This is just a representation of everyone who's getting a PS3 on launch day.
its a commercial that shows that all the lower income families who live in that city can never hope to afford a ps3 and can only look tot he sky and dream.
way to rub it in their face, sony!
THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
wow. What a shitty commercial.
I live in Edmonton (Canada), and I saw this ad in a movie theatre just over two weeks ago.
I have to admit, I had no idea what the ad was about until the final seconds of it. I kept thinking it was for Kids Help Phone, and that the spoiled little bastard was running away from home or something.
It's a bird, it's a plane... nevermind it's just Sony again with their really huge dirigible of a console, not unlike the Hindenberg.
Of course, we can at least rest assured that it won't burst into flames, well the console at least. The controllers, well... that's another story.
The song is by Brian Eno, it's been used in a boatload of movies (like Traffic and 28 Days Later), but it was written for the movie "For All Mankind," which is a documentary about the Apollo moon landings. He released the work as an album titled "Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks" which has the songs from the film plus a few more he wrote that weren't used.
It's actually called "An Ending (Ascent)" and not the other way around.
I like the ad.
WTF is with sony?
Why do they have 2 torment us with these commercials? I really think that sony and microsoft are competing with each other with "who can make the customer crazy first?".
....Nintendo help us!!!
you guys, read into the commercial bros. all the kids set out to do something, to come together. think what their hinting at.
their online service and the console will bring many kids together. and its going to keep them that way a while, hence why they took backpacks, its going to be a long, and fun, adventure.
and im talking about the console. not the wait to buy it. stop bashing them and read into all these ads...ps3 and sony will destroy the wii, and the 360. the same way the gamecube is getting smoked and the xbox got smoked and the 360 is getting smoked. Playstation 3. its a name. its going to have great games. its going to have many fun filled features. 3rd party support. x number of possibilities. they dont depend on zelda, metroid prime, mario, and halo to get themselves by.
remember that.
(im buying a WII just for zelda, same way i bought my GC just for zelda, and i got treated to a celshaded zelda game, when i shoulda just waited for TLP. i love zelda :))
