Monopoly Replaces Cash With Debit Card

monopolyvisa.jpgBy replacing the cash in Monopoly with a Visa debit card in all future editions of Monopoly, Hasbro puts an end to almost a century of "Monopoly money" jokes and wasted minutes waiting for your sister to dole out $50 because she's the chairman of the board. Instead of divvying up paper 500, 100s and 50s, you'll stick your card into the ATM machine in order to add or subtract from your total. The only problem: knowing how much money everyone else has without some kind of visual indicator.

  • In 3 months, someone's going to find out a way so you can purchase real things with that card. |337 debit haxxors FTW.

  • really neat idea, but unless its also in the traditional version of the game I aint buying it.

There is no way in hell Hasbro will get me to buy the new version of the game that ditched Atlantic City streets for cities.

  • I predict massive Monopoly cheating amongst nerds.

  • read the article, its in that Here and Now edition so that sealed it for me, neat idea but unless its AC it aint monopoly.

  • Soo are they planning a Monopoly Here & Now Electronic Banking version for the US?? My guess is yes, but I haven't seen anything about it yet, just across the pond.

  • Where does it say anything about "all future editions"?

  • How much is VISA paying for this?

  • I noticed that too, TV Genius. Isn't that nice, a paid advertisement inside of your board game. I'll stick to the paper money, thank you very much.

  • OK.....I am sorry I have done this already so I'll keep this one short. ATM = Automatic Teller Machine. "ATM machine" = stupid.

  • Bad Gizmodo.. BAD!
The article makes no mention of "all versions from now on" and in fact only refers to the "Here and Now" edition, and states there is still the classic (which costs Half as much) and still has the paper money...

and yeah VISA has their name right on it. They designed the reader for Parker Brothers...
Personally I think it is stupid.
-You can't see how much money they have
-Harder to stop cheating (and accidental typos (oops I hit +2000 instead of +200))
-and lastly Great now a classic board game need BATTERIES...

  • Have any of you ever actually played a game of Monopoly to the end? It takes forever. Usually we just stop when the bank runs out of cash, but I guess that won't happen now.

  • Could be worse. At least its a debit card and not a credit card. Then you'd be seeing a lot of backlash.

And Doc - its not rocket science to design and build up card swipes and magnetic cards. Any number of small companies could have done this. Make no mistake - what you are seeing here is an ad for Visa. They probably gave the stupid things to PB in exchange for that logo in the corner. They've pulled this crap before with kids toys, its not new.

  • good thing the thing has come up with the new innovation..evryone is actually v bored wid the ancient usual game..and iv even bought the same fucin game thrice just for tht i lose all my cash after a year or two...dis time its gonna b permanent
