We crashed Microsoft's New York Zune party last night and got some extra hands-on time with the soon-to-be-released player. We've already given you our in depth review, but were curious to see just how long it'd take to send music from one Zune to another. Gawker videographer Richard Blakeley filmed the exchange which took under 30 seconds from start to finish using Art Brut's "Emily Kane" as our music guinea pig (the song is a 2.41-minute track). Still curious before you buy? We also got a video of the player's complete interface coming up for ya.

Looks like the actual time of transferring the file from hitting "Accept" till the file is on the other Zune is about 10 seconds.
does anyone know if the Zune will have an accessory that support USB 2 photo file transfers? This is something that is completely annoying about the iPod. The only acessories that support photo transfers use USB 1 which pretty much useless with today's photo file sizes.
exactly seemed more like 10 seconds for the song ...
I was wondering does it let you send an "album" ?
I wonder how long it would take to send 'You Suffer' by.... whoever. It's the world's shortest song but I can't find an mp3 of it anywhere.
@ phantam
Yeah, I've read you can send your entire collection
that's not bad at all. it seems everyone was making a big deal about the trasfer time, but I could live with a 10 second load time. It's not gonna kill me.
Anyone know the screens color count?
Honestly, I can't see myself ever wanting to do this. But connecting to the Zune marketplace from the toilet is another matter.
I think it's cool. I know I want to buy one but I keep waivering on whether I should wait for the second gen. and then I see something like this that makes me want it now. I guess I may have found my 30th birthday present. Either that or a day at the spa. :-D
What audio quality file was this? Did you try with unprotected audio files to see if the 3days/3times drm engraved itself over?
forget the spa ... get the zune
What song is playing in the background of that video?
"You suffer but why" by Napalm Death. A classic and also an ideal tune for funerals / weddings.
As for the transfer time... surely it's the file size that's the important detail rather than song length. As in a 2 minute 41 second song encoded at 64kbps will be way smaller than one at 360kbps.
What song is playing in the background at the party?
Whoa, that was surprisingly quick.
10 seconds to transfer is actually pretty neat...
Too bad it can be heard only thrice...
And - a zune to own is anyday better than a day at the spa... Go for it!
You guys!!! Aaaaaah!!! You're making it soooo hard. :-D Hell, I throw down some cash for the Zune already. It's just that I wanna 60 or even an 80 when they come out. Dammit. Decisions decisions decisions.
Steve Jobs thinks the average Zune user can't hold a girl's attention for 10 seconds. Huh.
10 seconds, huh. That almost makes me want one, but I'll wait until someone breaks that annoying DRM on the listening limitation.
Cool. Faster transfers == more zunes to spam in a given time period. Audio and photo spam here we come!
I do hope Zune gets traction. The marketing opportunities are endless!
probably only a 96 kbps file. lets see how fast it transfers stairway at 256 kpbs or lossless.
Ah much faster than copying a mp3 from an ipod or another mp3 player back to your PC, and then thru itunes to your ipod...and only 10 seconds? Amazing.
You just filmed Zune-2-Zune transfer only in a party?
Didn't the party have any girls so we could see how it fits them ? (Especially when they are not really dressed ;) )

FROST1- too bad it only lasts 3 plays. Not the same thing.
Seriously. 3 plays in 3 days? What's the point? Fork over a buck and buy the damn thing yourself. Such a gimmick.
FROST1 -
too bad you can't actually go from an ipod to any computer through itunes. you have to use something else.
i think it would be nice to listen to something without the hastle of going through a computer. if i like it, i'd buy it. i don't see the problem with it.
WORF -
it's hard to spam when you turn off the wifi. i'd only turn it on when i know a friend is sending something to me or vice versa.
keep up the pouting, and mabee m$ will give us a firmware upgrade that fixes this idiocracy
That's just freaking SWEET... O.O
That's so tight. :)
I didn't know they had Wi-Fi/bluetooth?
O__O
I'm DEFINITELY going to get one, now... O__O
Ok, so zune2zune works. It's not like this was unexpected.
Call me an Apple fanboy if you like, but I still think the iPod is better, even missing the wifi feature.
And hey, eventually, when Apple decides a wireless feature is called for, they'll actually do the job right. That is, let you connect directly to the iTunes Store and purchase OTA. And if they really get it right, it will also have bluetooth in it for both headphones and connection to a mobile in case you're out of wifi range (downloading over EDGE, EVDO or HSDPA wouldn't exactly be painful).
This time Microsoft got there first with a feature. Nice job Bill. While I'm no an of DRM, FairPlay's got anything WMA beat 9 ways to Sunday.
I'm expecting to see a new touchscreen iPod before too long anyhow, particularly after that leak last week...
kool but... this would be so sweet if it allowed you to text msg too for free....
How exactly is the music sent? its not through a cable.. is it over the internet somehow? or what im a bit confused.. cause it showed so many peoples zune online....
Why doesn't it tell you the song you're being sent. I can see this would be useful when you want to sneakily send people a song or pimp your own band on the subway or whatever.
wait so you can send someone a song but they only get to listen to it three times before what they have to get it themselfs I don't get how that is cool in any way shape or form
floobtronics,
Ipods suck cheese and so does any mac product for all I care and a fyi bill doesn't work for MS anymore geez
