Retro Space Arcade Cabinet Mixes Retro, Futurism with Banana Color Scheme

The classic arcade cabinet of yesterdecade gets a snazzy makeover in the Retro Space machine from designer Martijn Koch. It's a tribute in part to "honor the design of the first ever arcade cabinet" which was Computer Space, from 1971. So it's got arcade-quality controls for two people, including the ever-important trackball (good news for Missile Command fans) and squeezes in 100+ games and a suite of emulators. More »

Retro-Future Poster Punches Retro-Futurism In the Face

As seen on boingboing: this retro-futuristic poster combines everything we knew about the year 2000 back in the 1950s with everything we know about the year 2000 right now. Essential equipment for the "nerd room" in any gadget/tech/science fiction fan's house. $15 and ships August 15. [Topatoco via Boing Boing]

Retromodo: 'Sun Lamp Held In Hand Brands Babies'

Modern Mechanix found this 1938 issue of Popular Science with a really, really fun baby branding gadget designed to make sure hospital mixups were a thing of the past. Did it work? Oh, I'm sure it did. Did it eliminate hospital baby mixups? No, because somebody somewhere along the line though it was a bad idea. We say bring this back! I don't want to raise some dirty stranger's baby for five years before I discover that he or she is not mine. [Modern Mechanix via Medgadget]

Blu-ray Coffee Table, Pac-Man Tabletop For Grown-ups

When tabletop arcade manufacturer Retro-Tech makes a coffee table, it's gotta do more than hold books on Famous Chateaus of the 18th Century and What Things Look Like From the Sky. It has to hold that stuff and piss off your home theater. More »

Giz Readers Love Rocking the Old Tech in Our Retro-Fantastic Gallery

Last week, I asked you to send me in photos of the oldest gear you still use on at least a semi-regular basis. It got a great response, and I really loved going through the entries. In the gallery below you'll find everything from 70+ year old radios to still-in-use LaserDisc and BetaMax players, clearly loved for many years by their proud owners. Clearly, not everything here is still in use (you still playing Ghostbusters II on your Tandy all that often?), but the nostalgia value alone makes a lot of these worth including. Walk with me, friends, down memory lane.

Street Art is Better with Pixels

This awesome street art was spotted here in NYC in the East Village, and I love it. Pixelart beats sloppy, illegible tagging any day of the week, thank you very much. Unfortunately, some jackass didn't agree. At least we have a picture of it in its original state. [Gothamist]

The Hottest Video Game Tech of the Mid-'90s, Harnessed in Delphi's Driving Sim

I just checked out a rad driving simulator at the Delphi booth. It totally made me feel like I was behind the wheel, as you can see in the video. To be fair, they were showing off some pretty interesting tech, such as sensors that could tell if you were looking straight ahead or off to the side so it could warn you that you were getting too close to the car ahead of you, and the graphics were secondary. But I just couldn't get over the graphics.

'Antique' Gadget Sellers Market Features Amazingly Rare Tech

Some of the coolest stuff in Akihabara wasn't the newest or flashiest, but the oldest. Take this market we discovered up a set of back stairs near the train station. It's full of clear boxes that sellers can rent out. They then price their goods, stick them in, and wait for the buyers to come. It's loaded with pristine old electronics, from the first Walkman models ever released to old cameras and 8mm projectors to old Game Boy games. It's like a museum of old technology, and it's the kind of place you can get lost in for a long, long time.

Atari "Punk" Console Stuffed in a Rotary Phone

Is no gadget sacred anymore? Here we have an old school Ericsson rotary telephone stripped of its innards which were subsequently replaced with a home-built Atari 'punk' console. Did we need a new way to present the Pong box? Hit the jump for the DIY schematic on the console itself. More »

iHome's Table Radio Gives Your iPod a Retro Look

The folks at iHome went retro with their new iPod stereo. The iH10 is essentially their take on the Table Radio with a built-in iPod dock, AM/FM tuners, and a line-in jack on the backside. Inside the wooden cabinet you'll find a 3.5-inch speaker, which at $49 probably won't fill a room like one of these, but would still make a nice companion to your bff. The iH10 comes out this summer. Phonograph Concept Treats Your CDs Like Vinyl

Designed by Yong Jieyu, the Phonograph CD Player has the looks of an old-school record player, but plays CDs instead. It's essentially a gutted CD player with a laser pointer that doubles as a tone arm. I'm a pretty big vinyl fan, and while something like this wouldn't get me to ditch my records, it'd at least get me interested in my old CD collection. More »

Japanese Retro Analog Wrist Watch

The Showa Retro Heisi Pop Analog Watch would be great if you were alive in Japan from 1926 to 1989. Then you'd appreciate the fact that in order to extract the time from this watch, you have to dial 117 on the rotary face. Once you do that, a robotic woman will announce the time to you—probably in Japanese. More »

Space Invaders Alarm Clock—Bew Bew!

Mornings can be a rough time for some people. I blame the traditional alarm clocks with their silly radios or annoying beeping. The Space Invaders alarm clock could cure my case of the mornings by awakening to the pleasant sounds of space invaders. It is available for $34, but looks like it will have to be imported to the states. More »

Retro USB Radio Confuses People Who Think It's a Mic

Live from Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip—was I the only one that watched that show this week? In any case, this USB Retro Radio is a radio and not a microphone, despite being shaped like a microphone. Blows your mind, we're sure, but this thing receives AM and FM, and stands 202mm tall (7.9 inches), and is powered via USB. More »

Giant Anglepoise Lamp, For Big Desks or Scaring Old People

The Anglepoise lamp is one of the coolest and most innovative lamps ever, and to celebrate its 70th birthday the company has designed a Giant Anglepoise Lamp that is three times the traditional size. Look at it, it just freaking awesome. Imagine having one in your living room, oh the ladies would swoon. Unfortunately this lamp starts at £1,234 ($2,300) for the white and cream version, and the black version runs £1,660 ($3,100). What's the deal with companies making the black models more expensive? I really want a black MacBook but I'll be damned if I have to pay a couple hundred dollars more for it. More »

Brevetatto Bambino Carriage: Retro 50's Look for the Well-Heeled

Your kid will be wondering what year it is when you stroll him around in this Giordani Brevetatto Bambino Carriage, a vintage Italian conveyance from the 1950s. It's in its original condition, yours for $2220. Go ahead, that baby's worth it. More »

Fred-o-Vision Retro TV Alarm Clock

This alarm clock will be either cool as hell, or annoying—I haven't decided yet. It is housed in a retro-style television and will play back old game show themes and sounds to awake you in the mornings. It displays color changing text patterns that would easily get annoying while trying to sleep. Luckily it includes a remote control for turning off the display among other things. I've always wanted to wake up to "No Whammy! No Whammy! No Whammy! STOP!" More »

Genus Type-R Vintage DAB Radio

I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for vintage. I put wood paneling on everything I own to give it that classic 1970s and 1980s look. That is why this Type-R DAB radio is tickling me pink. Even though DAB is non-existent here in the states, it is still a pretty radio. It is an average DAB radio, but the outside has classic anodized aluminum and walnut wood-panel ends. The red backlit panel and carrying handle/stand is the cherry on top of this melted retro sundae. It should be available later this fall—over the pond—for 150 or approximately 268 U.S. buckaroos.
