Open X Package Openers Now Cheaper, Still Great

ani_struggle.gifani_slide.gifani_tape2.gif
These awesome Open X package cutters we wrote about two years ago has a pretty steep price drop. No longer $10, it's now $4.95, and even come with free shipping if you buy 6. Never rip the inside of your mouth opening a package like an idiot again.

We're not sure why you'd buy 6 now that Christmas season is over, but these would probably make the BEST VALENTINES DAY GIFT EVER.

And if you believed that, we wish you good luck getting inside that box ever again.

They should package those in thick sealed plastic containers, just so you appreciate 'em that much more.

No, they'd do that just to mindfuck you. Remember kids, psychological warfare is best left to the professionals.

  • Well, I bough 4 of these suckers all at once because they seemed like such a great idea. None of them were sharp enough to cut through heavy plastic. Also, the push out "starter cutter" that comes out of the bottom of the handle is easy to cut yourself with.

Perhaps they've improved their quality control since then but they were a complete waste of money for me. I still wind up using EMT sheers or sharp spring handled sheers.

  • @Munch420s: Don't know if they still do, but they used to do exactly that.

  • alternatively, you can buy a box cutter type knife from home depot for 39 cents and it does the same thing. that's what i use to open the thick sealed plastic containers.

  • The Pyranna (www.pyranna.com) looks like a better design.

  • i use a sledge hammer but i return alot of damaged merchandise lol

  • I think they've been $4.95 for a while now.. I bought one back in May of last year for $4.95... It worked great, but the "starter" blade or whatever got me a few times when I tried it out on some smaller things, Other than that, once you get the opening goin it cuts pretty good.

do you remember what product were you trying to open?

those 360 packages are a poopsicle to open and i'd be giddy if this could do the trick. a wary consumer be i but 4.95 might be good enough for me to just jump in (i swear to your god that pun was unintentional) though.

  • I bought six of them last spring and LOVE them. I'm down to just one because I keep giving them away. The only problem I've ever had was at Christmas, I was moving too fast and the sharp plastic edge from the package itself cut me across the knuckle. As for the the two blades, the starter blade is just meant to give you half an inch to get the other one in there. And you have to find the right angle once you get the other blade going. But now that I got the hang of it, I can't live without the dang things.

  • I have one, and it's the best $5 I ever spent. I'd pay $10 + shipping for one. The starter blade has gotten stuck finally after hundreds of uses. Big deal.

  • The video showing how easy it is to use this contraption....can't be real right? It looks to me like they pre-cut the package and then just used the blade to retrace the pre-cut edge to make it look effortless. I doubt very much that ANYTHING can cut those thick motherfu#$ers with so little effort.

  • I've had one since 1971. It's called a utility knife. Has disposable blades, just like my razor.

  • I bought myself a pocketknife (on the recommendations of a friend). Unfold it, poke through the packaging, and slide. Remarkable how easily they are to open now! And since you can keep the handle away from the packaging, you can avoid shredding your hand on the cut bits while you shred that plastic.

  • I'm intrigued. I also don't like the thought of slicing open my arms, hands, and legs while opening up such packages with a utility knife. The amount of pressure needed to slice through the plastic gives me a premonition that I'm about to visit an emergency room.

Also, it's a lot easier to convince a clerk to accept a return if the package isn't destroyed in the process of opening it.

  • Impossible to use if left-handed. How about one for this 10% minority?

  • I ordered one of these about 6 months ago and I was disappointed. The blades didn't seem sharp enough on it which makes it more difficult to use than a pair of scissors.
