Some of you may already know this, but I spent 2 days this week at Nintendo of America headquarters playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Nintendo Wii.
I'd tried the system out at E3, but was only testing demos for a few minutes at a time. About 9 hours of actual playing taught me a lot more about the controls. I was surprised by details like the Wiimote not sensing the "thrust" of a sword, but impressed by the possibly perfect ergonomics of the controller.
If you haven't yet, I urge you to check out my post over on Kotaku. It specifically only covers my experience with one game, but should give you a better idea of what the Wii gameplay is really like. If you have any questions about the hardware after the read, that's what comments are for.
Hands-On, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess [kotaku]

Thrust sensing would open up a whole new video gaming experience for some...

OH YEAH!! *pelvic thrust*
Great review on Zelda...although a goofy embargo when the company lets you talk about the first four hours but not what sounds like the *best* four hours! Can't wait for "part 2!"
It can sense it but only if programmers wanna use something like that in a game. It can do most 3d movements, it's sensitive enough to allow writing with it.
seriously, the best game for this is going to be Red Steel, who doesnt want to kill people with a sword, and actually feel like your doing it, but not feel it when you get hit!!! The Wii is gonna rock assesss
I can kind of understand why you can't thrust unless another button is pressed. I'll attempt to explain but please don't shoot me if i make no sense!
When you hold a sword, dagger etc. you hold it close to you with your arm bent. When you attack with a sword you thrust it and cut across a person(stick it out and move it in simple terms). I think it would be difficult to distinguish between a thrust and a swipe because many people have different techniques. Using another button as well as thrusting makes 100% sure that you are thrusting.
Please don't shoot me if i made no sense! I tried my best.
Well, I was kind of expecting 1 to 1 controls for the sword play. I mean watching this Live Move video makes it seem like a first grader could do this. I'm sure the game will be a blast but this news is a little disappointing for sure.

I have a wii little question: I own a 1st gen GC with 480p output and the component cable. Is the video port the same for the Wii and the GC?
I have a problem. I need a new gaming console in 2007 and i already own a PS, PS2, PSP a Gameboy DS. COuld anyone help me between chosing the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii
BillDoE: Not completely certain, but given recent discussions on the limited availability of component cables, I think not.
Bill: that video is a great find. It re-inspires me about the [Revolution]. If developing interactions with the controller is that easy, I have high-hopes for the games.
Honestly the review of Zelda doesn't rev me up -- the game sounds okay and the controls sound mediocre. But my sense is that for the first few months most reviews are going to focus on the controls and focus on the negative until reviewers become more familiar with the controls and start being able to compare cross-platform titles. We're all so familiar with the dual-analog, 8 button, 4 shoulder button configuration that the new Nintendo controller is going to take some adjustment. The real mark of the [Revolution] will come when when non-gamers get their hands on the controller; if they get it and it's intuitive, this console will be a success.
That's why I'm going to wait until post-Xmas to get mine - I want to see how the reviews pan out, and see what improvements come down the road. And I want a green one.
This is a Wii question I've had for a while. Like a year ago, Nintendo said that you could play the wii over a comp screen. Is that still on?
