Full Mac OSX Running on Apple TV

This guy claims to be running Apple's OSX on Apple TV. And from the looks of this video, he most certainly is. While I'm approaching the situation with an open mind, it had better not be a stupid April Fools' prank.

Because here at Gizmodo we have a ton of real news to cover. Scroll down throughout the day for updates.

  • Unless he's using some sort of adapter, I don't believe those Dell monitors have HDMI.

But does it run Linux man??

  • Who the hell cares? Go get a Mac Mini and you'll have Firewire, DVD, more USB ports, Bluetooth, and more memory than 256MB.

This is a solution in search of a problem. Useless.

  • "While I'm approaching the situation with an open mind, it had better not be a stupid April Fools' prank."

The whole mac idea is an april's fool on itself already, so basically one is cancelling the other, go for it, drool!!!

  • I heard that if you open up apple tv and put cat poo in it it will run sooper dooper.

  • Insert random "Mac Suxxors" comment...

I'm definitely pro-PC, but if this is true, that makes this the cheapest Apple computer ever produced. Mac-heads rejoice! (Just be sure you start saving up for that overpriced cinema display today!)

Wow! You can run an Apple operating system on Apple hardware? That is crazy, man! Maybe they will do a video showing Windows Vista running on Dell hardware next?

  • Big deal. I got OSX to run on my son's Leapster and even on my daughter's Lite-Bright. My next mod will be to get the Big Wheel tricked out to run OSX.

  • Does this mean AAPL has sold its last Mac Mini? $800 v. ($250 and a pirated disk image)? Heck, replace 256mbyte dimm with a gbyte dimm for another $80 and run rings around the entry-level mini (w/ its 512mbytes).

And somebody will figure out how to dual boot shortly and then users can get two for the price of one!

Steve Jobs, philanthropist. (who'da guessed? :-)

    The real test would be is to install Windows Vista Ultimate using bootcamp 1.2. =0}

  • The only thing that catches my eye specifically is that the guy is using a Dell 2405FPW 24" monitor, and thats the same monitor I have, and it does not have a HDMI port. So I don't get that.

The footprint of the next 24" Dell monitor that is the successor to the 2405FPW is the 2407WFP and the footprint is entirely different. And that doesn't have HDMI either.

  • ...or maybe this guy just plugged a mac into that monitor and had someone power it on at the same time.

  • I believe that feat has already been accomplished Yoshi if I can recall correctly. As for the AppleTV running OSX, well its just a simple idea for the tinkerers out there. No real purpose if you already have a Mac but I must give him props for trying and succeeding.

  • Yikes. Looks like the dram is soldered to the board (so modding memory will be a challenge). So maybe Steve isn't being as generous as Bill (yet). Though msword for the mac (2004 version) says it is supported on 256mbytes machines.

  • I dunno why everyone's all salty balls on this thing, it has hardware h.264, yah the feature set is a little underwhelming, but personally i'd much prefer this next to my tv to a full on comp... what do i need with a dvd drive... i have one of those... what do i need with lots of usb... 1 does the job... if you don't like it that's fine, i just think it's cool what people are modding it to do, and i look forward to even more cool things to come, because i will probably be buying on in the near future. if you don't like it, that's cool, i just don't see why you gotta go all sour grapes on the rest of us, just go buy your $179 120gb harddrive upgrades for your jet engines, and stop complaining

  • Call me when they get Media Center running on that thing with cablecard.

  • Call me when the macmini has an HDMI port. kthxbye.

  • Im scared at which posts are actually legit and which ones are april fools jokes :P!...
maybe I should just not go outside today...

    today is a lie

  • Ummm....scaught...yeah ummm...the mini does have HDMI, via a DVI to HDMI cable...works great...kurwelcomebye.

  • I call fud! Suuuure he shows you "a" video cable, but he never shows you it connecting to "that" Dell LCD...

  • @Makito,

I thought that too, at first. I have the same Dell monitor as the guy in the video. And it DOES NOT have an HDMI port on the monitor. But if you look closely he has a box next to/under the monitor that converts HDMI to VGA. See the black box with the VGA cable coming out of it?

This guy ain't BSing at all. This is real. He should have mentioned the HDMI-to-VGA converter box, since most people know that the Dell 2005/2405FPW displays don't have HDMI. But its pretty clear that he is using the converter box.

  • Possibly he took a screencast of his mac and uploaded it to his AppleTV?

  • He lost me at 'dot.' "10 dot 4 dot 8"? Who says that?

  • this is a really awsome mod for those of us who dont have a Mac and would like a small mac for a cheap price. its like a low end/cheap desktop replacement ( and i would add a tiny desktop too )

  • I dont with the apple tv you can change the ram. But it does have a better video card then mac mini. This would make a nice system for basic internet browsing on your tv, and media player.
    Thanks

  • It's absolutely real. I'm the guy in the video. Actually, that video box X2VGA2 isn't hooked up...it's just general clutter around my desk. I bought a normal HDMI to DVI cable to connect to the Dell. I guess maybe I should do a video where I hook up the cable....but I'm kind of lazy about re-arranging my office just to shoot a video. There's more about it on my blog, but I'm not sure if it's OK to put a link in the comments, so I won't for now.
