Rejoice, diabetics! No, you still can't have any delicious donuts, but you can more closely monitor your glucose levels without the need for finger pricks. Digital Angel (the company name sounds like a myspace username or something) was awarded a patent for their embedded bio-sensor system.
The system works by implanting a glucose-sensing RFID microchip into the patient. The chip can more accurately measure glucose levels and report it back to a digital scanner that also powers the device. Digital Angel just received their patent this week, so expect it to still be years before this product is actually available, until then—keep on prickin'. Thanks, Anthony

I love the "no you cant still have any delicious donuts..."
What the hell is that a picture of? Gollum picketing? Anyone?
I hope that no diabetic lesbians reading this 'blog get confused as to which pricks they are elimninating.
They received FDA approval for their basic implantable chip a couple years back, maybe it won't take as long for trials on this one.
Just hope the "Drug Free & Proud" HR-types don't get any big ideas...it's bad enough having to pee in a cup at random intervals.
Just out of interest, how common is this stuff in the states? I heard there's other companies offering it now.
Back many years ago one of them came here to New Zealand to do medical trails, which I was part of. It wasn't working very well back then, but I'm sure they've fixed it all up by now.
Personally I can't wait. They can warn you if you're going to go low or high, it'd be amazing. Then one day in the future, why not combine it with some insilun pumping device.
The molecular biologist in my lab is diabetic and has an implanted insulin pump. It used to crack me up how she'd crank up the insulin whenever someone brought doughnuts or ice cream to work.
