Digital breathalyzers aren't new by any means, but with the biggest drinking holiday merely a week away (New Years, dummies) it is important to remind anyone that plans on consuming this coming week to carry around one of these handy devices. This isn't one of those cheap one-time-use breathalyzers that you can pick up at the gas station—this is the real deal. The Alcohawk is an ABI professional grade breathalyzer. Giver it a little blow and find out if you should be handing the keys off tonight. Stay safe, kiddos.

Good Rule of Thumb: If there is enough doubt about your sobriety to need to carry one of these around with you, it is time to find a local A.A. meeting.
After having a close call with a traffic stop, I decided to get myself a personal breathalyzer. I ordered the Breathkey breathalyzer though amazon.com on the Dec 17th(a Sunday) and it was at my door three days later. So far I've been very pleased. With all breathalyzers, you have to wait 20 minutes after your last drink before testing. Otherwise the alcohol in your mouth will affect the results. In addition all breathalyzers require you to blow for at least 4 seconds so that they get a sample from the bottom of your lungs.
The nice thing about the BreathKey is that it uses a fuel cell to read your blood alcohol centration(BAC), instead of a semiconductor that needs to be warmed up. This means it's also less likely to get fouled, or polluted and need to go in for servicing. Also, the BreathKey is small, and works as a key chain. I've only been using it for a little while, but so far it seems to give accurate results.

So it's suitable for use by professional grade drinkers?
If you guys provide a bottle of Pub Club Rum, I'll send you a DVD of me testing this item. I'm sure we can get one from Kingofmars cheap.
Now why would i invest $120 when all i have to do is blow in my dogs face she'll let me know if i'm drunk she'll start baying!
This is a quality unit.
It has held up to many a long night at the bar with friends getting passed around simply to inform us which one of us was truely the most F***ed up!!!! The battery life tends to get cut pretty short though when used/abused this extensivley, so keep an exra set handy.
For $120, I could buy enough alcohol to get totally faced and still have cab fare home. I say if you're already wondering if you've had too much, it's probably much safer to just take a cab or get one of your less drunken buddies to drive you home...
Ah, but how often do you have to recalibrate it? These things do need calibration from time to time...
Which is why the roadside unit, which are calibrated, is still only "pass/fail" and can't be used in court. They are used as a quick check to see if the field sobriety test should be given, or if a person should just be brought in to use the real desktop unit (with calibration tags, records, receipts, etc).
