Go Canada: iPhone Confirmed on Rogers Wireless

mrrogers.jpgiPhone confirmed for Canada, by a customer service email.

Rogers is actively working with Apple to launch the iPhone in Canada as soon as possible and will be the exclusive provider of the iPhone in Canada.
Availability and pricing aren't set in stone, yet. But you can bet your buttocks it'll be after we get ours in the USA. Go USA! Thanks Curtis!

  • Everyone knows here that Rogers carrier sucks!

iPhone in canada : mid 2008 (probably the 2nd gen)
Cost : a lot more than in US (the Rogers way!).

  • Thats a sad picture.

  • NicleT:

Hopefully the iPhone will go "the Apple way" and be much cheaper in Canada than in the US. If you compare 2GB Nano prices around the world, Canada's prices are some of the lowest!

  • sure the prices arent just higher in canada because canadian dollars have less value?

  • iPhone eh!

  • The reason why Canadian prices are higher:

The CAD used to be down to .65 vs. the US Dollar so prices were adjusted for value. When the dollar went up very quickly over the last two years and plateued at .9 on the USD lots of companies noticed they weren't seeing any backlash at not adjusting the prices.

As long as Canadians remain willing to pay the premium companies will keep charging that premium.

  • well i would rather the iphone be on rogers than on bell, fido or "hey we are still using 80's technology" telus.

  • Rogers! Oh no! How could Apple seriously think of using them. They suck. PSYCHE.

The iPhone sucks because it's using Rogers/Cingular/is only 8G/isn't 3G in the first version/doesn't sync to office/doesn't double as a hockey puck/won't run on Labatt Blue.

Is there anything they can announce about the iPhone that won't trigger a chorus of "that sucks" from the knee-jerk-anti-crowd?

    It's cool. Get over it.

  • Rogers is probably the best carrier in Canada (from my experience in Toronto, at least).

Plus, it was going to go to either Bell or Rogers. Fido and Telus didn't stand a chance, neither did Virgin Mobile.

  • Bell is on a CDMA network, there is no possible way the iPhone was going to end up with them.

  • Yeah Bell and Telus are actually the same (CDMA) network, and Rogers and Fido are actually the same (GSM) network, and the same company. So of the one CDMA network and the one GSM network, I think it rather unsurprising who is getting the iPhone...

  • They all friggin' suck.

I was hoping that Apple would be carrying the iPhone themselves on their new Canadian GSM network due to go live in early 2008. Not that it would be great but another choice would float my boat.

  • For those who are stuck under contract, and still want an iPhone - don't worry, Cellswapper Candada is launching real soon. :)

  • Meh..not like any of us Canucks can afford the data plans that the iPhone would require. At $100 for 200mb of transfer, I don't see many people using it to its full potential.

  • This is not about Exchange Rates!

I don't want to be pessimist but 1) you must buy a 2-3 years plan with any Rogers' SmartPhone. 2) DATA plan, 100 $CAN / month for only 200Mb, also must be purchased. 3) Plus all sides services "à la carte" needed to run the iPhone... No, that's not cheap even in Canadian Dollar.

Besides, Rogers have one of the most worst costumers service ever!

And, Hoffen: since Fido belongs to Rogers, it became a poor carrier.

Sadly I'm afraid that Rogers will offer the iPhone the Rogers' way.

  • We can always hope the iPhone goes the way of Fido. They did have a hiptop with an unlimited data package and it wasn't $100/mth (I think it was $20/mth)... but I'm sure we won't be that lucky!

  • This is a clue that in the near future that it will come to verizon since regers and verizon are both owned by vodaphone, hopefully it does come and look cool, or else I dont want it, I'd rather still have a nice LG or motorola phone that is a slider or a flip phone. Flip phones and sliders are for cool people...bar phones with big touch screen..apple is just asking for finger prints all over the place, just look at the thing at cnet, it's finger printed ALL OVER the screen....touch screens shouldnt be toucable, unless they have pens...apple didnt make it with a pen..lazy peice of fruit, atleast some pocket smartphones out there come with pens. The ones that are more PDA'ish.

  • Rogers is NOT owned by Vodafone... 56% is Rogers Communications, 34% is AT&T. This section of AT&T is NOT owned by Vodafone, unlike the section that was sold in the creation of Verizon. SO your comment is invalid. If anything, Rogers is getting it because of its connection to AT&T (Cingular)

  • I hate all cell phone carriers. So I guess I don't care what company gets the iphone.

  • Please, ragging on cell phone companies is like ragging on insurance companies or complaining about waiting in emergency rooms. You may have a valid point, but you sound like a whiny little girl when you do it.

  • Damn. With rogers on it, it means expensive EDGE service.

I'm apparently on the grandfathered "Unlimited GPRS" package on Fido ("unlimited" means 1GB - which is probably more than is achievable on GPRS anyhow).

Rogers data plans go up to 200MB or so - thus being completely useless as it's $100 for that service (versus $50 for mine). Sure I don't use 200MB in GPRS, but that's not the point... half the features of the iPhone require it! (And usage scales with bandwidth, as we all know).

Data is just too damn expensive here in Canada - and Fido stopped offering unlimited data shortly after Rogers acquird them. Unfortunately, Fido SIMs do NOT work in locked Rogers phones.

Of course, a 2008 release may mean 3G service, since Rogers is apparently rolling out UMTS and HSDPA service. But it'll be $ARM and $LEG in cost, if not also $FIRSTBORN.

  • This is a clue that in the near future that it will come to verizon since regers and verizon are both owned by vodaphone
not happening. vodafone and verizon co-operate a CDMA network in the US for verizon wireless, and as of yet, the only plans for a CDMA iPhone are in (you guessed it) japan, where the phones are already so advanced that apple's going to actually have to move their ass to compete. rogers, on the other hand, is a GSM network, and the first-gen iPhone is GSM-only as of now.

besides, do you really want verizon to get the iPhone? do you want your iPhone to constantly display messages like "ERROR: bluetooth object push profile disabled. cannot send file." and "V CAST Music does not support iPhone, please use a windows media® capable phone."

  • I don't think they can use the name iPhone in Canada. That trademark is held by another company in Canada who's been selling internet phone service for many years no. Good luck Apple!

  • What's wrong with all of you? Remember, if the data plans will be too expensive with the Iphone, you don't have to buy the damn thing and stick to a regular cell phone, the kind that was design to have vocal conversation. And maybe the cell phone carriers will eventually offer more attractive plans.

  • "iPhone confirmed for Canada, by a customer service email."

Rogers has not yet confirmed this fact in any news release or official statement. As per the customer service email, no Rogers customer (or Rogers reps) on any of the major cell phone discussion boards has seen this email.

The only thing that Rogers has said in any official statements is that they feel that they would be an obvious choice for this phone. Although, Fido (owned by Rogers) would also have a network that could handle the iPhone..

  • hi evry one

  • One more thing. In the forums at www.iphonecanada.net a poster suggested a company in Canada called "comwave" has the rights to the name "iphone" - at least in Canada. This could be a little snag??

  • This is real and its in Canada now. You can get a software crack for 99 cents on ebay. You can also use referral advertisements to obtain your free iPhone by being sneaky.
Advertising companies pay a lot of money for click throughs and pay even more with promotions and offers they can just right-off later. The best scam to get a free iPhone is sign up, refer 8 people to sign up for a free trial, then cancel before you pay. So no one pays and you get a free iPhone. Sign up here and try it! [www.YourFreeiPhone.com]

  • Two things have been holding up the iPhone release in Canada:
    1. The iPhone trademark is currently owned by Comwave, a national
VoIP provider in Canada that markets a VoIP product called iPhone.
    2. Rogers greedy data plans which, compared to AT&T's iPhone plan
would cost $1000 more due to the amount of data required when using
the iPhone (ie. visual voicemail, sending/receiving email and
    attachments, etc)

Considering both points however, it's reasonable to assume that
Rogers, Apple and Comwave have all had a reasonable amount of time to
address these challenges. This means that we could hear news about
the iPhone release in Canada during Steve Jobs' Keynote at this
month's 2008 Macworld Conference and Expo.
