Cingular Treo 750 in the Wild

Boy genius as a shot of the upcoming Cingular Treo 750, a Windows Mobile 5-powered smartphone from Palm. The phone looks just about the same as the European version, and is making the rounds with Cingular support teams—probably where BG got this shot.

Unfortunately, it seems like the Cingular version of the phone is quite far from release thanks to various stability problems. As much as we like Windows Mobile, we know there are stability issues, especially getting it to work with different devices. We didn't lose all the data on our miniSD card once just to not gripe about it.

  • A windows based treo for cingular. I knew Palm wouldn't let me down. Now I'm just gonna pray its wifi compatible.

  • Why pray when it's simple to read the reviews of the 750v -- the model is out on vodaphone in Europe. has been for a couple weeks. Some folks have already bought them, unlocked 'em, and run them on Cingular.

    No wifi I believe

Can someone explain why wifi is such a big deal? I've had a 650 for a couple years and I'm rarely in free wifi spots except when I'm at home. I get more use out of the $20/mo unlimited data on Cingular than I would from wifi on the phone.

  • I just wish WinMob supported the 700p's 320x320 screen. It's a shame that such an advanced PDA has to have a smaller screen than most smartphones.

  • WiFi is big deal because carriers are afraid people will install skype and make free calls. Most carriers will not allow WiFi devices. Tmobile might since they have broad wifi network. Trio can be expanded with wifi card.

  • It's probable that screen size is being kept smaller because Windows version needs more juice than Palm OS version. Tradeoff between batery life and screen size is difficult one but I think Palm has made a good choice. I'll deal with smaller screen but not with 2hr talk time max.
