Acoustic Research's WiFi Remote Stuffed With Features

If there's one device that needs some features raped into it, its the remote control. Acoustic Research showed the ARRU449 universal remote at CEDIA today in all its Wi-Fi goodness. Available in October, the gadget's built-in Wi-Fi technology allows you to use your connection to get the latest weather reports, sports scores, headlines and what's playing on your favorite channels right to the color LCD display on your remote control — which, by the way, now has a color LCD display. Third Gen Toshiba HD DVD Players Coming October 1

Toshiba's second generation HD DVD players have only been out for a little more than half a year, but third generation players are already on their way. Set to launch October 1, the HD-A3, HD-A30 and HD-A35 players will retail for $299, $399 and $499 respectively. The cheaper HD-A3 will only have 720p and 1080i, whereas the top two will reach all the way up to 1080p. We'll post updates when Toshiba officially unveils these players at CEDIA next month. Panasonic gave us a sneak peek at its PT-AX100U 720p LCD home theater projector it will be introducing at the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) Expo starting tomorrow in Denver. It looks like you get a lot of projector for your $2999, with its 220-watt lamp cranking out 2000 lumens of brightness. It also has an HDMI input and a Dynamic Iris that's able to adjust itself 60 times per second, giving its images a claimed 6000:1 contrast ratio. More »

NuVision 52LEDLP vs. Samsung HL-S5679W: A Pitched Battle Between Big High Def LED-Backlit TVs

The Nuvision 52LEDLP is the latest set from the relatively new, high end TV maker. While the rest of their lineup is comprised of LCDs, this is their first rear projection DLP, which they plan to announce formally at CEDIA in a few weeks. The set's screen is 52-inches diagonally, with a native resolution of 1080p—that's 1920 by 1080 pixels, and what we love to see from a TV of this size. What's remarkable is that its backlighting isn't done with the usual bulb and colorwheel. No, instead, it uses a red, green, and blue LED as a lightsource, which has the great advantages of eliminating the rainbow effect a traditional setup, along with a claimed 140% of HDTV's color palette. (Most LCDS only reach the 90th percentile.) The other thing that's crazy is just how similar this TV is to the Samsung HL-S5679W, which comes out the same time. We smell a fight! More »

CEDIA News: iPods Head Home

At CEDIA, iPod control was everywhere, Crestron, Niles, Monitor Audio, Oxmoor, Denon, Harman-Kardon, Pioneer, B&K, Russound and Onkyo/Integra all had integration. I find a flaw in the pursuit of home iPodding on massively expensive systems, since those that have the money really ought to have media servers that can deliver music to their iPods instead of using the iPod to play music to the whole house. Sure, iPods can play Apple's lossless files and uncompressed audio, but will owners know how to pick the good stuff? Store high-res files at home, take compressed with you... More »
