Magellan Announces Seven New GPS Units

magellan-4200.jpg Like some sort of GPS-delivering Santa, Magellan has announced the upcoming release of seven new GPS units—all set to be available between September and October. In the 4200 series, the Maestro 4250—retailing for $500—offers integrated live traffic updates, a shiny, widescreen 4.3-inch display and Bluetooth capability, while the 4220 and 4200 models will cost slightly less but will lack features like the live traffic updates and voice control. First LG VX10000 Shot Shows New enV

vx10knotstretched.jpg
A shot of the new LG VX10000 was recently posted in the forums, revealing what could be the successor to Verizon's enV branded phone. Other than a slightly sleeker design and what appears to be a larger screen, not much information is known. There is no word yet on pricing or availability.

Moto Rokr E8 Has Backlit Nubs For Keys

These first shots of the Motorola Rokr E8 from zol.com.cn shows the unique keypad that Moto went with. Instead of regular keys, they've got little nubs that need to be back-illuminated. When you're dialing, all the keys are lit; but when you're playing music, the numbers are dimmed and only the music controls are bright. This could be even greater if the keys' backlit images could change in the background, but it doesn't seem like the E8 is advanced enough to do that. [Zol.com via IDNES via Phonearena]

Sizemodo and Sound Check: New Bose SoundDock Portable vs. Original SoundDock (Verdict: New One Bigger, Rocks Harder)

SoundDock_Faceoff.jpg The most startling thing about the new Bose SoundDock Portable is that it's bigger than its forebear (though thankfully not heavier). The least startling thing about it is that it sounds better than the original. More »

Sharp's Multitouch New LCD Panel Can Go Up to 12 Inches (I Smell an Apple Multitouch Tablet)

Those manufacturers of multitouch devices of the high visual quality and resilience of the iPhone's might have another option from Sharp. According to Impress, the LCD veterans have made a 3.5 inch, 480 x 320 screen, capable of multitouch. These can be made up to 12 inches in diagonal size. Perfect for a portable. Somehow, sites are reporting that this thing can SCAN, too. Strange, and unconfirmed, at least by me.

Hardware Unlock Explodes iPhone

Here's a tip. If you're not really skilled at hardware hacks, don't try to hardware unlock your iPhone. If you accidentally touch the wrong thing or screw up, this will happen. More »

The Lobster is One Modular Crustacean

While many of the wrist/arm based multimedia devices are improving, none of them can hold a candle to Danillo Mangini's Lobster. This oddly named prototype involves an LCD base unit about the size of an iPod Shuffle (or presumably a lobster tail) that straps on to your arm or wrist, but what sets the Lobster apart is its modular ability. Google_Search_BMW_478.jpeg FROM JALOPNIK—BMW is the first car manufacturer to offer Google local search straight from the in-dash navigation system. This supplements their "send to car" from PC to GPS setup. Oh, Germany only, for the time being. More at Jalop. [Jalopnik]

Apple Balks at $5-Per-Show Demand, Gives NBC the Boot From iTunes

We reported earlier that NBC had decided not to renew its contract with Apple to sell their shows online. We thought that they might do something similar to Universal and do a short-term contract to keep their content up. No dice. Apparently, NBC wanted Apple to start charging a whopping $4.99 per episode for their shows, causing Apple to give them an early booting from iTunes. Look, 30 Rock is hilarious and everything, but if you think a season of it in DRM'd digital form at a mediocre resolution is worth $100 you've got another thing coming. More »

HD DVD Press Conference, In Fast Forward

IMG_3962.JPG

After yesterday's Blu-ray press conference, Toshiba fired back...over the course of two very, very long hours. And by "fired back," we really mean gave a bunch of presentations that were too long. So we're giving you a fast forward version of the conference...that still feels a bit like slow-mo, but here is the meat of it: Running through Toshiba's game plan, Fujii went through the 3-pronged strategy of HDD, HD DVD and SD in Toshiba's multimedia approach. He also mentioned, "I'm sure withing three years the price of 32GB of flash memory will be the range of $100 dollars," and that optical discs would be around in, "30, 40, even 100 years."

Sprint, Verizon 6700 Get Unofficial WM6 Updates

wm66700.png A forum member on PPCGeeks patched up a version of Windows Mobile 6—complete with HTC's fancy home screen on the HTC Touch—for the aging Sprint and Verizon 6700 phones. It's not compatible with the 6800 (the Sprint Mogul, which already has WM6), so don't install it there. But if you want to get some extra life out of your old phone, here ya go. Since it's user-made, there are no guarantees that it won't brick your phone, however. [PPCGeeks]

First 360 View of the 300FPS Mystery Casio Exilim,

We just stopped by Casio's booth to get our eyes on the new Exilim we told you about earlier today. Shooting a drool-worthy 60fps bursts and 300fps of VGA video, it's a beefy camera—definitely heftier than my Rebel XTi (from what we could see through the glass). More »

Halo 3 Accessories, Messenger Kit Coming September 4

controller360.jpg

Those Xbox 360 Halo 3 accessories are all coming next week, and with it comes the Xbox 360 Messenger kit. The accessories are two controllers, one Master Chief and one Covenant Brute, and a limited edition Master Chief figurine by McFarlane toys. The Messenger Kit is that QWERTY keyboard add-on that lets you type without hooking up a USB keyboard. There's also a Halo 3 wireless headset, which is just the same as the old headset bot Halo'ed up—which probably means the quality is still going to be as bad. The accessories will be $59, and the kit will be $29.

A Rocket That'll Take Pictures Along Its Voyage For You

If you've always wanted to see the view from a skyward rocket, but lack the physical and mental prowess to be an astronaut, there are ways to get a really crappy approximation of the experience. One is by launching one of these Estes Astrovision Digital Video Rockets. It's got a camera in the tip that can take either a 12-second clip with a resolution of 640×480 or three still pictures. It's just like going into orbit, but if you didn't quite make it and had glaucoma. It'll be available in September for $60. [Product Page via Oh Gizmo!]
