We're still months away from the official launch, but the iPhone is already drawing various comparisons to other mobile phones. In this video we see the iPhone's interface being compared to Windows Mobile. For the most part, both phones can perform the same tasks. The Windows phone actually beats it out with a few extra features like a built-in radio, but where the iPhone wins, I think, is in integration. Without being a fanboy, its UI seems a lot smoother and more intuitive than Windows Mobile. What do you guys think?

what i think is you need to start compairing it with a pocket pc and not a smarttphone... the pocket pc has a touch screen and that adds alot more software and features.
I think it's fairly similar to Mac vs PC comparisons in general... the PC is a bit clumsier and not as pretty as the Mac, but can also be configured to your liking more and has more apps available.
My prediction:
If you like to tinker and tweak and don't mind some bugs, Windows Mobile's for you. If you like clean, easy to use interfaces and don't mind losing control of some things than in July get an iPho... err actually, just go to T-Mobile today and get a Sidekick 3.
With the Windows Mobil you didn't always get to see the steps necessary to get to, say, the weather. I think that if you measure how intuitive it is to access some of that stuff PLUS how clunky the interface is, you'll see that the iPhone probably wins. Jobs is notorious for driving developers crazy with his constant push for a sleeker, simpler interface.
Also, we surely haven't seen all that there is to see on the iPhone. I'm sure there will be a few more surprises at its official roll out. Also, this is iPhone version 1. Consider the huge difference between the first gen iPod and the 5th gen.
ok posted that before i saw the clip. finally a review using the proper system. pocketpc. thanx!
Doing comparison like these is like comparing apple and oranges. There is no comparison. Its comparing the latest technology against an older generation tech.
A fairer comparison will come when the iphone is released and compared to the next generation of windows mobile devices when they are released.
i want "wetter" on my phone!
Gizmodo you mac mac fanboy's you! When are you going to stop kissing steve jobs ass and running comparisons of microsoft and apple when they obviously don't compete with each other in any field. Why don't we just start comparing see's candy (apple) to super computers (microsoft).... that's what we will be doing. I know i've never used the iphone but it has to suck, because I have used windows mobile and it is awesome.
Sounds like the typical fanboy mantra - More intuitive interface. ;^) I think the interface looks prettier but without software developers being able to easily develop applications I just don't see it. I think that anyone who loves Macintosh will LOVE the iPhone. ;^) For the price I'll just separate devices.
Treo 680 = FREE with contract.
lol. So right about the SK Keebler! I had/have a SK2. I loved the thing to death (when I had reception) but it was too confining. There is no way you could get me to switch from my Pearl currently though.
None of these comparisons matter. Until the iPhone is released and can be compared hands-on, anthing can change.
Besides, I can make a video of me "using" a 386 to surf the web and make it look fast and smooth. Comparing hands-on to Jobs presenting the interface isn't exactly scientific.
Right now, I couldn't make a decision as to which is better. I am used to Windows Mobile therefore it seems intuitive and easy. But I think I may be pleasantly surprised when I finally get some hands-on time with the iPhone. Apple tends to do that to people.
What is that app on the Windows phone where the person is looking at Wikipedia and Flickr?
http://www.inyearstocome.ws
ok ...
Am i the only one who notices that during most of the 'comparison' .. the iphone interface was running with not apparent human interaction ... while when they switch to Windows ... you see a guy holding a phone and using a stylus ..
I'd want to see greasy hands work on the iphone and see the user carrying a wipe cloth (icloth) and using it every 3 seconds (oops but its a touch screen)... then it'll be a real comparison
When stevie works the iphone interface .. the big screen shows the stuff happen ... but no hands ya'all ... i wanna see video feed of his hands up on the big screen ...then its a comparison ..
This is what I've been saying since it was announced - the interface on apple's phone is definitely superior, but I'm. not. paying. $600. for. GUI.
How much does that Windows Phone cost and which carriers is it available from?
what i think is you need to start compairing it with a pocket pc and not a smarttphone... the pocket pc has a touch screen and that adds alot more software and features.
You mean... a touchscreen like... the Treo? A smartphone?
One one of my projects, I program PocketPC, Windows CE, Windows Mobile or whatever the they want to call it today. The horror! The horror! I can and do crash or hang it all the time. I could write a book about how poorly it is designed, and how users have been debugging it for MS for years now. It is a joke of an OS. I would much rather program for Palm - a way better OS.
As for iPhone, obviously since no one actually has one, it remains to be seen, but if it is really running Mac OS X under there, I hold out some hope for it.

Unashamed Apple fanboy! :) But comeon, you gotta admit the difference is pretty clear.
"I know i've never used the iphone but it has to suck, because I have used windows mobile and it is awesome."
There you have it, proof that Apple fanboys are biased but Windows users are not.
wow!!!
apparently the iPhone can read your mind.
From this video it seems like all you have to do is think a task up and the phone, i mean iPhone, will do it!!!
f*ing amazing dawg. I am t0tl Apple Fanboi now!
This is the dumbest video I've seen regarding this iPhone yet. How can you tell that the phone isnt just playing a video? these tasks just start themselves up???
Let me make this simple for all of you.
The iPhone is not on the market. Nor have all of it's features been released to the public yet.
Therefore, this comparison is pointless and unfair.
And the iPhone still looks more intuitive and clean than the clunky Windows Mobile way of doing things by finding buried menu options with a stylus.
PalmOS may be crashtastic and technically about as modern as Windows 3.1, but it does have a pretty intuitive UI. If Palm can manage to do what they promised with Cobalt (Linux base, better driver model, emulation for legacy apps) they could be back on top even after this summer. If not... well... they're toast.
Nokia N-GAGE pwns joo! XD
"With out being a fanboy"
Read: I can't have an opinion because I'm afraid that every Windows user will make fun of me! Boo Hoo.
Sack it up you freak. I'm getting one and I don't care if 90% of the world has something else!
Buy an Apple, invest in Apple.
"Clunky" windows...I keep hearing that crap over and over. Apparently, none of you ever learned how to set up a shortcut. Or customize your "Today" screen, or use skinning utilities. (Oh wait, that flies boldly in the face of blind iFanboyism!) Maybe all of the features haven't been released yet but there are THOUSANDS (not a typo) pieces of software released for the WM platform. From homebrew developers to large-scale companies, you can get almost any application you would ever want on a WM device. Not only that, but you can get half a dozen different versions of that software for even greater control of your environment. Case in point - Browsers. On the iphone, you have Safari. On WM, you have IE....and Opera...and Minimo (Mozilla)...and Netfront....and...well, I could go on all day, especially if I were to start in on Java based applications. And when do you think Apple will ever, I mean EVER, create any apps for WiFi sniffing and packet injection? Maybe packet analysis? How about competing window managers, such as Resco File explorer or TotalCommander? Oh, I see, you're going to be stuck with whatever they give you. Hmm..
Well, I'm going to be busy hacking the WEP at my local gym, watching my Tivo streaming via LocationFree, viewing Word Docs and Excel Spreadsheets, Using half a dozen chat protocols plus Skype, tethering my Laptop, assisting my Mom through remote Desktop, playing dozens of card games, scores of board games, and hundreds of java games, playing emulators of classic game consoles, using Pocketmusic to DJ via bluetooth for my Friends....
You have fun with your $500 "slick interface", and it's locked down proprietary apps. I'm going to be too busy with my WM6 phone to notice you...
I think the windows mobiles should win hands down... Iphone's interface is a mere fad... Hopefully windows mobile 6.0 should pack more features...
Windows mobile simply rocks!
O and I'll also be enjoying paying half what the iphone costs at the same time for my HTC Wizard...Money is also a good selling point, especially when end up with more features = less money. I guess it must be hard for me to sleep owning the best quality electonics for a fair price, instead of the best branding and cute logos for double that...
Ok we get it, windows phones are buggy because we are allowed to do terrible things to the os by modifying it, or the cell company has a bad rom, or because it has to work on 50 different phones. Apple has in turn took that out of the mix on both the phones and software. If that is what works for them and you guys want to pay for it I say good luck to apple. And the whole worry about the touchscreen can't be that much worse than my cingular 8125 (WM5.0) and does just fine.
(Re: The iPhone is not on the market. Nor have all of it's features been released to the public yet.
Therefore, this comparison is pointless and unfair.)
No it's not. The video shows what features the Iphone is claiming to have. It might have MORE or DIFFERENT features, but this is what we know. The creator of the video never said there was anything WRONG with the iphone, or that the windows system was BETTER, but illustrated that these tasks could also be accomplished on a windows device, or with current technology.
I'm not even going to get into your fanboyish anti-touch screen menu rant thing.
The video was not an attack on apple.
I didn't know either of the devices could do half of those things.
Does anyone recognize what program he's running during the Widget comparison?
dean56, that DOES have a touch screen.
Keebler - GOOD ONE!
Other than that, it seems like a landslide for speed and convenience with the iPhone. Though limited it seems at THIS point, we'll see what it actually ships with.
the iPhone's interface gets out of your way and the windows mobile interface is hindering you... it's that simple...
features can be added as needed, but in terms of user experience the iPhone compared to the windows mobile device is like comparing a ball point pen and paper with a chisel and a block of granite... a huge advance... the two years of research payed off
(re:I didn't know either of the devices could do half of those things)
You post on and read Gizmodo and you had no idea what the feature sets were on both of these phones? HA!! So, basically you haven't been researching the topic at hand, and you have no idea what you are talking about and you expect people to listen to you?
I dunno about you, but when you put the abbreviation "VS" between two words, you are saying that you are comparing/challenging one thing against another. I am 100 percent certain this video was posted as a means to "prove to fan boys that windows mobile can do what the iPhone can do" So I don't believe you in the least bit. Sometimes the author doesn't have to say anything to imply certain concepts or beliefs.
in response to klippoth, I say get a girlfriend because you have waaaaaay too much free time on your hands....and you are spending it being a complete asshat...You think you are a majority but you are not....More than half the people that buy the windows mobile phone are not going to use it the way you described because the typical consumer is dumb. But it's nice to know it can do those things if you are into that kinda of crap.
The iPhone will appeal to the masses for it's simplicity, ease of use, style, intuitiveness, and new features like visual voice mail and the like.
Once the price comes down after gaining support from early adopters (just like the way any cellphone ever introduced works) and more features are added, it will be a piece of killer hardware that is going to be hard to beat.
I'm just maybe a little short tempered about the whole thing right about now, because of the popular sentiments these days. I just had a friend treat me like a retard for having vista, as he espoused the virtues of a Mac at me (from his PC, since he can't afford a Mac). It's popular to hate on Sony's PS3 without checking the stats. It's popular to hate on Vista when a lot of haters haven't even touched it. It's just popular to hate on MS in general, and even though I'm a certified tech, people treat me like I'm just some idiot that doesn't realize what he's talking about if I'm not talking about Linux or OSX. Apparently, people have gotten so brainwashed as to the "Evil" nature of MS that they are willing to slam anything they do without even giving it a chance, and in the meantime, Apple can charge more, give less, and they are hailed as media darlings all the while. I guess as long as it's pretty...
I'm informed, I know exactly what I'm doing when I choose an OS/Phone/Whatever, and I don't need fanboys treating me like I'm an idiot just because I don't agree. There are virtues to be found in OSX. There are virtues to be found in Linux. I'm not arguing that. But people seem to not even realize that Windows phones can do everything that the iPhone can. People seem oblivious to the fact that Apple price gouges. It's as if society actually believes all of those Apple commercials, which are nothing but a string of lies and ill-natured jabs at MS users. I think people need to know the truth. Poeple may not use all of the functionality that I do, but part of that is that they may not even know they can. If MS has failed in any way, it's in being more cool and appealing to the uninformed buying public. But when it comes to an OS that runs on dozens (if not hundreds) of phones, they beat Apple hands down. I mean, re-read my previous post, and you can see, that even though I may just seem biased or angry, the facts speak for themselves. There is more software. There is more room for cutomization. And I've never gotten a BSOD on my phone. It's never been hacked, and I don't worry about checking my mail on it. It might take 2 brain cells instead of 1 to launch an app, but when I can choose from half a dozen browsers, it's worth actually learning something. There should be a difference between "intuitive interface" and "dumbed down for the public", but that is what Apple's doing. They want things to be so simple a chimpanzee could run it. And that's not very hard at all when you take away all choice. Give people one browser and label it "internet". That should dumb it down enough. Maybe just one mail app, and let's call it "Mail". Yep, let's insult the public some more, but equating "choice" with "confusion".
And before people think I'm MS-centric, I am typing from a dual-boot Vista/Suse PC. My laptop runs XP and Ubuntu. My phone is WM6 (Crossbow), although I am quite excited about the new Linux version of the iphone that should be coming along later this year - http://www.openmoko.com/press/index.html#pictures
I just wish people would quit hating on the big powerful companies just because they are big and powerful. MS has made amazing strides with WM6, I haven't gotten a BSOD in years in XP, and Vista may take a little tweaking still, but a couple of patches and updates from now I have high hopes that it will be rock solid. Everyone shouldn't assume that just because something is made by Apple, it is somehow better. After all, Apple is also one of those big powerful companies as well, not just an underdog.
And you can stop the "get a girlfriend" comments, because they are childish, off-topic, and untrue. Try to rebut with something relevant instead.
Clearly the iPhone has the better UI and better overall integration. The phone screams usability and style. For that I think the phone is brilliant, and for the people who can actually afford it but aren't tech nuts, it's going to be killer. But also clearly the Windows Mobile units completely destroy it on overall features, customizability, expandability, and potential.
They're really very different markets. While I'd love to have a unit like this that's as slick and well-integrated as the iPhone (I'm a self-proclaimed iPod-hater and Steve Jobs had me until he said Cingular), in the end I'd still much rather the flexibility provided by a Windows Mobile device. I own a Pocket PC (2003) now, and I'm very comfortable with it. I'm also a die-hard PC user over Macs for the same reason. If my computer's still running the same way it was a week ago, I'm disappointed. There's a huge market for the Mac in people who are comfortable with what's already on their computer and don't like to fiddle with things, and that's the same market the iPhone's perfect for. Drop a couple hundred bucks off the price and add more networks and the thing will kill.
But in the end this is almost exactly the Windows versus Mac debate taken to phones. Moreso even than the Pocket PC versus Palm used to be, both in manufacturer and true spirit. Style/integration versus flexibility/complexity. As long as Apple doesn't start overrun the phone industry the way they did the MP3 player industry, though, I'll be happy there's an option for everyone.
The UI in windows is more quick and clean. No animations and whatnot. Price difference? Space? Expandability?
I admit to being totally biased in favor of Apple, but this comparison seems like a crappy, slow little PC compared to a sleek and elegant new concept. I would not trust myself with a stylus and a little PC like this, fearing that I'd get so frustrated with it that I'd poke the stylus through the screen.
That iPhone looks niiiiiiice!
I've been frequently viewing threads realated to the iPhone on this site and I feel compelled to leave my 2 cents.
Klippoth I wish all windows users were like you. I work for a company that does a lot with Apple and I encounter silly bigotry everyday. Its nice to see that someone uses windows and doesn't degrade people for using Macs.
With that being said, lets talk iPhone. I will definitely be purchasing one for a few reasons.
1 - I carry way too many devices (Livedrive, 2 cellphones, iPod, camera, laptop). Apple has condensed all of these devices for me.
2 - Compatibility. To all you Windows Mobile users out there, you are all correct. There are Tens (Hundreds?) of thousands of applications on the market for windows mobile. But as a windows user you forget that you guys have the luxury of ActiveSync. Everything for windows mobile compatibility on the Mac is a hack from some other company. Microsoft doesn't make anything to help Mac users on this front. Mac OS X has some pretty nice Open Standard apps like Apple Mail, Address Book and iCal. I would love to sync these items with a Windows Mobile phone using a genuine Microsoft product. The iPhone will help out us Mac users that don't get first dibbs on software.
3 - 3rd party Applications. This is a sore spot that everyone points out as a negative point on the iPhone. Steve clearly stated that there will be a certification process for developing apps for the phone. Ok no big deal for me. I'm not a developer, and I may not be able to choose from massive library of apps, but there is not really that many I need. All I need is:
- First and foremost, the ability to make calls
- Address Book
- Calendar (My life is scheduled... I know, sad)
- Visual Voicemail (I get way too many voicemails need to be able to get to the important ones on the fly)
- Picture application
- Push email (For work and play)
- Calculator (Although my math is pretty good)
- Spreadsheet Application
- Note Taking application
- Music / Video compatible with iTunes ( I spent a lot of money on iTunes purchases. I don't want to re-buy my songs with someone else's media store)
- Camera (I live in South Florida... You need a camera here)
- SMS
- Games ( I love the iPod games)
4 - Widgets. These are not necessarily a need to have item but I like them. and these widgets are html and Java based, so anyone can make these.
The moral of this post is that I chose to use a Macintosh as my primary machine for work and iLife. My computer is a 15" MacBook Pro with a 2.33 Intel core 2 duo, a 256 MB ATI graphics card, 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM. I purchased it at the Apple Store (with a discount) for $2600. It runs Mac OS X great and Vista Ultimate fine. As a matter of fact, my minimum user experience rating in Vista is a 4.9 and when I finish with this post I am going to reboot my machine into the windows environment to finish playing Battlefield 2.
So for me, as well as most of you windows users, it's all about compatibility and personal choice. I chose to wait for the Apple iPhone, you may not. That is your choice and you are entitled to it. Now please can we all just get along ;)
For a mobile a streemlined interface is the way to go. However since I have no money I'm buying neither so I am just useless.
HAHA the Windows Mobile cannot hold one Kajillion Contacts...
I'll just wait till Apple releases (in about two minutes) iPhone "pequeño"...
HAHAHAHA
your comments are fairly amusing, klippoth. mainly because whenever an apple supporter posts similar statements they get ridiculed and disregarded as a 'fanboi'.
i, however, do not believe in 'fanboi's. i see nothing wrong with getting worked-up and excited about a company whose products you enjoy. nor do i believe it wrong to feel the need to defend the company or the company's products.
unfortunately, i do believe your arguments to be a bit irrelevant.
first, we simply do not know what the development capabilities are going to be like for the iphone. we don't know what is actually going to ship with it.
in the end, we do not even know if it will be released as it has yet to be approved by those wonderful government agencies we like to insult.
so, to say that a mobile os can do everything an unreleased product/os can do is a bit ludicrous to me.
you are comparing a product that has had at least 5 major revisions to something that does not exist yet.
...and you are getting emotional about it.
take a step back, relax, and let us all wait for the actual release of the product before we tear it apart for being unoriginal and lacking in features.
Wow I hate what you guys are saying. Ok do your research idiots, i read about iPhone for like 30 minutes before i ran into footage of macworld 07 where steve jobs uses the iphone with a camera on his hand and the phone plugged into a projector screen which is what we are seeing in this video. @ nakmario you are a moron. stop making smart ass comments that are actually wrong. the UI is a fad? the UI is OS X...im not really gonna say anything else about that. oh yea and if your hands are greasy wipe them and then use your iphone why would that be hard. you little windows douchebags just hate the iphone because its apple not because you gave the iphone a chance or even know what you are talking about
Why doesn't the iPhone have infrared capability? Ya mean Al Gore won't be able to control his "Inconvenient Truth" slides with his iPhone?!? What gives with this lack of feature?
For half a grand, I'd expect this thing to also replace my remotes...
