Google's recent updates to GMail Mobile are making it easier and faster to check your GMail from your cell phone. The app (which can be downloaded from Google for free) pre-fetches your e-mail automatically and lets you view attachments like PDFs, images, and Word files from your cell phone. The folks at MobileCrunch gave it a whirl and were mostly impressed by the app's speed. Sprint already has plans for pre-installing the app on some of its new phones, otherwise you'll need a Java-enabled phone to run the app.

Gah! Doesn't work with Nokia N93. Java error.
This would be a good app if only I had a G-Mail account. I use Virgin Mobile. At present, you can't sign up for a G-Mail account with a Virgin Mobile cell phone. Apparently they're biased against pay-as-you-goers. Why the Hell do you need a cell phone to sign up for G-Mail anyway? Too bad nobody I know has a spare G-Mail invitation. Woe is me.
Holy crap... A usable J2ME mail client? I may have to lose my Sidekick now.
Add Verizon Wireless to the incompatible list. Damn you BREW!
This might be nicer if they didn't release the Treo 650 version as a J2ME app. Ah well. Maybe someday.
Works well on a T-mobile Dash, although if you're rolling with a smartphone, why bother?
YEAY GOOGLE!!
MY CARRIER: Sprint
MY PHONE: LG "FUSIC
DOWLOADING THE APP:
Went to the address http://gmail.com/app on my Fusic handset. The actual application took approximately 5 seconds to download.
The applet recognized what type of phone I have and was automatically saved in the "email/im" folder on my phone.
FUNCTIONALITY
Impressive, easy to use. The emails are actually legible on the small screen! The program updates quickly and the menu is rather efficient.
EASY TO ACCESS
Once saved to your phone just open the java file to access.
**obviously charges will apply for the data used. IF you do not have a data plan yet (which would be surprising for most people reading this blog) you should get one before you go nuts!
THIS FRIGGIN ROCKS. I have Cing, and a SLVR. Works perfect. As CTO for our company, I set up GMAIL as our 'provider' and Thunderbird as the front end. Soon as the corp gmail is up, we're there.
Now, you can keep those crackberries- my SLVR can do 90% of it now! WITH iTunes!
My data bill is gonna SUCK...
jimmyrizzo - give me a way to contact you and I can hook you up with a gmail invite....
VERIZON completely sucks at keeping up with the latest and greatest...Thanks guys!
I'm on O2 (UK) and it worked perfectly on my N70. Took all of 2 minutes to read this post, download and set up.
I already had the IBM JVM on my Verizon Treo because it's required to run Opera Mini, so this installed fine for me. I use my gmail account as an automatic archive, so it's nice to have another way to access it on the move.
FYI, this works like a charm on Nextel, if you've got the means to get the jad/jar on there. ;-)
Works fine on my Nokia 6680, including PDF, Word and jpg downloads. In the words of the Fanulous Furry Freak Brothers, Hallelujahgobble
edmicman YOU ROCK! Contact me at:

edmicman - I got a G-Mail invite from Mike C. You still rock though. So does Mike C. Who'd a thunk Gizmodo-ites were so generous?!
this took a number of attempts to install on my VZW treo 650 - of course, i didn't have the java environment so that required an install, and is one of those pesky add-ons that can't be d/l directly to the pda - so away i went with a bluetooth hotsync, having long ago lost the sync cable... of course, this particular sync precipitated the dreaded treo 650 "stuck in reboot" cycle, so I had to wipe everything for the third or fourth time this month. Then, after getting the Java Environment installed (crappiest readme.txt, EVER), the actual gmail file generated a series of errors for each attempt at install. I finally got it on the tenth try, although I still don't know why the others didn't work. Pretty slick app, but peppered with that laggy Java flavour.
By the way, in case it's not common knowledge yet, there's a similar Google Maps app for phones as well:

It's even pretty damned useful on my stone-age Nextel with approx. 130x130 screen.
I can't remember where I saw this mentioned first - it might have been here. :)
Om Malik says" if Google ever got around to releasing a single app that combined Gmail, Gtalk and GCal, they might have an instant winner on their hands. Just, which despite limited device support, remains one of our favorite mobile apps."
Actually not google but another application named Morange has put all these together, push mail, IM, calendar, virtual disk , Push RSs etc, etc, It ranked high in GetJar seems ranks very high, maybe you want to have a look
